    Hi all,

I just figured this out, and it probably works across the globe.

Apple only lets promo codes work in the US app store right now (no idea why), which sucks for the rest of the world. However, you can actually get the apps onto your device as long as you have an account with the US app store, and you can do that without giving any credit card info. Just log into the US store, and create an account with an American address (fictional). You do NOT need to give any credit card info, now or ever.

(To test the account, try downloading a free app or song.)

Now you can redeem a promo code, and download it!

I see one problem. To create an account without credit card you need a gift card. And where the heck are you going to get a US gift card in China? or Australia or any other big or small country with its own currency?

You don't need a gift card to start an account - just a valid email and an American address. I've never used gift cards at all, but I have an American account that I use for free songs, tv shows, etc.

Tosui is right. I've had a US account for ages simply using a valid e-mail address different to my UK account,
    and a fictitious US address.

It's great for the free single of the week, and the odd free video.
I wasn't clear it worked for all countries, but perhaps I was naive to think it wouldn't.

Now, onto finding a fictitious AU address! :D

I'm guessing Apple will allow other countries to redeem promo codes by mid 2009. We can also *hope* for more App Store fixes.

Yeah, with the rumours of iWork going "cloud" next year, I'm guessing that purchases will come with a promo code for the iPhone version, regardless of country. The US is a great test market for these kinds of things before rolling out to the world.
