Hey! I'm new here to this forum and big big fan of Hook Champ. I really do like the Hookbot character. I don't know about you guys but it can be a bit difficult to go backwards with a curse waiting right there to eat you. ALTHOUGH! It is too late but Kepa and co, you guys should have banned Hookbot from being able to get on the leaderboards. It's unfair to the other characters who don't have the luxury of a ghost not chasing him/her. Paid cosmetic DLC is the probably the way to go. Or release juicy like a t-bone level packs as DLC. You guys have already went above and beyond the call of duty with this game. The original was honestly 100% complete in my eyes. I'm not sure if you guys have considered this or not, but what about making a different kind of Hook Champ where the levels are really big and exploration is key. Kind of like a Metroid or Castlevania. I'm an exploration junkie as well as speed demon.
I would imagine Hookbot isn't the best character for speedruns. He's good to learn a level slowly but his steam recharge really slows him down. Either way if you're getting on the leaderboards you're not worried about the chaser.
I really like hookbot. I hope the devs offer some more level packs via DLC soon This game is fantastic.
I'm a little suspicious also, especially since his scores aren't recorded on the regular boards. qpawn, if you're on this forum, please make yourself known.
I'm not at the point of suspicion, yet, but I've noticed that most other players have a level (or a few) that they pick to play and do really well at, and qpawn has high scores for just about every level. So he must be not recording his scores as a strategy. In fact, I never see his OF scores change until he beats me, whereas, my scores increase incrementally, and they are visible to all. He also seems to beat a lot of my scores by 1, 2, or 3 points. I'll feel like I just had the perfect run, and within 24 hours, he has beaten me by a point. Like I said, he is probably just good, but I still have a hard time believing it. EDIT: Yes, qpawn, if you are reading this, let it be known. I'd love to know how you do it. For starters, I'd hazard to guess that you never sleep... EDIT2: I understand that when you start to reach a limit for how fast a level can be ran, that you will most likely beat out others by a point or two at the most. I guess it is just with what ease he seems to do it. At this point, I can't even come close to my Bronze and Silver Bull times that I got a couple of days ago. It's like I need to find the right rhythm which I am out of right now.
I just bought Hookbot, he's worth the $1. And I'm not one to buy something for a game if i don't have to. Love this game.
No, I've been playing the game since the day it came out- I think I know who the chaser is!! I'm talking about a human the same size and look as Jake and swings the same as you- he's only been here since I last updated the game. Luckily I got a screenshot of him, so you can see for yourselves.
I like Hookbot. I was going to post that my vote is for the DLC to stay the same; that is, the character is not purely cosmetic but also not essential to playing/enjoying the entire game. I hadn't considered the beginner's lament in this case--having to pay 99c to get an unchased character that can help you to learn levels. I will say that the bad reviews on the Appstore that I've seen have basically been of the 'DLC sucks! Should be free! I want more levels!' variety, rather than specifically noting that the DLC character would be good for beginners or make the game easier. Still, I feel like it's simply a neat bonus to have Hookbot available. If only for the fact that he can be equipped with a viking helmet. Basically, I vote for whatever keeps Rocketcat updating Hook Champ and developing games. If they see a significant drop in ratings on the AppStore because DLC is available, which in turn affects sales, it's understandable to want to change the model. I like this game.
It's kind of hard to see from your screenshot, but are you talking about your ghost? Since the first update, the game saves a "ghost" of your best run through a level. That way, if you're trying to beat your best score, you have a real-time visual representation to know how you're doing against. You can turn off the ghost in the options screen. Apologies if this is totally NOT what you're referring to. This might be the raddest quote I've ever seen. Fixed. We know how you really feel
Why don't you do what everyone else seems to be doing and release episodes as new apps? Toybot stories 1,2,3, I dig it 1, 2, The quest, and so on. 1-2 characters, 3 map sets, a few new items and you have yourself a new package. Your first update had 2 map sets and the DLC has a character, so you were mostly there. Charge full price and no one will blame you- the DLC was priced at 50% of the release price point and it has one character in it. Those willing to pay that would pay more to get more, those who weren't would not feel they are being taken for a ride. I can understand that you may think you don't have the name recognition to be putting out episodes, but this may help you build on top of your good start and you get the revenue without the bad feelings, which don't help you get the name recognition you are looking for anyway. And all the people who are buying the DLC can support you by getting the new episode.
I was very happy with the update. More hats! Though I will not rest until you have a moose hat ( eg http://www.starcostumes.com/lgimages/J19726.jpg ). Jester's cap would be nice too, and an old-fashioned policeman's helmet, and definitely a fascinator. And a dunce's cap. And a diver's bell. (You'll tell me half of these are in already now). I've already put in 20 hours or more on Hook Champ, so spending an extra 59p was a complete no-brainer for me. I need to go try out Hookbot on Rat and Skull, especially Rat where I can't find the hidden things because I keep getting eaten. But on the earlier levels where I'm doing speed runs, I don't like Hookbot much; I especially don't like that his boost is one-at-a-time; personally I often do two boosts in a row. Even for exploring that would be useful, surely? Obviously having another use for multiple thousands of gold is nice. I like that there are both cheap things and expensive things too. I understand the DLC argument in general; so many games are essentially unplayable without the DLC. But Hookbot shouldn't trouble the leaderboards much (though I notice that some people have set top-ten scores with him; wow), and you get a great, lengthy game without buying any DLC. The only problem, as others have said, is that Hookbot is a great character for beginners and kids, who are the least likely to want to pay for DLC. But I really like that Hookbot isn't an entirely cosmetic character; that as a hardcore player I'm getting extra functionality for my 59p. The solution might be to have a DLC character who is hook champ addict friendly -- eg shorter rope and slower on the ground but very very fast at swinging or something like that. Or actually make DLC unavailable to anyone who hasn't unlocked a gold hat addiction achievement. That would, I think, prevent one-star reviews from people who think you're just taking money out of people. Did I mention that I *love* this game?
Oh yes and also: Carmen Miranda, easter bonnet, mohican, tricorn, viking hat with pigtails for Gunny, tam o'shanter, mob cap, coolie hat (er, 'conical straw hat'), winged helmet of Mercury, big headphones, balaclava, deely boppers, bobble hat, flat cap, panama hat, bearskin, bridal tiara & veil (for Hookbot I should think), bishop's mitre, mortarboard... I could go on...
Hey, I bought this game yesterday and I've played it a little while, and while I really like it, I kinda wish I had spent one or two dollars instead of three, because all the levels are pretty similar. Also, while having Hookbot as DLC may make you the most money, it's really disappointing not to be able to see the whole levels without that thing chasing you. Maybe I'm missing something, but if you could add a feature where after you have beaten the level you can buy a map of it (not a map that unlocks new levels, but a map that shows you the layout of the level you just beat), that would be cool. This might make Hookbot less important so I understand if you don't want to do it. Still, I'm happy I bought Hook Champ and maybe I'll buy the DLC later, but for now it doesn't look like it. Good luck, and keep the updates coming, because updates are good persuasion for spending more money on the game.
I really don't understand hate on DLC... The demand for these things to be free is ludicrous. They worked on them, they were not part of the game to begin with, and yet some think they shouldn't have to pay for new things? I love that they have released free updates and improvements, but to suggest that is, in any way, mandatory is kinda naive. I love the game Rocketcat made for me, but I'm pretty sure they like money just like the rest of us, and can't just sit around adding things to the game without additional income coming in. That being said, if they had released the game and then the DLC was like... for the last set of levels or something, that'd be another story altogether. I think they are, if anything, conservative in their DLC so far.
@golob: Keep playing, I'm glad you're enjoying it so far. But I think the more you play, the more you'll see that all the levels are quite different from each other, even if a lot of the core elements are the same. And plus, if you really get into this game, you'll be trying to find the fastest way through every level. Then you REALLY see how different they can be from each other. I kinda like your idea about a map of the levels, but I think after a while you'll find you don't really have any trouble figuring out where things are. And if you really want to explore then you could drop a buck on the Hookbot. Keep at it, though, because if you just got the game yesterday you haven't even scratched the surface of enjoyment you're going to have.
They're really not, except inasmuch as the basic mechanic is the same. But the strategies required for the different levels are very different; some repay speed and some repay care, for example. And the three characters all play differently. Plus there are lots of secrets, and some of them are quite subtle.
"This might be the raddest quote I've ever seen. " Thank you kindly. "Fixed. We know how you really feel ;0)" Wait, how'd you do that? Can you edit another poster's post? By the way, how can I quote only parts of posts from messages? Seems like I should know this by now, and I assume it's something to do with either multiquote or quick quote.
I dont mind paying for any kind of DLC if its: a) a game that has offered a lot of free updates and is awesome (like hook champ) and b) is good value for money, like hookbot is. I think the reason why so many people are pissed at fieldrunners devs are that the app itself is expensive (i paid £3) and it has had no major content updates and wants another 59p per map which is just greedy, thats why im not buying that DLC, yet i have bought hookbot. Hope this helpa Kepa
