My wife thinks I am too old to play games. I play WoW, Sim City, and about 10 iOS games. I am 50. My response to that is that I think it is more adult to play games than watch the crappy TV shows that she watches..... Stuff like The bachelor / Bachelorette... Say Yes to the Dress, and all the other crappy wedding shows she watches.....
Me, almost 20. Gaming is for babies apparently, iOS gaming even worse. Thats what I'm told. Game on dude. Quick question: Do you give your custom charecters gray hair?
I'm 46. Like anything, it's a matter of balance. I game, read, workout, watch movies, and, of course, spend time with my family. One thing I appreciate about iOS gaming is how much easier it is to integrate into my busy life than console or PC gaming. So no, 50 isn't too old to game.
I'm an oldy, 55 years of an oldy. Most older people simply sat on the back porch to vegetate but now they're pulling out gaming device's and keeping their minds sharp and active. For some it used to be table card games so what's the difference if its on a device now? And for those that laugh at older people for playing games are trying to squeeze them into a mold from their own dinosauric viewpoint of what life should be. Simply put....they just don't get it. Thing is also, I'm more accepted from the younger crowd because I play games than from associates of my own age. This thread reminds me of the Hoppa commercial with the Dad sitting on the porch through all the seasons with his iPad.....lol
I think it's great you guys are gaming at your age. I honestly can't think of anyone personally past 50 who actively is a gamer, let alone is part of a community on a forum.
Ha ha love this post, yeah at 50 people should really rest in case they have heart attacks shouldnt they ?! 'Love' silly stereotypes. Gaming has been around a while you know ! The thing is 'our' generation were the first ones to get into video games, i mean the Atari 2600 came out in the late 70's, then you had the 8 bits in the 80's making gaming even more popular. Before that you had 'consoles' which were a variety of bat n ball games eg tennis/squash/football, all very samey but at the time they were great. As a kid i was bored with board games, second i saw my cousins Atari i fell in love with gaming. Now i better sit down as at 'my age' i'm obviously losing my breath and feel faint and need my 25 medicines to cope.
I'm jealous of you oldies for experiencing the entirety of gaming...and not growing up in this horrific generation like me
I remember we had a lady here on tA which turned out to be far over 60... 65, if I remember correctly. Guess this proves that you're never to old to play games, so keep the child. I am 42 and (imho) no, gaming isn't just for youngsters. It's a hobby and all we girls/guys over 40 are the first generation. Something we can be proud of. Watching TV makes you dumb and you have a passive role. But when gaming, you're active. We play because we want to keep or improve out reflexes, get mentally challenged by puzzle games of all kind (to keep our brains fresh), we play roleplaying games to have a little holiday from reality and travel through unknown lands, we also constantly learn from games... historical games, strategy games, all kind of stuff. It's simple: we play because we want to be entertained OUR way - and we have every right to do so. Because gaming isn't bound to a particular age. As long as you don't need Viagra, everything is fine.
I'm 46. Imho, nobody is too old for videogames. I also feel that nobody is too old for comic books, and I'd go so far as to say nobody is too old for toys. It makes me sad when I hear people suggest that there's an age beyond which it is wrong for a person to enjoy "childish" things. I think these things all contribute to a healthy mind. I really think its important to keep the imagination cooking along. Now, the way I enjoy those childish things is different than when I was a child. Now when I read a comic, I'm really appreciating the style and tone of the presentation - the artwork, the way the story is told, the references to things that I wouldn't have "gotten" as a kid. Same thing for toys. I don't sit on the floor playing GI Joe anymore, but I definitely still love my toys - iphones, ipads, tools, cameras...I even still enjoy D&D! I've encountered lots of older folks over the years and I've found its often the case that the ones who have maintained an interest in stuff that could be considered childish also happen to be the ones who are the most "alive" and mentally sharp.
Just go and experience it. I was born roughly in time for the NES, but that didn't stop me from playing a ton of CPC, Commodore, and even ColecoVision games. If you're interested in the history of gaming as a subject then there are games you'll enjoy across the entire Spectrum. Pun obviously intended.
30. Shocked at all the fellow olds and semi olds on TA. Need to create a thread to discuss the returning rashes, ailments and aching bones
Yeah i think its great when younger gamers get into the retro games. Back in those days graphics/music in the games were often quite poor but 1) you had to use your imagination as a kid when you bought a game, on the front cover was a great picture of a warrior and a dragon and in the game you're a * and the dragon a & ! Okay those are early early days but a lot of retro games have at the end of the day great gameplay. Yeah you can dress games up with great graphics or music but if the games boring it doesnt matter. To me modern games are often like a 'dumb blonde', looks great but nothing long term. Retro games may be the 'uglier' sister but are far more interesting ! I dont just play retro games on iOS because of rose tinted spectacles, i play them as they still play well all these years later, playability doesnt grow old
Well its what you make it. But i must admit looking back as i grew up in the 80's it was great to see the mainstream birth of gaming, from the Atari 2600 to the 8 bits in the 80's, early 90's 16 bit and PC's coming of age for gaming, consoles like Genesis/NES etc and then the internet arriving in the 90's. Gamings now mainstream, in the old days people used to joke if you mentioned you werent going to the pub and instead having a night with friends on Mario Kart ! After having experienced all that thats why i find it so depressing when 'some' kids go on about a rubbish game for 99c and expect much more, in the thread in the General section some players seem to want everything in their 1 dollar game etc. You honestly honestly dont realise how lucky you are ! (god i am sounding old now !). Pay $12 for a game, load it up by tape for 6 minutes, then realise the games rubbish and you've wasted $12 you saved up for weeks with your pocket money. Now kids have a $300-$400 device and whinge about a game being $1.99 and want to wait till its free, unbelievable ! Anyway i'm off to watch some black and white TV and talk about the good old days
43 here and quite frankly I'm surprised at how many in this thread of the same vintage Gaming has been part of my life ever since I played my first pong game on a black & white tv all the way through to my IPad... Love COD on the Xbox, I think it's hilarious when I get called a noob!
28 here, been gaming since 1990 when "santa" came with a nes and a copy of Mickey Mouscapade which felt brutally hard even though I loved the graphics and the fact I was playing with the beloved character. Ive dabbled extensively in my older years in the pre nes era, so now my collection includes stuff from the earlier years too. The only issue age brings I think its the reduced time for playing, as spending time with the wife, family and job usually lets little R&R time. On the other hand now my collection has grown massively as im not dependant on an allowance but on my own means so im free to go nuts buying and collecting and my wife doesnt get mad. Imho I think theres no set age for start or stop gaming, I for sure will be gaming and collecting even when I get much older and im rather proud of it.
Yeah I think gaming when we're much older will help heaps. So many oldies just creaking around their house when they could be up to their eyeballs in fantasy carnage via Warhammer Quest. My wife is chilled about it too. I watch very little TV so gaming is good way to spend my limited downtime.
My four brothers and I played on the original pong unit( still have it), commodore games, Sega games and lots of board games. Nowadays I'm the only brother that plays regular games so obviously I'm the brightest of them all
