I think I only used 2 shotgun blasts on my best Golden Bull run. No doubt someone will destroy my score now the update is out and people have 4 blasts to play with.
I think I might know what the issue is. This is the order of events that occurred before I noticed something was weird: 1. Playing Stone Wimpy, I beat my old highscore, ghost option is ON. 2. Ghost saves properly, but gets a little distracting, so I turn the option to HIDE and continue my attempts to beat the new highscore. 3. While beating the new highscore my wifi cuts out, ghost option still off. This run is currently my all-time highscore (#1 on local board) 4. I turn the ghost option back ON to race my new ghost, but notice it's still the run from step 1, from when I first beat the old highscore (now #2 on the local board) 5. I end up beating the old #2 score, so the ghost run is now #3. The #1 highscore doesn't change; ghost remains #3. Sorry if this is confusing, I was trying to be thorough. Is the ghost old because I had the ghost option off when I got my #1 score? Will it update if I beat the #1 score with the option ON?
FANTASTIC UPDATE The addition of ghosts was GENIOUS. Seriously, that alone makes this one of the, if not THE most addictive iPhone game. I also love the openfeint features; the achievements are really cool, and everything is well implemented. And of course, the hats are badass. Killer job guys, Hook Champ went from great to excellent with this update, and I hope you guys have planned to release even more new levels, hats, etc.
Yeah, sorry, I wasn't trying to single you out. I just happened to play Golden Bull when I noticed that yesterday. I was really thinking along the lines that people put in a lot of time trying to get those original high scores, and now that the update is out, those scores might not necessarily hold, because, as you pointed out, the extra shotgun blasts with Gunny can give an advantage. But I guess that is how it goes. It doesn't necessarily make me want to spend hours and days trying to get a high score, as I had on Bronze Bull and more recently Stone Monkey. EDIT: though I should say that some of the #1 scores might not be beatable given the update. There are some really tough times to beat (Stone Bull for example).
I agree that some of the amazing scores people recorded before the update should be preserved. I hadn't really thought about the unfair advantage I had playing as Gunny before the update was officially released, before you pointed it out. I don't find that the additional shotgun blasts make much difference speed-wise though, when I compare a good swing against a blast using ghosts it doesn't seem much/any quicker. In the next update, can we get an option to quickly switch between characters please? Having to go into the shop, scroll down and select one is slightly irritating. Maybe just have an icon on the map screen for each character. Also, no bonus hat for getting all OpenFeint achievements?
I noticed the same thing about the shotgun as well zoo. The shotgun only gives you an edge when you use it after slowing down (bumped into a wall) or from a dead stop; ie you can accelerate faster to max speed with the shotgun than by pulling yourself with the hook, in most if not all cases. I found a shotgun blast right at the beginning of some levels to help cut my times by ~ .2 -.3 sec if timed correctly. This is how I achieved a sub 37 sec. run on Stone Wimpy.
I have to agree with both of you about the shotgun. For the most part, it won't be a huge advantage having the extra blasts, but in some situations it can. Like justbanter, I use a shotgun blast at the very start of a level to get moving fast from a dead stop. There are also other certain situations where I think the extra blasts will help. EDIT: I was able to just improve my Stone Monkey time using Gunny and her extra shotgun blasts. Whether they really helped, who knows...
Agreed, I only find the shotgun useful at the start of the level to make Gunny accelerate away quicker. There are a couple of other situations when they're useful, such as when you've had to do an awkward manoeuvre to get a gem. Kepa has beaten my Golden Bull score anyway.
Just reclaimed Golden Bull. And I did it with Jake, who does seem to have an advantage on this level.
Nice job! The final crumbling block section always screws me up. I would imagine that Gunny's extra shotgun blasts would help me out there. I apologize if this has been answered, but is there any difference between Jake and Gunny besides the hots pants (for Jake) and extra shotgun blasts (for Gunny)? I'm curious as to why you think Jake has an advantage on Golden Bull.
Man, what a great update!! New levels, more hats, Gunny, achievements and OpenFeint... Made this game even better than it already was!! Hope to see even more stages in later updates! Maybe some slight scenery changes, and some hats that add more than just looks. Speaking of that, was a hard hat with a working light on it in this update, or is that going to be in an upcoming update?
Yeah that last corridor with the destructable walls is a bitch. I know I can shave about a second off my best time still thanks to a poor performance on that section. The advantage Jake has is down to his unique item, you can use it to give yourself a headstart over Gunny. If I spell it out you might use it to dethrone me though (if you don't already use this trick).
I just moved into third, on Golden Bull, using Gunny. And I still messed up the ending, so I know I can shave a couple of seconds there. And I could already outrun that ghost, so I am able to shave some time off of the rest of the run. Now if I can put it together, I might be able to challenge you for the top spot. I didn't know or use Jake's trick, but I think I just figured it out. I tried something that definitely gave me a good start over my Gunny ghost.

I'm still rocking first on Stone/Silver Bull. If anyone wants to challenge me on those levels, PLEASE DO! This new update is seriously awesome. My OF name is misterkenny, in-game name is beans.
Ok, I'll send you a challenge soon, most likely for one of the Bull levels. I've only raced Kepa properly so far, which was pretty tense. I was racing misterkenny when my girlfriend called me, leading to Jake plummeting unceremoniously into the lava. It was awful. Edit: misterkenny, the time you sent me on that challenge was extremely fast. I'm almost glad that call put me out of my misery.
It's possible that messes up the ghosts a little. We'll have to check. H ya we have plans. We tried not to make Gunny too much better than Jake. We want them to basically be interchangeable, iconic characters to the game. If it does turn out Gunny is way better, we'll give Jake a new item. It may not be necessary, though. Quick character switch is a good idea. No bonus hat for getting all Feint achievements because we're adding more achievements later. More stages, yes. Though not for update 2. Next new level in update 3. It will be worth the wait: The level will be all new technology, setting, and even game type. I'm going to go as far as to say that it's basically going to be like another 3 dollar game (hint) for free. No special stat-increasing hats, sorry. Special cosmetic hats (such as working lights) is either update 2 or 3. I'm extremely out of practice now. Whenever I play Hook Champ, it's always for a level that's not released yet. For instance, I stopped playing Rat like two weeks ago. I did accidentally get a new #1 Gold Bull time (for awhile) by complete accident, while doing a challenge. I don't even think I had the new items while getting that time, so I'm not quite sure how I managed that.
This sounds confusing, but exciting. New game type? I'm sooo glad you beat my previous best Gold Bull time by 'complete accident', when I originally saw it I was so incensed that I didn't stop playing until I'd regained #1. When I've been playing Gold Bull lately with ghosts on, I've noticed it has started to lag pretty badly when swinging over lava. Anyone else noticed this?
