Ok so today I was wondering, could I do what they did with the 2g to the 3g upgrade and just extend my contract 2 years and just get the subsidized price. I went over to the apple store and asked them, they told me to call AT&T. I called AT&T and they told me to do that you must have been in the contract for 18 months, poop. So then I asked if I could cancel my contract and start a new one the same day. They said yes. So to get the 3GS for $350 if you have a 3G you do this. 1. Cancel your contract, it will cost you $150 2. Wait till June 19th. 3. Get in line =D 4. Buy the 16GB for $200 5. Success. You can get the 32GB for $300, but then its $450, whatever you want. 8GB was enough for me. All of this is NOT including tax....of course.
Yeah been thinking about doing this. Canceling the contract with AT&T is $175 I'm pretty sure though. And hopefully they let you keep the same phone number after canceling the plan.
Case and point,.. AT&T is the worst wireless provider in the galaxy, possibly the universe. They should allow current contract holders to enter a new contract at a price discounted by how long they have been in their current contract. That way, they reward early adopters to their phone service while allowing 3G holders to upgrade their hardware. Having to upgrade via this method is about as backwards as trying to brush your teeth with the grip of the toothbrush. Why are they doing this? note: I didnt really care about the 3GS until they released the tech specs. =\
350 is still a fair amount of money just to upgrade, you should take note that most app's are not going to show the power of 3GS instantly and before long some deals may appear.
Just wondering here, could I get the iPhone 3GS, pay one month, and cancel and use it without cell service?
I think your probably better off picking up the next gen iPod touch and going through with the rest of your contract, then sell both when you can upgrade.
I think my contract is at 18 months.. Do you know if this still applies if you have a plain old flip phone with them?
Yes... Sure can but you pay the cancellation fee... What I don't get is why they aren't doing exception upgrades... AT&T will let any customer a one time "Exception" as long as they have completed 6 months on the current contract... The only difference is an extra charge of $75 on the phone price... Why this doesn't apply to the new iPhone doesn't make much sense. But any other phone they offer, and i mean any phone (Except iphone) can be bought at the subsidized price +$75 after just six months in contract when doing an exception upgrade....
Actually now that i think of it, i know it needs a sim card in it, don't know what happens if it's an inactive sim though, I'm about 98% sure it will work though no problems....
Firstly, no Sprint holds that title. But secondly the other day I was at the AT&T store and was talking about getting an iphone. So, we were talking about the pros and cons of both models when he made an interesting comment. He was saying that I could first get a 3g for a while, but then upgrade to the 3gs once I got my hands on one. He said that all I would have to pay to upgrade would be a restocking fee of $10, covering the cost difference of the two models, and something else, which if I was upgrading from 16gb 3g to 16gb 3gs would total to around $50. I am not sure if this is some deal since there is a new model coming out, if this is a new customer discount, or something else. But I do think that there is something that you guys aren't considering that might make it cheaper. Has anyone else heard this, am I missing something, or is the sales guy I talked to an idiot??? Hope this means big deals for everyone!
Could I insert a sim card from my AT&T Phone I have now into it? And it would be able to call you think?
According to recent articles, you have to wait 90 days before they'll let you sign up again. Plus you won't get the same phone number. And I believe it's $175 to cancel. These catches are designed to keep people from doing what you're proposing.
What he is talking about is the return policy, you have 30 days on any phone from AT&T in fact you could go get the 3G and within the month come back and get the 3GS, why you would want to make the extra trips? probably not worth it... But that's what I'm gathering from your post. THE ONLY time AT&T will charge any type of restocking fee would be on a return if you didn't have the box or manual of some sort... And since you can't return anything after 30 days, I am to assume this MUST be what he was talking about... Trust me he was looking to make a sale, He doesn't want you to leave empty handed and wants to guarantee his sale, in terms of "hey look take this 3G today, use it for 3 weeks, and when I get my 3gS's in I'll call you so you can come and exchange it". Boom you got a temporary iPhone to last until the 3Gs comes out, and he got his sale....
Nope I've tried it, if it's unlocked then yes, but on a locked iphone like mine, you actually have to insert a blank sim and then plug the phone into iTunes to actually activate that sim to work with that iphone...
Oh, ok. Guess that will only help me then, I was hoping for your guys' sake that I was on to something. Good luck on deciding to dish out the dough or not.
You can get a blank sim at any AT&T Corporate store, and yes unlocking your phone is almost like Jailbreaking... Not sure if the 3G and up is unlockable or not (Anyone?)?
