I don't buy console games on the iphone- the beauty of the iphone is it's original, and casual games. So in answer I don't. I just don't think the iphone is as good a gaming device as the platforms they have come from. Eg. Dungeon Defenders I'm waiting for it to come on the PC, Lara Croft I enjoyed very much on the PC. I'd much rather play a game of Battleheart than Battlefield on the idevice. (actually I should say in general, FFT would be an exception and I'd pay up to £5-£10 ($10-15)
As much as I love my iTouch, I find the button-less controls and the cramped screen too cumbersome when used for long periods of time to make a full console-style experience enjoyable. I'd much rather play a good casual game like Angry Birds / Game Dev Story / Disc Drivin' etc. that has controls that work well with the device than play a hobbled console port. But I do think the "99 cent or nothing" mentality of the App Store and App Store consumers could hamper the development of quality games. I paid full price (what was it--$12.99?) for Chaos Rings, so my upper limit for a game is around $15-$20. But at that price it better be good.
^ This. +1 Most if not all developers are too busy developing the 3,489th clone of some match-3 or Angry Birds or whatever, because these games have no originality, are simple to make, and will make money off of the massive population of kids who only care about showing their friends how much they scored in Minigore. Spending time and effort to develop real console-quality titles that will sell for $19.99, and only make money off of the people who care about quality games? Hell no. A million sales of $0.99 is much better than a thousand sales of $19.99 for these developers. Many previous generation (N64, PS1-2, Gamecube) games are infinitely better than the rubbish we have on the iPhone because people weren't obsessed with graphics, they were obsessed with the actual gameplay. Games like Zelda had absolutely terrible graphics compared to now but it kept you playing because there's simply so much to do. Unlike companies like Gameloft whose only priority is graphics and nothing else, these games aren't simple 3-hour games where you walk from the beginning of the level to the end in a straight linear path and killing every single enemy. Who cares if Hero of Sparta had great graphics? I'm betting Hero of Sparta 99, if that ever comes out, will still be the same old concept as Hero of Sparta 1, except now it has better graphics than Crysis. It will still be the same old muscular looking dude with a sword, dual-stick controls, walk around and kill all enemies with no storyline. Dead Space for mobile, unfortunately, followed the same path. Yay good graphics, yay good sound effects, so? Anything new here other than the fact now NOVA's robotic looking character is replaced by a guy wearing some spacesuit, and robot enemies are now replaced by ugly alien zombies? Still the same walk-around-and-shoot, still the same find-that-key-and-unlock-the-door-in-the-same-room, still the same short game that gets deleted after being finished.
I dont agree with dead space being junk. Its similar to the console version and many console games have the same kill enemy go down path etc. your talking about. Some people will complain and make excuses about why every game should be worth 99 cents. I only been here a couple of days and realize if a game isnt 99 cents, it gets attacked. Instead of toucharcade there should be a section called 99 cent arcade where the 99 cent gamers can go.
Ok I think that ppl are underestimating the idevice cuz when the ds and psp came out, they couldnt have console like games, but now we see the 3ds and NGP which can play console games. But I don't know why ppl pay a lot of money for psp and ds games but think that the iphone should have a $10 price limit. It may be a phone to some ppl, but to others its our primary game device, and its not fair that we can't get quality games because of all the cheepos who think angry birds is expensive. Im gonna delete angry birds right now actually... deleted. But seriously, we need to start asking for console game experiences on the iPhone.
