Interesting article on the lightning HDMI adapter itself: http://www.panic.com/blog/2013/03/the-lightning-digital-av-adapter-surprise/ -The adapter is converting the signal because lightning can't do raw hdmi -The maximum resolution is 1600x900 intead of the 1080p offered by the old 30 Pin connector -The HDMI adapter is composed of a SoC CPU with 256 MB of Ram and actually converts the vido by itself. The video is then streamed to the tv via Airplay.
Wowzers!!! Just got my icade core joystick. I am impressed, highly. It is much better than I expected, and that is coming from an owner of the Gameloft Duo Gamer Joystick. I really like the look and feel of the icade core, reminds me of the old joysticks in the arcades. Fits perfectly in your lap, and is lightweight, yet rugged, so really love it. So, now I got 3 joysticks for my new ipad hdmi tv setup - the icade core, Gameloft Duo Gamer, and my iphone 4 using the joypad app. Talk about a tech demo, this is awesome to have so many flavors. Just got through playing Tabletop racing and Danmuku 2 via hdmi tv, and the icade core rocks! The button mapping is perfect, and it controls just great. Gotta test out Blazing Star and Metal Slug next. Really looking forward to this. Attached is a screenshot of Tabletop Racing, you can see the icade core at the bottom. Wowzers!!!
Great find. I guess this means it's actually a fact that iPhone 4S can put out better graphics to the TV (true 1080p in Pilots Path for insance) than the iPad 4. It's interesting how they showed the artifacts created by this compression and stretching technique to mimic 1080p with a slightly lower resolution. **Prepares the defibrillator** Everyone stand back from Connector... CLEAR!
Yeah but Connector is still with an Ipad 3 so it's not the new lightning only adapter. Technically his adapter is full 1080p.
Which means, I have the BEST possible hdmi tv ever, because of ipad retina. No matter what Night says! Haha. Hey guys, starting to add some stuff to the first page of this thread, if anyone has anything they want me to add, if there are any errors, or if you wanna list here your favorite hdmi tv games, let me know. Gonna talk about my experiences with my 3 joysticks with hdmi now that I have an icade core, Gameloft Duo Gamer, and iphone 4 with joypad app, so hopefully it'll make interesting reading for you all. Wow, what a fun tech demo, plus I got one of my modded xboxes back from my sister, so finally got all mame stuff back again like old times. But man, my ipad console tech demo is so much funner!
Loving HDMI gaming, although i don't have the cable (I stream using an apple tv so there is a bit of lag). Cave shmups are quite easy to control without looking at the device. And ravensword 2 kicks ass in HDMI!
Welcome! This thread is open to all Appletv owners since basically they do the same thing. The sexy thing about Appletv is that it is completely wireless and has an attractive and easy to use interface. See the list on thr first page of airplay supported games, cause those play real well on both Appletv and hdmi. Here is a new shmup called Danmaku 2 with my new icade core controller. Talk about fun, wonder how icade plays on appletv, anyone with appletv play with icade?
Thanks connector! Yep i will be checking that 1st page out later. I'll be reinstalling Dead Space on my iPhone and see how it works out.
Great thread! I'm a bit confused though, does the iPad 2 output 720p or 1080p video via HDMI? I've seen 720p here but read articles of when the iPad 2 came out saying it could output 1080p... Anyway I've played Real Racing 2 and Chopper 2 via HDMI out and using an iPhone 4S as a remote and it worked rather well.
I think the newest hdmi adapter for ipad 2 is 1080p output. You can see if you play Pilot's Path, cause it will tell you the modes supported. Maybe someone with an ipad 2 can check. This topic is hard to research cause there is almost no data out there, and asking Applestore employees is totally useless. Sorry, I can't be more help since I don't have an ipad 2, but Nightc1 is reporting getting 1080p with his iphone 4s, so I am fairly sure that ipad 2 does broadcast out in 1080p even for mirrored games. As I stated before, 1080p is 1920x1080, 720p is 1280x720. Standard resolution modes on modern day tvs, even though most broadcasting is done in 1080i which is dramatically worse than blue ray 1080p movies. Ipad retina resolution is 2048x 1536 and iphone 4s resolution is 960x640. Ipad 2 is 1024x768. Ipad retina over twice better than the resolution of the ipad 2 which will factor into hdmi conversion. As you can see ipad retina resolution is better than 1080p. Both iphone 4s and ipad 2 resolution is worse than 720p, and have to be upscaled not downscaled. This can lead to an image that maybe closer to 720p for an ipad 2, but I still believe that the output coming out of the hdmi adapter is 1080p. But I am not positive, no one really seems to know.
For a game that puts out some other resolution options, there's no upscaling, it's actually coded in the game to generate the same exact 1080p images as the devices with the better display and output them to the other port. The screen resolution has nothing to do with the HDMI/AirPlay resolutions unless the game is in mirroring mode. In mirror mode, iPad2, Mini, & iPhone4S have the advantage of being lower resolution so no second image has to be processed by the graphics chip... it's pure 1:1. For an iPad3 game that uses the full retina display, a second lower resolution image is either generated through code or it has to be compressed before being sent to the HDMI cable. Granted that image will be higher resolution and technically better, but it comes at the cost of processing power which may be part of the extra lag showing in iPad3 images and feedback I've seen where people complain that frames are dropped and games can get choppy. It could be tv's too, but alas.. not enough hardware for me to do extensive testing. It's amazing to think though that iPad4/Pod5/Phone5 are limited because of the adapter. Still, that's only at the highest resolutions and I've not found many games at all that do 1080P. Heck on consoles most games are running 720P or even lower 640P (iPhone5 screen) resolution and are just stretching those graphics to the higher resolutions due to their own hardware limits. So, even with the compression done on iPhone5 images, I gotta be honest... getting a native 16:9 image for mirrored games would be heavenly for the games that take advantage of it. Next year, iPhone6 (or whatever version is out) will be cool.
Yeah, I realize what you are saying, and I was talking about mirrored games, not airplay hdmi games. But I think you are incorrect about mirroring in that the ipad 2 and iphones will still have to upscale to 1080p. I think what you are proposing is that since the resolution is worse than 1080p, then it will not need to be upscaled, and that the new ipads since the resolution is better than 1080p have to be downscaled; but if this was the case, there would be more borders. But regardless about the various upscaling or downscaling needed, I still stand by my comments that ipad retina hdmi looks better than iphone hdmi graphics wise. But the fine points of how they are upscaled and downscaled both by our idevices, and our tvs (cause I use 5 zoom modes), will vary. I don't see anything in anyone's screenshots thus far to think otherwise. And as you mentioned, in the article from Killercow, it seems unfortunately if the lightning connector is limited on hdmi for the iphone 5 and ipad 4. I really wonder if that means that the ipad 3 hdmi tv out will have the best resolution output for mirrored games. Really, I hope not. But kind of curious to know what this airplay standard is and how this will affect both airplay hdmi games and hdmi mirrored modes. Kinda might give me a reason to keep my ipad 3 when I get my ipad 5/6, if it does indeed look better on hdmi tv. Weird concept. Yeah, many of my games look far better than when I go to my friends and play on their ps3's resolution wise. While the framerates and such of course are way worse on my new ipad hdmi, the clarity is so shocking at times, everyone who comes over to my house is shocked that it is coming from my ipad. Screenshots from a crappy iphone 4 do this no justice. Glad you got to try Catch the Ark for free, try it everyone that reads this and has hdmi, it is a fun hdmi games, even with it's inapp flaws. Also, Super Mole Escape is free today, and if you have icade, and hdmi, you will love this! Pictured is this game with my icade core, with hdmi tv in the background. You can play with the ipad far away, and put the core on your lap. Really good times!
Icade core on sale for $25, check out about halfway down this thread. http://forums.toucharcade.com/showthread.php?t=96023&page=150 Try one, it is awesome!!! Almost as sexy as hdmi!
Another interesting article... http://appadvice.com/appnn/2013/03/arm-inside-system-on-chip-found-in-apples-lightning-digital-av-adapter Look at the comments, I put a link to our thread! Hehe. It is really interesting to see the insides of an hdmi connector. Wowzers, never realized it had so many chips. I thought most of the processing was done in the idevices, but wow, seeing the insides, is interesting. And interesting too that 30 pin hdmi maybe better than lightning hdmi. Kinda sad if it is true.
Oh man! $25 was a steal too! The icade core really is contructed really well, it really feels like an expensive joystick worth close to the original price of $99. But as a last resort buy it off of Amazon for $38, it is still is a great buy, and honestly, whenever I think of people that would most enjoy the icade core, my mind always goes to you. It really has been a shock to me in terms of how much I would enjoy my core, and how high tech it would actually seem. I will put up a post you probably read from the Phoenix thread, but the icade core has shocked me, all for the good. Can't recommend it highly enought, ESPECIALLY WITH HDMI, cause then the cable don't matter, and you got a joystick that is better than an xbox or ps3, cause it is the old school stick. Simply incredible. And you can use the icade to rest in your lap, both with or without your ipad. Responsiveness, it is not quite on par with an xbox, ps3, of Gameloft Duo Gamer Joystick, because it is using bluetooth keyboard commands, but most games, you will barely notice. It won't get high scores for you, but it is hella fun, and dang, I am so happy now to have 3 bluetooth joysticks - iphone 4 with joypad app, Gameloft Duo Gamer Joystick, and an Icade Core. I like the Icade Core the most though. Most games, and the stick feels so much better than an xbox controller. If you are an old school arcade player, it really feels so much like an arcade, in fact, I can carry it in my backpack with my ipad and Soundfreaq bluetooth speaker, and boom, people are just shocked how I can have a mobile arcade anywhere. And at home, boom, hook it up to hdmi tv, for a different feel. I will be using the next couple of days to talk about wireless joysticks for our hdmi tv systems, so enjoy, and hopefully, you all can experience the joy of having a full console system, no matter how anyone laughs at you and tells you that an idevice can't be a console. I have proved them wrong... ------- Reprint of post in Phoenix hd (free game) about using my icade core with one of the ships called Trinity which teleports... Quote: Originally Posted by Selachii Hey guys, cool fact: we just passed 1 million players on the Phoenix leaderboard! That's the ship Phoenix! OMG! Wowzers!!! I am shocked... I was wondering how you were going to do icade core support for the Trinity since it has teleports and slo mo. Thought Trinity would suck with the icade core cause I wouldn't use teleport and a button would be used for slo mo... Wow, I am shocked how good of a job you did! Absolutely shocked... Getting an icade was worth just experiencing this! Let me explain to the non icaders, you use the big stick to control the Trinity, if you RELEASE the stick, the ship goes into automatic slo mo. Since my ipad is close to me on my icade core, I can then touch any part of my ipad screen to teleport. May sound simple, but it is amazing. Never played a game with controls so well integrated that you play with a joystick and ipad touch controls at the same time. Of course you can't play on hdmi tv this way, but wow, it is refreshing to see this joint joystick/ipad touch controls run to such perfection. Never played like this before ever. It is amazing... Wow, only other time I got this amazing feeling was playing alpha zero with two hands on my ipad playing on hdmi tv. That made my ipad feel like a two handed touchscreen joystick. In Phoenix, with the Trinity, I feel like I am in a spaceships cockpit, joystick in one hand, using the other to teleport on a touchscreen. It is utterly fantastic and new. A hybrid joystick/touchscreen implementation done remarkedably fantastic with the slo mo concept. I am breathless, this really gives me hope that an ipad can really shine with new and innovative controls that not even a console can produce. Good job Selachii on the integration of the Trinity and the icade core. I am shocked that it came out so well. Can't believe no one mentioned it before, it is amazing. Now my favorite game when I am on the john...
Interesting Icade Core Modification Article http://forums.toucharcade.com/showthread.php?p=2718199&posted=1#post2718199 He replaced the handle, added softer button springs, added pinball buttons on the sides, and added an on/off power switch to easily switch to keyboard mode for typing. Great read. Scroll up this page to see what my unmodified icade core looks like.
That sucks. i've heard Thunderbolt has somewhat reduced audio capabilities as well. Here's the rub: Apple went to Thunderbolt mainly because the port takes less room inside the ios device's case. On the downside, there's no getting around the fact that the 30 pin input simply had more channels. It could do so much because it HAD 30 PINS!
Any idea on the best way to hook my devices up via HDMI? i use Airplay w/my Apple TV occasionally; as you can see from the photo, I don't have any HDMI ports near where I sit. I have 3 subwoofers and 10 speakers (I have channels split between multiple speakers; for example, the front left and right channels have a subwoofer, mid-range/tweeter cubes, and a mid-low range "presence" speaker each), so I sit pretty far back in my living room. Also, do any games stream 5.1-7.-1 Dolby or DTS?
Sorry if I've missed this but is there a list of games that work with an iPhone/iOS device as a remote controller? So far I've found "Real Racing 2" and "Chopper 2". Playing games with the iPad connected over HDMI is one thing but having a remote really takes the experience to another level IMHO.
