Always get a rescue one. Yes it's sad when they pass away but you would have done something amazing rehoming a rescue dog No point getting some puppy when there's 1000s of dogs needing homes

Just one pet, a leopard gecko. We'd have a cat or a dog or both, but one of our kids is both allergic and has asthma, so that's not going to work. Especially allergic to cats, but even dogs are trouble over extended periods of time.
