So far, I'm quite enjoying the ciphers. The second one was easy, the third one took me an hour or so, and the first one took me the longest, but had the happiest "ah ha!" payoff
Messages The following solutions to the 10 ciphers were found by myself and the following users: Gordon1470 (message 4), otggamer (message 5 hints - he solved it and kindly nudged me in the right direction) and mayorcj (message 10). SPOILERS WILL FOLLOW! IF YOU WANT TO SOLVE THESE CIPHERS ON YOUR OWN THEN DON'T VIEW THESE SPOILERS! YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED! To solve the ciphers you have to find them again after you unlocked them. Hint 1: Spoiler The way to this hidden menu can be found on the main menu. Hint 2: Spoiler It stares you right in the face the whole time. Solution: Spoiler After receiving messages, the cipher menu becomes accessible in the main menu by tapping the big center circle. You can then tap any unsolved message (which is in red). Solved messages are white. Message 1 (Round 3): Spoiler A MOUSE HAS ONE SNOUT BUT A HAND HAS FIVE Hint 1: Spoiler What does a hand have five of? Hint 2: Spoiler What do you do with them most of the time when you use your iDevice? Solution: Spoiler Touch the screen with five fingers. Message 2 (Round 11): Spoiler EERNSITCEPS OTHIWTU EIAPTECN SI A OGLDNE RHPA ISIMGNS SIT HCDRO Hint 1: Spoiler Anagrams. Hint 2: Spoiler Be persistent. Solution: Spoiler PERSISTENCE WITHOUT PATIENCE IS A GOLDEN HARP MISSING ITS CHORD Method: Spoiler This is an anagram sentence. The letters of each word are rearranged. Rearrange the letters of each word. As the solved message tells you, you have to be persistent to solve it. The first time, letters will jump around while you try to rearrange them - the second time, they will be far more cooperative. Message 3 (Round 24): Spoiler XK BOOLO XQ QEB CRKZQFLK ZFMEBOPZOBBK IFKB QBK BUMBZQBA PBJFZLILK Hint 1: Spoiler This cipher is named after a roman emperor. Hint 2: Spoiler His name was Caesar. Hint 3: Spoiler 'X' -> 'A'. Solution: Spoiler AN ERROR AT THE FUNCTION CIPHERSCREEN LINE TEN EXPECTED SEMICOLON Method: Spoiler This is a caesar cipher. When tapping any letter, a wheel will appear where you can rotate through the alphabet. Substitute each letter with the letter 3 letters down the alphabet. So 'A' -> 'D', 'B' -> 'E', 'X' -> 'A' (wrap around), et cetera. Message 4 (Round 31): Spoiler HHERAIRHHNOEAGRLHOSLARUOOLCWRACOLUERAGSLUHSDGTO Hint 1: Spoiler This is a transposition cipher. The ciphertext already contains all the letters of the plaintext, but in a messed up order. Hint 2: Spoiler Four columns. Hint 3: Spoiler Write one way, read in another way. Solution: Spoiler HAHAHA OR LAUGHING OR LAUGHTER OR SUCCESS OR HELLO WORLD Method: Spoiler This is a rotation cyper. It is decoded by writing the message into a table with 4 columns and then reading it from top to bottom and from left to right. Message 5 (Round 45): Spoiler WECT RM NDQSFSTDLOD CLR C BMJRDL ECQN ECVD FL OMKKML Hint 1: Spoiler This is a substitution cipher. Hint 2: Spoiler Start with short words and guess. Hint 3: Spoiler There is a keyword hidden in the cipher - you can find it in other messages as well as the achievement icons for deciphering other messages. Solution: Spoiler WHAT DO PERSISTENCE AND A GOLDEN HARP HAVE IN COMMON Method: Spoiler This is a substitution cipher. Every plaintext letter is assigned to a unique ciphertext letter. The cipher was created by the word 'CHORD' and then filling up the rest with the letters in alphabetic order: ABCDEFGHIJKLMNOPQRSTUVWXYZ <- Plaintext CHORDABEFGIJKLMNPQSTUVWXYZ <- Ciphertext Message 6 (Round 59): Spoiler SELVAHRRWWZSSAGZCVULHBBSKNRJIVPCDZYKRBRCN Hint 1: Spoiler This is a Vigenère cipher. Hint 2: Spoiler The key is hidden in the achievement icons for deciphering other messages. Hint 3: Spoiler The key is the defining property of a circle. Solution: Spoiler BEING PART OF A BAD RIDDLE THAT NOBODY CARES ABOUT Method: Spoiler This is a Vigenère Cipher. It's basically a Caesar cipher where the shift of each letter is determined by a key which is repeated for the entire length of the plaintext. Looking at the icons for solving the other messages you can find RADIUS to be the key (look at the icon for deciphering message 5). Now, to decipher this message we write the ciphertext and the repeated key underneath: SELVAHRRWWZSSAGZCVULHBBSKNRJIVPCDZYKRBRCN RADIUSRADIUSRADIUSRADIUSRADIUSRADIUSRADIU The first letter of the ciphertext is 'S' and the corresponding key letter is 'R' which means that the caesar cipher mapped plaintext 'A' to ciphertext 'R' - so 'S' in the cipher becomes 'B' in plaintext. The second ciphertext letter 'E' remains unchanged because the key letter 'A' signifies that the caesar cipher used the shift 0. The third letter of the ciphertext is 'L' and the key letter is 'D' so 'L' becomes 'I'. Continue this method for the rest of the message. Message 7 (Round 62): Spoiler See https://dl.dropbox.com/u/7925/Hundreds/Message7.png Hint 1: Spoiler This is another substitution cipher. Hint 2: Spoiler Look at the presskit on the game's website and watch the launch trailer. Hint 3: Spoiler Look at the achievement icons for receiving messages. Keep them in their order. Solution: Spoiler YOU SHOULD BE THANKING ME FOR OVERWRITING THREE THROUGH NINE Method: Spoiler Yet another substitution cipher - but this time with a funky alphabet for the ciphertext. See https://dl.dropbox.com/u/7925/Hundreds/Cipher7.png for the incomplete but sufficient cipher. The achievement icons for unlocking the messages are the first ten glyphs in order, so 'A' through 'J'. Message 8 (Round 76): Spoiler See https://dl.dropbox.com/u/7925/Hundreds/Message8.png Hint 1: Spoiler This is once again a substitution cipher. Hint 2: Spoiler There are four groups of glyphs: 1. with vertical and horizontal lines without dots, 2. The same as 1. with dots, 3. diagonal lines and 4. the same as 3. with dots. Hint 3: Spoiler Each group of glyphs can be arranged into a pattern of lines. Hint 4: Spoiler Filling these patterns with the alphabet gets you the cipher. Hint 5: Spoiler Where do pigs sleep? Solution: Spoiler I SAVED YOU FROM ALL OF THEIR METAPHORS AND HINTS Method: Spoiler This is a pigpen cipher. See https://dl.dropbox.com/u/7925/Hundreds/Cipher8.png for the incomplete but sufficient cipher. Message 9 (Round 85): Spoiler See https://dl.dropbox.com/u/7925/Hundreds/Message9.png Hint 1: Spoiler This message is decrypted in two steps. Hint 2: Spoiler You have seen these glyphs before. Hint 3: Spoiler And you have cracked a substitution cipher before. Solution: Spoiler YOU WERE NOT GOING TO UNLOCK THE SECRET POWER ANYWAY Method: Spoiler One first realizes that these are the same glyphs as in message 7. Using this cipher results in: YKU WONO JKQ AKDJA QK UJHKCG QBO POCNOQ LKWON SJYWSY It is then necessary to once again crack a substitution cipher. The incomplete but sufficient cipher is: ABCDEFGHIJKLMNOPQRSTUVWXYZ <- Plaintext GHCI__KL_NOP_REST_A_U_W_Y_ <- Ciphertext I can't find an explanation for this cipher (like in message 5). Message 10 (Round 93): Spoiler See https://dl.dropbox.com/u/7925/Hundreds/Message10.png Hint 1: Spoiler Unlike other messages, this is not a sentence. Hint 2: Spoiler But like other messages, this is a substitution cipher. Hint 3: Spoiler Clues for this message are hidden in the achievement icons for deciphering other messages. Hint 4: Spoiler The glyphs themselves are a clue of some sort. Hint 5: Spoiler March, 14th. Solution: Spoiler THREE ONE FOUR ONE FIVE NINE TWO SIX FIVE THREE Method: Spoiler Looking at the pattern (first and last word identical, three letter word repeated) and combining with the fact that the glyphs are all made up of circles one might get to the digits of Pi. THE FOLLOWING SPOILERS CONTAIN THE WAY TO UNLOCK THE SECRET POWER! FINDING IT ON YOUR OWN IS VERY SATISFYING! YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED! Clue 1: Spoiler After unlocking all messages, read them in order and they start to make more sense. Clue 2: Spoiler According to message 07, the messages 03 through 09 were overwritten. Clue 3: Spoiler They contained metaphors and hints according to message 08. Clue 4: Spoiler Message 09 says that these hints alluded to a secret power. Clue 5: Spoiler And message 10 - which we know was not overwritten - consists of the words for the first ten digits of pi. Clue 6: Spoiler Look at the achievement icon for deciphering message 10. The unlock: Spoiler In the round selection screen, tap the levels in the order specified by message 10: three, one, four, one, five, nine, two, six, five, three. A sound will play and in the upper left corner a magnet icon will appear that you can toggle on and off. Activating this secret power allows you to tap anywhere on the field to generate a pulling force that will move the surrounding circles. PMs for feedback are welcomed.
Yeah I am having problems I also played on iPhone then when i played on iPad it has the first 9 levels unlocked but that's it and no records show up for those levels. It has tells me I'm signed into Game Center as "me". I guess that's ok but not clear how does it know its the default Game Center Id or whatever.
I'm interested in this, but I only have an iphone 4 and I have a really low tolerance for games that stutter or are choppy on my device. I get the feeling that this game should only be played on an ipad. Can any one who has played this on the iphone 4 let me know how well this game plays?
Don't worry, we're not alone in being horribly deceived into thinking this is a game[/sarcasm] http://kotaku.com/5972839/so-far-hundreds-is-the-2013-game-of-the-year
I have an iPhone4 and it plays great for me! 60fps. Full disclosure: I'm one of the devs. Also, I've heard it plays well on 3GSs too. Can't confirm firsthand though. Ps. Nice job on the ceasar cipher, Kamikaze! Hold on to your butt, that's the easiest one!
Is this what you're referring to? http://www.moma.org/explore/inside_out/2012/11/29/video-games-14-in-the-collection-for-starters?utm_source=social It's a very strange list. Basically *Roger Ebert* flapped his wings and a whirling *MOMA exhibit* came into existence years later. Putting Passage on the same list as Tetris uh I hope the curator was in on the joke like a Duchamp kind of thing. Also is the subtext that Canabalt (MOMA approved!) deserves more attention than say Resident Evil 2 or Half-Life? 'Cause that's a much weirder priority than anything Crunc has said. I'm not saying who started - chicken and egg - but supporters and detractors both write very strange things. I never followed Canabalt discussion that much, but over in Pinball Arcade discussions both fans of the developers and haters seem quite deranged these days.
At first this game intrigued me and then after seeing the screen shots and reading the app description it seemed a little basic. But then after reading this forum and seeing everyone's reactions to the game I think I might get it. I mean what's to lose for $3? Plus I'm a huge fan of simple puzzle games so I might dig it anyway!
All I'm going to say is that this is a game for puzzle fans. Not Tetris puzzle fans. Real puzzle fans, like those who racked their brain on Myst and the like. You have to think. Hard at times. If you don't like to think, but I stead prefer acting. Or blasting, or jumping, really, move on here. The levels are puzzles, the rewards are puzzles, and the game itself is a puzzle. Completely brilliant, especially the ciphers. Well done.
By about level 47 and above I'm ready to throw my ipad to the wall. I dun understand how ppl can do it with a phone.
Ok, I wants to apologize for causing trouble earlier. I am new, so please forgive. I won't say anymore bad things already.
Possible Bugs Having the multi-task enabled on the iPad has caused the game to crash a couple of times solving the first 2 ciphers. Locked the screen up with no response - turning iPad off thee on again fixed it, but I turned off multitask as well.
Starting with the 3rd cipher, the interface implies that this is a matter of letter substitution. In that case, the interface for solving these could be a lot better. When you switch one letter it would be nice if all the cases of the same letter in the cipher get substituted as well instead of having to manually change each instance of that letter,. Also, it would be helpful if there was a color change for substituted letters so I could tell the ones I already manipulated.
