Bah I had the WORST luck in the arena last night going 3-2, I thought I had a great deck. I drew Ysera, Deathwing and the faceless manipulator. Again I played and struggled w a few hunters but at least kept the matches extremely close. What really ticked me off was when I was able to play 2 Yseras and still managed to lose, I was about ready to fling the iPad out the window :p. Oh well, still love the game and really enjoy the arena.

Grats on getting Tirion, I have him in my Paladin deck and love his deathrattle.

Grats! Sadly, pallys pretty weak right now, and the viable ones doesn't use Tirion as they are mostly rush/aggro deck.

But playing control pally (with lots of heal) is very fun to play despite not viable. :D

Thanks for the encouragement. In one of the arena games my opponent ended up with a 24/24 minion by switching health and attack, buffing his health and then doubling both. I had no decent cards to counter so just admired this amazing combo.
Love the game - I've been playing video games since the '80s and this is one of the best. I haven't played another game since I downloaded it. Totally addictive and so much to learn.

I have a miserable time in arena, and I'm certain it's because I'm horrible at building the right deck.

I can't even build a decent deck for ranked play. I win more games by simply hitting "done" while te deck is empty and let the game auto-fill the entite deck. The decks I build myself end up complete failures.

I'm no stranger to card games. I first started playing them back when Magic was new. I'm a decent player in Hearthstone, as I can maintain board control and card advantage fairly well. I just can't seem to build a deck that's worth a damn.

So when it comes to arena, I'm lucky to get even one win.

Does anyone have any tips on deck construction, both for ranked and arena? The only legendary I have is the promo gnome from beta and I only have 3 epics, 2 for mage and 1 for rogue (despite opening at least 25-30 packs so far). I've never drawn a legendary in arena. :/

Which epic and legendaries are those? Do you mean the golden gelbin from the beta promo? What classes do you play? On the subject of arena someone posted a tier card list with a mana curve guide.. Do look it up..

Any reason why people will use all their mana and obviously have no options but will sit there until the timer runs down every turn? Probably the most annoying thing about this game.

I was that guy in a few matches today, not on purpose though. The servers kept losing their connection. I would make my moves, then it would lose connection before I could end my turn. when it finally reconnected, the fuse was already on the screen and I had to rush to make my move. This happened a few times. Blizzard needs to up their server capacity.

Yeah, the Gelbin beta promo card. The three epics I have are pyroblast and spellbender for mage and kidnapper for rogue. I don't really stick to any particular classes right now.

Thanks for the tip on the tier card list. I will definitely look that up!

As suggested, referring to an Arena List while drafting is a must, unless you're very sure about what you're doing. :)

As far as constructed goes, I never hit done! I can only tell you how I put together my decks using only basic cards. It seems to work well enough for me, since I have no epics or legendaries.

The first thing I do is to add the no-brainer basic cards:
    2 X Sen'jin Shieldmasta
    2 X Chillwind Yeti
    2 X Shattered Sun Cleric

Next, I browse the Class-specific cards and pick two of each card that I like.

Fill in the remaining slots with Boulderfist Ogre, Stormwind Champion, one Stormpike Commando and a couple of cards with Battlecry: draw a card.

Thanks so much for this. I took your post as a guide and built a hunter deck (the class I've had the best luck with so far) and the deck has been doing much better. I did the same with th druid and it's working even better than the hunter deck.

I guess my biggest problem is understanding card value. I never saw chillwind yeti and shattered sun cleric as no-brainers (what does that say about me? lol!). Perhaps it's the product of too many years of building off-beat decks in MTG (creatureless control/millstone decks mostly).

You need to think outside the box and realize what is best possible way to play cards and chain their effects.
Like let's take gurubashi berserk 2/7 minion that gets +3 attack for every damage he takes. You don't have to wait for opponent to put some creature to damage it and get bonus effect you can damage it yourself with spells or hero power.
Same with acolyte of pain 1/3 creature that lets you draw card every time he takes damage.
Don't put many small monsters on board as many classes have cards that can clear them easily out , also don't rely on single minion and buff him continuously , better to spread buffs around and make opponent sweat more, it's more intimidating to see 3 medium monsters than one huge one.
ALWAYS have cards in deck that let you draw / get more cards faster, whoever has more cards in hand at given time usually wins as it can always counter more.

    Unleash the Hounds ;)

Good to know it's nerfed, but it feels like it's still going to define the meta like it did. Buzzard+UTH+Wolfcan still wreck boards and faces.

Any minion with health higher than his cost and with an attack will have some value. The higher the attack, the better the value. Reason is that it will have the potential to trade for 2 cards of equal cost at the least.

That's why the Yeti, and even the Boulderfist Ogres are go-to cards, unless you find a suitable replacement in their slots.

The Yeti has a bit higher value than most in this definition, because of how its "value" is cashed in during the midgame due to its cheap cost. The Boulderfist Ogre in the example above usually serves as a finisher, and a lot more cards can take the spot.

That said, this is not the only definition of value in Hearthstone.

Don't forget to add some molten giants if you have some. Hehe.

This site is great for Arena, suggesting cards based on priority to draft. A bit time consuming but it helps. Until you are familiar with it. Take note the number changes as you draft. It is never constant. For example, water elemental is 98 rating. If you already have 2-3, it goes down.

    Code:
    http://www.arenavalue.com/
I suck at arena, but had wins from 0-12. Here's what I can share (have been playing since closed beta)

    1. Arena is totally different from Constructed.
    2. Crappy constructed cards can be awesome in Arena (mad bomber, venture co, stormwind knight).
    3. Have a descent curve with 4-6 two drop minions, at least.
    4. Don't get too much spells, board presence is better, tempo in maintaining board control is key.
    5. Don't draft more than 4 of the higher cost cards, but four bolt or wrath, I'll take.
    6. Some of my most successful runs has 22-24 minions.
    7. Lastly, expect the unexpected. I always assume he has the answer/s to my threat. I always play safe.

For constructed decks and strategy, the best site I can share is reddit hearthstone and hearthstoneplayers.com

How I wish it went back to four mana. I'd rather face zoo locks rather than hunters. Zoo locks tend to have shorter matches and my rogue has better chances with it.

EDIT: Adding to EP's post above. One of the key to HS is trading 2-1 (2 of your opponent's cards to your 1). In which Yeti (can kill 4/4 and survive), Boulderfirst (can pretty much clear 2-3 minions), Argent Commander, and my Arena Favorite Stormwind Knight comes in. I can charge and kill a 4/2 and my stormwind knight still lives. Another thing are what they call can-trip if I am mistaken, cards that does something when they enter play or die, such as Harvest Golem and Loot Hoarder, also Shattered Sun Cleric. The moment your opponent has to use backstab and eviscerate on your Yeti is already an advantage to you.

Problem with the buzzard+UTH combo is that it can either wipe the boards (minion trade) OR hit face with it WHILE filling up their hand with more threats.

All that for a 2 card combo still looks pretty OP to me. Plus, even with UTH at 3-cost, with 7 crystals, you can still drop a wolf to get those hounds deal double damage.
