The title say's it all because my cousin is in 8th grade now and he wants to take AP classes in LAUSD. I do not know how people over there let you in to the AP programs so any advice would be helpful for my wonderful cousin :). O and thanks in advance.

AP in 8th grade? I live nowhere near LA, but this is how it usually works. Freshman is usually filled with stuff you have to take, like Bio and World History. As you move on, and you vaguely know what classes you're taking next, you have the option of taking a regular class (physics 1) or an advance class (physics 2). If you decide to take physics 2, it allows you to take AP physics the next year. A college-level class. Unless he's a prodigy, your cousin'll have to wait a couple years at least.

When I was in high school, Freshman & Sophomore year you had to take Pre-AP [insert subject] classes before you could take the AP class.

Shouldn't he have like counselor or something for that? Anyway, I think for 8th grade taking Algebra 1/Geometry, general advanced classes, and getting good grades is all he can do to qualify for AP classes in a couple of years. At least, that's how it works for my school...

AP course were always useless to me. I think it would be better to take college courses in college. I took some courses while I was in high school. Best to take it at a college IMO.

Just curious, why do you say this? Is it because of the difficulty of those classes or what?

There are courses that were meant to be taken in college. AP Calculus and English were worth taking in high school. AP History, Physics and Art History were not worth it in high school IMO; I didn't find those courses useful to me...

I didn't mean that AP courses were useless, I was wrong on that. I guess I was saying which courses were worth taking in high school.
