The 3G is unlockable only on 2.2 firmware or lower. If the phone has upgrade to 2.2.1 ever, then your out of luck, since 2.2.1 changed the baseband and the unlocking software (yellowsn0w) needs the older baseband to work. After you unlock it on 2.2 firmware you are able to upgrade to 2.2.1 following certain directions in a way to keep the older baseband so you still can use yellowsn0w and get 2.2.1 without upgrading the baseband. The dev-team is working on an unlock for 3.0 I believe and we should know in the next couple weeks how 3.0 and 3G S is going to be unlocked or not.
If anyone here plans to buy a contract and end it after 1 month you should really look at a touch 2g, it's (now, anyway) middle power between the 3g and 3gS and much slimmer then the phone model because of no mic and phone stuff inside, also about 1/3rd the price you will pay to get a 3gS contract and pay to cancel it.
Yep, you lose your number, have to wait, and then in the end you end up saving what... $25? Totally not worth it, especially if you've been using the same number for 10 years.
Why wouldn't they? It's a huge money maker. And now, a year later, better technology can make it faster. Plus, they've kind of made a point on this yearly update thing.
