I agree, all year I was using AirPlay and wanted to buy a HDMI out cable for lightning thinking it would be the same as my 30 pin HDMI out for my iPad 3, then about a month ago I found out the hard way

I don't think we will see a reduction in lag on lightning because it's processing video in the converter itself, unless the way AirPlay works in compiling the video file before transfer can be sped up (A7?) it's always going to suck.

It's quite sad to think that the iPad 3, the bodge job iPad from apple is actually the best for HDMI out.

I don't know. The old 30pin hdmi (made for iPad 2) has performance issues with th iPad 3 as well(got it myself) but with th new 30pon hdmi it works, so maybe apple is able to update their lightning hdmi, at least to get rid of the lag. Or a7 can help out. But I didn't see one video or post from so,leone who tired it.I guess we are just screwed.

Hi guys! I click on every page in this thread and looks like you have here pretty impressive info on everything related. NICE

BUT i didn't find some list of games which support that "controls on iPhone and game on TV" feature like Real Racing 2

I'm new to Apple TV and like it a lot! Not a fan of cables so no hdmi for me. I tried couple of games and they are not that bad as you describing in this thread and also looks like when game have that extra feature to display game only on TV and on my iPhone only controls it runs MORE smoothly than normal mirroring.

SO did i miss list of games like this?

For now i tried couple of them but want more .)

Real Racing 2 - iPhone screen change to cool controller and runs nicely on ATV
Pilot's Path - wow this game is awesome (controls on iP screen and quality picture on ATV)
Dungeon Hunter 4 - on iP screen stays only controls and game on ATV and plays nice
Ducati Challenge - controls on iP, runs smoothly and ATV picture turns on after you start game ... until then only ducati logo - i say that this game have "FULL ATV compatibility" but i think there are some bugs on iOS7
Max Adventure - also controls on iP but buggy like hell on iOS7
Metal Storm: Online - COOL controls on iP and runs smoothly on ATV

i know about and will pick up soon:
    Modern Combat 3
    Modern Combat 4
    Motion Tenis
Little Uzu? - saw only iPad version
    Zombie Gunship
    Asphalt 6
    Asphalt 7
    Kung Fu Rabbit

Just a reminder i want to know about games that change iP to controller when connected to ATV

    My set up:
    iPhone 5, iOS 7.0.3
    Apple TV 3
    - recently bought new router
    - connected trough ethernet
    - newest firmware

other then feature that make my iP controller without picture i think that its A LOT about your router when it comes to performance, as i say i recently bought new one but soon i update it to Apple Airport Time capsule so i hope it will get even better

some of you that try airplay through Apple TV maybe can share what router they using? I think it wasn't mentioned

*sorry for my english, it's my third language .)

    Hey fellas!

I just found this tool called Reflector, for windows and mac, this tool turns your PC or mac into an actuall Apple TV! No kidding it works really well. Even with mirrored. I tried some games and there is almost no lag. The quality is not so good but it's the only lag free solution we will have (with lightning)

    My setup:
Lenovo u310 ultra book, wired with Ethernet
Connected with my iPad 3(which has crapy WLAN) with connect iffy running on the ultra book

So, the iPad air has MIMO and there sure are better network cards on the market.

So maybe with the iPad air and a better network card, the quality might even be better...

I used to own an Apple TV, and I remember that it was way more laggy compare to this tool, that's as back on ios 6...
Maybe apple upgraded their airplay framework on ios 7...? Because the guy above me said that it isn't that laggy, and he is on ios 7, as am I now

Would you mind, recording a video where we can see your iphone in front of your tv when playing games? So we can see the lag, or not.

I love my Apple TV but there does seem to be a bit of lag

Take Pinball Arcade for example, its not so great on Apple TV as i mirror the app but theres just a delay which is frustrating from when i press the ipad screen to whats shown on tv.

My router/super fast internet is right next to my TV downstairs. Hoping a new Apple TV might sort out this issue

As i say games which turns iPhone to only controller and picture is only on TV plays very well "without lag" (i don't know how to say that they are without lag)

Also some mirroring games are without lag but most of them don't but anyway i tried only couple of them. I have ATV only for short time so for now i have it on my extra monitor for MBA extending my desktop and trying to get most of it (since this is far from my router its little laggy but i have it here only for research) i already found some cool interesting programs. I don't know if this is thread for it but if you want i can share what i found.

For that video ... sure i can do that. For now i don't have anything to shoot it with but when my brother come home in a week or so he can record it with his phone then i post it here.

If you have that option try to connect your ATV with ethernet and try again :)

BTW i'm still searching for those games i was mentioning in my post :)

A question I can't seen to find an awnser for, my iPhone 5 using the hdmi out adapter shows footage on my tv as a 1080p image, is there a way to force that video output to be 720 or even SD resolution? it's not like iOS games actually render at 1080 and my tv is a native 720 set, so accepting 1080 and downscaling is a waste of iPhone processing time and the tv applying display lag from resizing it.

If not I guess it would be a jailbreak thing... so annoying.

1, most games use 720p native TV output (I assume you're referring to native output and not plain mirroring. The latter will always be 1080p on everything A5+ (and 720p on everything A4, assuming you do enable it after jailbreaking)), except for some SD-only Gameloft titles. There isn't a way of directly altering this (overriding the resolution), not even via jailbreaking. With jailbreaking, you can only opt for DisplayOut's mirroring (with truly selectable output res) but I in no way recommend it instead of either true mirroring or native output. That is, jailbreaking won't help you. (I recommend my complete tutorial of DisplayOut at TA's sister site, MacRumors: http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=1589992 It explains truly every little secret about the app.)

2, however, physically, both the 2nd gen 30-pin adapter and the Lightning one uses the maximal possible resolution output, that is, with 1080p monitors, 1080p, even when driven with even 480p input. (They upscale everything by default.)

3, I'm not sure whether they still emit 1080p when connected to a 720p-only monitor; that is, does the latter truly need to downsample. Does it tell you it's driven at 1080p?

Yeah that is what I thought with output. I did some tests between my capture card and tv, the telly will always show it as a 1080p signal however my capture card says the feed being sent to it is 1280x720p, I find that weird because the card can recieve 1080p I am sure, but it's defaulting to 720.

Interestingly I feel that there is a very slight lag reduction in 720, granted it's on a monitor and not my tv which may have a better refresh rate but i've not usually noticed lag difference when using my xbox 360 between both screens.

What I wanted to do is force the hdmi out video to 720 or less to see if rendering time helped with lag, being a smaller image overall, i'm 50% sure that it's slightly better when not rendering at 1080.

Can't say anything about games with built in video out methods like real racing and modern combat 4, they change res and all that themselves.

I've got an Ipad Mini Retina (so a7 clocked at 1.3 as opposed to the air which is 1.4).

I'm about to buy a lighting to HDMI adapter to specifically use with gaming but I've seen and read some concerns about lag.

Does anyone here play games with the above setup? How's the lag? Do you get used to it eventually?

And... Why IS there lag? It's a video out cable, technically it shouldn't have lag unless there's some processing going on to alter the signal in a significant way? Is it true video out, or cheating?

    Thanks!

  16. I don't believe you can force different resolutions.

The applestore and website only carry the newer versions. Buy from apple, clone hdmis are crap.

    What's up homie?

Yes, 30 pin hdmi is awesome.

So far, we have no reports from ipad air or mini retinas with the lightning hdmi. I assume if is the same performance as ipad 4 lightning, which is not too good. Some people say that higher processing power should help hdmi lightning. I am not so sure.

If anyone out there has an ipad air or ipad mini refina 2 with lightning HDMI, please report how it is. If you also have an ipad 4, please let us know if HDMI got better with the newer devices.

    Thank you all. Take care.

I wouldn't game from my iPad 4 via HDMI out to the TV. There is definitely lag there. Also frame rate is terrible.

  18. Unpossible iOS Console Reports

    -------

    Connector's Impressions on Unpossible

Unpossible is one of the best iOS Console Games out there with HDMI and a iOS 7 MFi Game Controller!!!

This is one heck of a game, kind of has a flair of the best of a Boost 2 motion game along with a fast action Twitch game like Super Hexagon. This has to be one of my favorite games of the year, and I am sure it will make it on most people's Game of the Year Lists. The gameplay is quite simple, manuever yourself by tilting, touch, or mfi controls, and try to not collide with any barriers. The polish on this game is just incredible, playing this in iOS Console mode with HDMI with an iOS 7 MFi Game Controller will just put you in a state of awe.

    Super Highly Recommended!

    Unpossible iOS HDMI Report

Definitely alot harder with HDMI due to the slight lag and a little lower framerates, but it is hella fun!!! Having the whole big screen TV is just awesome! The field of view is just incredible, actually this is one of the few advantages on HDMI, in that you can see farther in the depth of view. This is one of the biggest secrets in this game is looking way ahead to see what barriers will be coming up, so this is quite nice being able to see farther up.

Just awesome playing on a bigscreen TV, tilt works great with it. Touch and MFi are incredible too. This has to be one of the best iOS Console games out there. I know there are still people out there laughing at us ios consolers with a tech demo setup of HDMI and MFi, but heck, once new ipad pro or apple tv with full HDMI comes out, we will prove to the world that an iOS Console works. An ipad pro will be an awesome console and laptop replacement. Mark my words.

So with the current kinda cruddy ipad lightning HDMI, it has some slight lag and framerate issues, but it is definitely playeable. Definitely harder, but heck, that makes this game more challenging and refreshing for me. Now Simplicity is more a challenge, whereas before, I felt like I could play that mode forever.

Futile is good for me with HDMI, I scored 137 off of HDMI, I am scoring about 1/2 that with HDMI, which is perfect. Ultra, which I can score over 60 seconds easily without HDMI, I am scoring now about the same ratio 1/2 with HDMI. A challenge for sure, but heck of a lot of fun.

Gotta say, it is heck of alot of fun on HDMI!

Unpossible iOS 7 MFi Game Controller Report

Woah!!! The right analog stick works too for controls! Wow, oh wow! That is cool, you can control it left or right handed. Actually, I prefer to use the right stick, even though using the left analog stick is more standard, but this is awesome!

No in game menu support, but Button A will restart your game for you.

Shoulder buttons don't seem to do anything in the early levels.

Gameplay is simple, it is just rotate clockwise or counterclockwise. Basically with tilt controls, tilt right or left. With button controls, tap on either side of the screen.

Mfi play is simple too, use the left analog or dpad to move left or right (counterclockwise or clockwise). Both dpad and left analog feel different, but both are sweet. At first, I liked the dpad better cause it was easier to control and slower. But once I figured out that you can just move the analog slightly to move slower, wow the analog started to shine too!

Wow, talk about an awesome game for ios 7 mfi game controller support, here you go. So far one of my favorite mfi game controller games by far. The game has a Super Hexagon merged with Boost 2 flair.

Also discovered another Unpossible control set using both analog sticks! Since both analog sticks work, you can use both analog sticks, the left analog for left, the right analog for right. This is actually my favorite mfi control set, so much fun using dual analog controls for this game!

Wow! Unpossible just controls wonderfully with an ios 7 mfi game controller, and is much more fun than using either the tilt or touch controls.

    A total must have.

    Super Highly Recommended!

Did Apple improve the Lightning connector HDMI lag via a software update?

When I first got my iPhone 5 two years ago (iOS 6), I found the lag made pinball games (in particular) really annoying. I haven't played them on HDMI since, so I never got used to the problem.

But I just tried again (iOS 7) and the lag seems almost near zero. I tried both the iPhone 5 and an iPad Air, using Real Vampire Pinball, and there probably is a little latency, but barely noticeable. I definitely recall 2 years ago I had to learn to anticipate the ball and mentally time my flippers to compensate for the delay. The lag I'm seeing now is too tiny to call for such a strategy. I might not notice if I wasn't looking for it, whereas I know it used to be really blatant for certain things like pinball.

Did I miss some news on this front? I'm pretty pleased with what I'm seeing. (To be clear: I don't have new adapter hardware--this is the same old Lightning HDMI adapter. Nothing but software/firmware could have changed. Or my sanity?)

P.S. Where can I find the most scientific measurements of the Lightning HDMI lag? Has anyone tested in a scientific way? (I'm curious to compare the ms numbers to some desktop computer displays.)

I'm pretty sure I asked someone else to test it out or report on it lately and they said the lag and frame rate loss was really bad. I just assumed that this person had the most recent IOS update. He was using a device with the A7 chip, like my device (Ipad Mini Retina).

I'm still on the fence myself. I know they can likely improve it with software updates (as the adapter has its own chip that does some if not all of the processing) but based on the method used, zero lag is virtually impossible.

Would love to hear some concrete data on how many MS lag is actually there, like you said. I've searched and found nothing, though. I don't think many people are trying to use their ios devices as mini-consoles, which is what got me really stoked.

When I found out about the method they use (i.e. not true HDMI out) I was bummed; it doesn't seem like something Apple would do. It's like using a short-cut or workaround when other tablet types are offering true actual HDMI out.

You're making me want to buy a cable and try it, but it's a fairly expensive addition ($60) if I don't end up using it at all.

Edit - If my local store accepts returns on cables, I'll buy one and try it out. I have IOS 7.1.1 or whatever the recent update is, and I promise to try and take the best measurements of lag that I can and offer a good review.
