Sure, like they do for games in any other category (Action, Arcade, Kids etc.) Indie would just be a section like, say, "kids". It would remove absolutely nothing from your game in terms of the chance of being featured on the main games or apps page as it already is. There seems to be a misunderstanding though what I meant by "indie". Looking at some of the comments here it seems that some people think "indie" means "amateur/ bad" stuff. To me that's not the case: *originality*, not just team size, would be deciding factors for a game to be put in the spotlight in the Indie category. Certain bloggers and reviewers -- say, a daily Indie games review blog or monthly magazine -- could then save time by specifically visiting this section. In any case, I'm out of this thread in terms of pushing for the idea as the majority of you are not in favor. Steam has it, but apparently iTunes shouldn't, and that's OK of course. Thanks to everyone for the feedback! And good luck everyone, be they single games maker, teams, or big budget studios!
If originality is the key thing you are wanting to highlight, why potentially discriminate against the company that created it? Having a "Highly Original" category would be much easier for Apple to curate, treat all developers on an even footing with equal opportunity, and highlight quality original titles to consumers (who ultimately mostly don't care who made the title for the most part anyway).
I quite like the idea of "declaring yourself as a certain type of indie" with Apple. You would need to be able to verify this and then move categories if you expand as you develop. Maybe they could help indie's with paid features based on your team size. Why not have - single developer, indie team and software house that you can register as. Then have a cost scale based on this for say marketing and make it cheaper for registered single developers and the indie team accordingly. If you pay more, you'd have to give people something a bit extra just to even up the increased cost so the big software house still get increased value for money. If magazines and review sites did this as well, it could in turn create more revenue for them with more people advertising through them. Having more at a lower price could be better than a few at a higher price.
it's a good idea ~ but it would not work out as it would eventually go back to square one for everyone ~
