Thanks for the comments everyone. I know the whole K thing seems to have upset a lot people. Although I've never seen it done before, I believe that we do have the ability to rename the app. We'd have to rework the logo and a bunch of text too though, so it's really a choice between that and new features... I'm surprised to hear the backlash on OpenFeint, as we've been pretty happy with them so far. We're starting to integrate Game Center also, for people who prefer that flavor. Right now it's just achievements and leaderboards, but we'll likely do turn-based multiplayer once that is available through iOS 5 in the fall. As far as the iPad feedback goes, I'll mention it to our artist who can take a second look. We're preparing a presentation pack of sorts but it didn't address the texture on the table, which is what I'm assuming is coming under fire here. Anyway, have a great weekend and hopefully I'll see you online for some card (yeah, that's right I use a C when I want to) battles.
love the game I've been playing the game for a few days now online against a friend and making my way through the towers, and I have a question for Hamish. How are the players' decks selected for online multiplayer games? It seems some games I'm stacked with great cards from those I've earned and in others I can pretty much tell I'm doomed from the get-go. As we can't build our own decks, can you describe how they're built so I know what I'm dealing with? Are they really picked randomly from all available cards in that mana class or is it a little bit more specific (1 card with a cost < 2, 1 with a cost <5, etc, etc). Love the game, can't wait until it's released in other countries and there's more people online.
Name Just let the K be! It is a beautiful and underused letter in the English language. Also, it makes the game easier to Google and it never hurt Mortal Kombat.
Deception Kards Another question.... I see the opponent using Deception cards. Is that something restricted to the AI opponent or is there some way I can add these kards to my deck? Perhaps by Mastering a Mage? On a related note, I can't wait until an M marks the opponents defeated at Master Level. In general, what other cards (besides those in the standard classes , the pet and the stone spynx), if any, can be earned and added to one's deck by accomplishing other things in the game?
Hi JohnnyBoy, thanks for the comments. Here's how it works. Cards are divided into 3 ranks based on their casting cost. Rank 1 are cards that cost 1-4. Rank 2 are cards that cost 5-8. Rank 3 are cards that cost 9-12. For each type of magic (fire, air, earth etc) you get a randomly selected card from each rank. Plus you get one random card that can be selected from any of the ranks - a wild card. so: 1 random rank 1 card 1 random rank 2 card 1 random rank 3 card 1 random card from any rank Out of curiosity, what situations make you think you are starting with a losing hand?
Hey Johnnyboy, here are the answers to your other questions. Regarding the Deception cards, those are used by another mage type that isn't available yet. I'd love to tell you more, but our marketing director might shoot me if I let that cat out of the bag Needless to say, you'll be able to collect those cards and many more in the future... Great to hear you're looking forward to having Tower battles show up as "Mastered". Rather than the "M", we just put "Mastered" across the opponent image. It looks cool because defeating an opponent on an easier level will give them the red slash and then "Mastered" appears over the top of that. As far as collecting other cards goes, you can get the pet but you can't get the Sphynx. That card awakens on the field for that battle - an issue we fixed for the upcoming 1.1 release. Aside from that, everything you can collect is in your Collection screen, but stay tuned for more information on new cards generally. All good questions, and there will be a lot more information coming soon. By the way, what do you guys think of being able to earn different pets? The idea came up today. Maybe throw us some pet suggestions if you like and we'll look into what it would take to make that happen.
Thanks for the detailed breakdown silverfish! As for examples of combinations that make losing hands, its much less of an issue now that I'm finishing the towers and have the full set of cards for each mage. Also, as I get better at the game I'm getting better at using the cards I have in different situations.
So they're from another mage type, that explains it. I found they often came out of left field and I was never prepared for them. There's one spell kard that is not that expensive and takes away 12 life from the opponent and especially caught be my surprise more than once (I don't remember the name). As for the Sphynx, I've never been able to release it so I have no idea what it does.
Cool. Another change we've made is to include the name of the mage class you're about to fight in the Tower, so it'll be clearer that you're fighting a Deception mage or a Death mage, etc.
Yep. We're now just putting the finishing touches on our advertising campaign and lining up a special launch day promotion. Once that's done we'll announce the date and I'm sure it'll be here before you know it. Thanks so much to everyone who has left feedback via in the in-game button or here on the forums. The reviews on the App store are coming in strong. The only thing holding us back from a truly great rating is a misconception that we're stealing from Spectromancer. There are plenty of blatant rip-offs on the App Store so I can totally understand that reaction, but in the case, 3 Donkeys have partnered with us and everything is above board. If you love the game then don't forget to review it!
I disagree. the graphics are putting me off. I love the card art, but that's about it. I need a great looking game to help me grow an interest and loyalty in a game. sure, the mechanics are great too, but so are the mechanics of ascension. what ascension has over kard combat is the great overall polish and high standard of graphics and interface. you're blind if you can't see that. hothead, I really want to love this game, I love many others of yours, so promise me, and people like me, that you will try to overhaul the whole interface/graphics and give us something that does you and your game justice, because as time goes by, I'm getting more and more choice in similar games, and as it stands, kard combat just doesn't cut it.
Just because you don't like the interface does not mean it's terrible and no one else likes it. I LIKE the way the game looks as is. Very stylish and puts the emphasis on the cards and game play and I am not blind..
Worldwide release coming soon! Hothead Marketing reporting in... I know we should't tease you too much with the release date as I know there is a lot of anticipation for the worldwide launch but I can assure you that it is coming very soon...we will be able to reveal more next week, so look out for that. In the meantime we are working on a video walkthrough of a game with our Producer Hamish guiding viewers through the twists and turns of an epic Kard battle. This will be released later this week, once we have finished editing it. If you need more info whilst you wait patiently for the game, then please read through The Examiner's Q&A on Kard Combat that reveals a little more on teh game and what it was like to partner with Richard Garfield Q&A is posted here Launch plans are nearly all tied down so prepare yourselves as soon it will be time to "BEGIN"
