The only way to get non basic cards, which have the silver gem (common), blue gem (rare), purple (epic) or gold ( legendary) is through opening packs or crafting them, which is made from dust when you disenchant cards you don't want.

My suggestion is to first craft the good neutrals.
They are usually behind class cards, but they can be used in any deck. The harvest golem and knife juggler are good ones to enchant as well as the argent commander.

Your best bet, if you want to get a good idea, is to google your fav class and deck and see what the netdecks show. People hate that since a lot of the decks are the same, but it will give you a good understanding of point value and the really good cards. Some classes are built for early play, some late play and some midrange.

An Aggro deck is a fast deck. Lots of low cards that have good synergy with each other and the plan is to hit the face quick. If you hold them off til round 7 or so, they lose a lot of steam if they have no card draw.

You got to be kidding me
I was playing as druid against a hunter and got to play a boulderfist orge on TURN ONE with two Innervate and the coin I got for playing 2nd. My oppoment plays a secret and I attacked with my boulder fist ogre but it turns out the secret was freezing trap and it got sent back costing 2 more mana

I've played since the Mac beta, still really enjoy it, and I've spent $3. I have several legendaries. I usually just play until I've met my daily quests, many of which have nothing to do with winning. I'm working on one now to destroy 40 minions.

Those were both good draws! :)

*sigh* I didn't even make it 24 hours before reinstalling. Blizzard needs to set up a addiction help line, or something.

If all you want is to unlock it, just beat the AI in practice.

I have bad luck with warlocks, too. Last week, I droped 3 in a row to 'locks all running the EXACT SAME DECK.

Whomped by the same 7 cards 3 times in a row. Quite embarrassing.

I have a few Legendaries but never use them in my Priest deck - I use the Legendaries put down by the opponent. Mind Control ;)

First aren run and get 4-3 using hunter
This was pretty unexpected since I barely used hunter before and my hunter was only level 4 when I started

    @Brrobotix and Wolpak,

    Thanks for the advice.

You are both right: cannot specialize with my current card availability, so my Mage Aggro deck is more mid-range / control. That said, even with limited [class] card availability, the ability to influence outcomes is in initial card selection and decision-making during play i.e. what card to play, and when to play it.

I've been making tweaks to my Mage deck to get a better feel for what works / doesn't work (against mainly AI), and also correcting errors in my play. I'm still in the MTG mindset where I sometimes fail to attack the opposing Hero with a Taunt when my opponent had no Taunts on the board - thinking that I need to block during my opponents turn.

I've also need to achieve a better balance between patience and aggression to obtain better card value / exchange. The latter also demonstrates the need for a better understanding of how the different archetypes play, types of decks, and common cards used in play.

I've switched from Mage (unlocked) to work on unlocking Druid. The only Class I haven't been able to unlock with my Mage deck is Warrior: I always come within an agonizing 1 or 2 health points of applying the coup de grace before the deck runs out of steam, and is steam-rolled by the big-hitters.

Mage deck for Daily Quests and work on unlocking Druid.

    "Are you coming to bed!"
    "I can't. This is important"
    "What?
"Someone is beating me on Hearthstone!"

Note: My previous post commenting that I had played my first Arena was in error. It was my first casual play (current record is 2-3 - just had a win over a Rogue deck in casual).

So, now I finally find out Arena is everything... once you are good enough in arena, you get refund gold plus a expert deck, and cards are just given randomly, you have no disadvantage as a newcomer except for game experience.

I just spent my first 150gold for an entrance, hunter/worrior/shaman. Which one is better?

Here is a good document put together by some gurus which value all cards based on class.

    https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/pub?key=0AifXEOqTcGcLdFVvWk1GRjVJTHJUaTVLcGViR1RRTFE&gid=19

The tab that discusses class descriptions gives a ranking of the best to the worst, with the clear cutoff of top 5 and bottom 4. While mostly I agree, I do disagree with some stuff.

Top 2 in terms of getting most average wins is Mage and then Paladin. Both classes benefit from not needing combos to win, which hurts them in ranked, but benefits them in arena. Why? Because you can't set up your deck as you want. So, their individual cards are much more suited to this kind of play. I usually grab either of these guys when they show up, but they aren't the funnest to play.

A skilled player can make Rogue as good or better than the top 2. I am not skilled with Rogue at all and I usually botch up my draft. But if you are good with the mechanics, he is a solid 3.

Next is Shaman and Druid, and I give Shaman the edge as he can put tokens on the field. Minions are key to arena as you cannot craft your deck, and you are likely stuck with a bunch of average minions. Adding more can only help.

In my eyes, Warlock, if played correctly, can be top 4. I'll pick him before Druid and Rogue and even up with Shaman. I have gotten 12 wins with him and 0 wins, but mostly because of how I draft. While Warlocks are great early rushers in ranked, I think they are great late game here. Get as many taunts and big minions as you can to protect your face and you will find that when you are top decking (meaning you have no cards except the one from the top of your deck) you have the advantage cause you can draw a second. Of course, Mages are their arch enemy due to spells that smack the face around, but I have been digging Warlocks lately.

Priests are more novelty than anything, but definitely the weakest of all the arena classes. I actually like to draft them on occasion, because they can be more fun to play than the others.

Warriors are a mixed bag. They need their weapons. I am not good with Warriors, so I always skip them.

Hunters are very combo reliant and need specific decks set up. This doesn't work well in the arena.

I personally would go with shaman. The hero ability to spawn totems is rather powerful in the minion heavy meta of Arena

EDIT: Wolpak beat me to it and said it so much better!

Rogues and Mages are beasts in the Arena.

It never expires and fortunately, you can take as much time during your draft as you'd like.

Yep - once you get good in Arena (and everyone will do, eventually, through practice and experience) that's the way to go instead of straight-up purchasing packs! There are days when I'm a bit impatient and just purchase 1 pack here and there but for the most part Arena should be the go-to purchase in Hearthstone.

Here's my Shaman arena draft, just wanna know is it good or bad generally? Any thoughts of deck itself or strategy to play is appreciated.
    1 forked lightning
    1 lightning bolt *2
    1 rockbiter weapon
    1 stonetusk boar
    2 stormforged axe *2
    2 dire wolf alpha *2
    2 flametongue totem
    2 youthful brewmaster
    3 feral spirit
    3 acolyte of pain
    3 emperor cobra
    3 flesheating ghoul
    3 jungler panther
    3 unbound elemental
    4 3/5 taunt
    4 spellbreaker *2
    4 windspeaker
    5 bloodlust *2
    5 abomination
    5 frostwolf warlord
    5 stormpike commado
    6 fire elemental *2
    7 ravenholdt assassin

Edit: get me a 3/3, guess not bad for first try. And I will definitely craft some spellbreakers for ranked.
Next round I'm lucky enough to pick mage, first draft:
And it seems the game tries to balance mage by giving me bad draft choices, constantly I have to choose from 2 below average and 1 bad... my largest minion is a 5 mana one... and I have no buff minions, guess I'll rely on spells...

Forget unlocking Druid - Priest looks as though it will press all of my old Chanter [EverQuest] buttons.

May not be the best choice for newbies or in the Arena; that said, I'd rather play a deck that I find enjoyable - and work towards the goal of improving it - than play the 'net deck game.

Mage for casual play for the dailies (until I build up a Priest deck), then switch to Priest. Note: I'll need to create decks for all the other classes to understand how the other classes work, strengths & weaknesses, common decks [meta], how they play, key cards, etc to perform in Arena.

Note: just achieved 3 wins in casual play. My record is now 3-5. I have to congratulate my opponent IGotThePower, running a basic Hunter Deck because it became a very, very tight game, with both of us top-decking on 1 health each. I won via my Hero Power. What really helped me win was side-boarding in Flamestrike into my deck, because I lost the previous 2 casual games (Priest and Paladin) due to the all too familiar theme of my deck running out of steam, unable to wear down defences quickly enough [Taunt], and lack of board removal. Flamestrike solves most of those problems with a board reset.

Achieved 1 Daily; running close to achieving the other 2. All Dailies completed! 130 gold, and now 4-5. Thank you once more to my opponent (Mage deck) - different Mage strategy, and a match that required careful thinking.

Ok! Time to focus on Chile vs Spain.

Bad form to post twice in succession, so I do apologise. However, I must express my admiration for both Hearthstone and Blizzard. They [Blizzard] have absolutely nailed it!

    - Fun right off the bat
    - Streamlined and simplified rules
    - Surprising amount of depth and variation
    - Generous IAP that incentives players to play online
    - Online play is easy, fun, and most importantly, not forced
    - Freedom from the outset to create decks
    - Wide variety of play-modes
    - Polished without over elaborating
    - Natural touch-screen controls
    - Defined emotes (preventing abusive players)

Blizzard are not revolutionary; they seem to take their time, analyse what has / hasn't worked and produce a product that is fun, fun, fun without the flaws that other competing products have.
