Well, I'm thinking about finally breaking down and just installing iOS 4.x on my 2nd gen iPod touch. (Yes, I know, why have I waited so long? :p) So I'm just wondering how long it will take, roughly?

I don't remember, but I don't think it was that long for my iPhone 4. You aren't going to have to reload anything. It just updates the firmware and reboots. The longest part is probably downloading the update, depending on your internet connection speed.

depends on how much stuff you'll be transferring back over.
if i were you i'd wait for 5 since it will be coming out in a few days.

Well, I would definitely recommend letting iTunes back up your iPod first. But that's just a normal sync thing. If you haven't synced in a long time, that could take quite a while. If it hasn't been that long then it shouldn't take that long. Anyway, sync it over night if you need to. It isn't strictly necessary, but is obviously a good idea.

Also, I don't think iOS 5 will work on the 2nd gen iPod touch, but I could be wrong.

So I just plug in my iPod, let it sync... then when it's done I update my iOS?

    Never done this before... haha.

Yes, that's it. UNLESS you have turned off backing up in the settings for you device. If you so then you can right click on your iPod in the sidebar of iTunes and select Backup Now or some such menu item name.

Alright, awesome! Thanks for the help! Ok, so I just downloaded iOS 4.2 but I haven't installed it yet, waiting for my iPod to finish syncing... and iOS 4.2 finished downloading, so how do I install it when it's done syncing? I can't find it anywhere

Oh. Click on your iPod in the side bar and you get several tabs. You want the first one (which should be up by default). There's a button on there Update.
