I'm feeling a little better today.

They're a little better, but not massively better. It's mostly a status symbol.

We'll see how it works, heh. If it works well, we can maybe expand the concept a bit. If it doesn't work too well, it'll still have novelty value and we'll figure out ways to make it better.

    - Big revamps to the challenge system.
    - OpenFeint 2.4
    - New level set: The Hat Dimension / Hat Cosmos / Hatter Space (Difficulty: Hardest Ever)
    - Option to replace Ghosts with an unobtrusive indicator.
    - Our second (and last) DLC, which is cosmetic only. Depending on which DLC between our two is more popular, we'll adjust our plans for DLC in future games accordingly.
    - Other stuff I'm forgetting right now.

Thruster should just be the rocketboots button.

Hookbot can't use a shotgun, and his version of the rocketboots (the steam thruster) recharges. Because of this, he doesn't use the rocketfuel upgrades.

    NO!

Besides the strategic use of the shotgun (I use all 4 of Gunny's) and rocket boots (I use 2), there are two bits that I think can suck away a lot of time. The first is that slot you have to drop down, and the second is the section immediately after that where you go up a bit, across for the coins, and then back down.

I don't really know how to describe it, but there seems to be a sweet spot to how you can hit sections where you have no choice but to slam into a wall. Of course, hitting it at full speed up high will result in a longer slide down. For that first slot, if you can swing right, you should basically land right in it and slide down a short bit, for that second section, if you get the swing right, you will only hit the very bottom portion of the column.

Sorry, that is really hard to describe, and that probably won't make any sense. I have just found that you have to finesse your swing just right in sections where you can't avoid hitting a wall. Otherwise, I've lost up to half a second (at least) when I hit the wall wrong.

After reading your post, I had to go play Golden Monkey again. I was able to get a 7182 (1:10:39).

I actually know exactly what you're talking about, hitting those 2 spots perfectly shaves a lot of time off your score, I've been working on it. Golden Monkey is my closest one to #1 so I have to somehow miraculously get it lol. I've actually just been using HB because its a nice change of pace, I was guessing the lack of shotgun is what is keeping me from scoring higher.

Yeah, the shotgun is key on all of the Monkey levels. Fire a shot at the beginning (that goes for a lot of levels) to get you moving at full speed as quickly as possible. You can also use shotgun blasts after sections where you hit a wall. As soon as you slide below it, fire a shot to get you moving again.

And I apologize for making it that much harder to get #1 on Golden Monkey. :)

Siiiigh..and I was just beginning to get used to HB..but yea I guess I'll just have to mess with Gunny some more..I think I might just move on to some other random level as I don't see myself beating that score..lol.

And qpawn has already surpassed my Golden Monkey score. He has to be reading this forum. Either that or he constantly checks his scores. I mean he did that in less than 2 hours after I posted my score here. I've run that level so many times, and i just tonight broke my old high score. I don't know how he does it so fast.

That's what I'd like to know, it really is weird..if not suspicious. I don't understand how he/she manages to do it so quickly.

qpawn is clearly some sort of unholy machine, sitting in a basement with no internet connection or 3G signal, playing endlessly until he finally beats our scores.

I'm still beating him on Golden Skull, though. How'd ya like that, qpawn? Let's see how long it takes from me posting this message to him beating my score by 2 points.

I don't think it took him that long, because I see he got Golden Skull. Sorry about that. He seems to go after the levels that I play. The reason I say that is because I just recently passed him on Golden Skull, and took first for Stone Rat and Golden Frog. What a surprise when I saw he had topped me in all 3. Coincidence?

Last night I also beat him on Silver Monkey and Golden Wimpy. He already reclaimed those. Beat me by 2 points on Golden Wimpy -- really?? It took me over a month of playing that level off and on to beat him by 1.

Strange thing is he left all of my other high scores alone. For now that is.

Zoo, I think your description of qpawn might be spot on. :)

Kepa, question about the new level set...are Hat Dimension, Hatter Space and Hat Cosmos three possible names for one 4-level collection, or are they 3 individual 4-level collections. Basically is the new level set 4 new levels or 12?

Ha, the fact that he never really challenged my score until I posted that leads me to believe that he does at least read these forums. My best run was far from perfect but still, he beat me by a respectable 7 points. The way he's belligerently beating all your scores is bizarre, though. So I'm guessing my description was right, unless Kepa has coded some Hook Champ bot that beats our scores by a tiny amount to keep us playing.

On an unrelated note, I've seen people saying they've seen Hookbot placing good scores on the boards - how can you tell? The hat seems to change next to your score dependent on what hat you're currently using, rather than which you were wearing when you set the score.

Edit: didn't see before, he beat you on Gold Bull by 1 point. Ouch.

Yeah, it is strange how relentless he is. I have no desire to take his #1 overall score, but I guess he just has that competitive edge. I had seen that he got the Golden Bull score the other day. Again, that was a level that I hadn't played much, and I know he was down around 5th or so on total score. So he hadn't been playing it until we did. I've tried Golden Bull a few times, but I think I just got lucky the other day as I can't cone close. :)

I've tried Silver and Golden Bull a few times, I beat my best on Silver but I doubt I'll be claiming #1 any time soon. Golden Skull will be mine again, though. :) Hopefully these new super hard Outer Space levels will good for speed runs - I don't like the Rat levels enough to play them repeatedly. What do you think about the Minigore crossover?

What does the block buster do for Hookbot? Have it but no button appears...

It makes Hookbot more powerful when it comes to swinging through blocks. There is no button, just swing towards a column of blocks like you normally would and you'll see the difference.

Há!! So YOU are the mikeg :D

Just kidding, i am trying to beat you at the Bronze Wimpy (the only level that i really play for the leaderboards :p) but i couldnt and right now only 1 point (or 0:00:03) is between us :D

Of course you still own the global leaderboard, but just by 2 points :p I think qpwn stands in second with 1 less than you.

I already have the crown, but didnt got the achievement at that time, so now i am trying again, or waiting until they reset the leaderboards. Just would like to say it was a pleasure to "meet" you :D

If possible, send me a challenge in this level, showing how you run it... or i can send you mine, just so we can see if there are something different we are doing... i almost thinking that we are reaching the perfect time in this level... cant find anything else to really improve the time!!

Just a quick bug report, still occasionally go through the level geometry when using rocket boots. It seems to happen when I'm near the top of a row of blocks, I start to slide forward like usual, but just pop out above the level top. Believe it happened last time on gold frog? Not 100% though.

Love the game, rare bug but worth a look.

Good luck with Golden Skull. I'm happy with my fourth place finish at this point. But I'll probably try and play that level every so often to see if I can't finally get the end cleanly. I've had runs down in the 1:48 time, but I always miss stuff when I get that.

I do look forward to the Outer Space levels. I like the Rat levels. They aren't my favorite, and are definitely tough -- long and unforgiving of any little mistake.

I can't say that I'm excited about the Minigore crossover thing. I'd rather see more levels and/or other content. But if the crossover works to help bring Rocketcat more money, etc. for future updates and games, then I'm all for it. I think Minigore had (or still does) a lot of potential, but there just isn't enough substance to keep me going. I haven't even tried the latest update, and I think I played the previous update once.
