...alright that's too far in the other direction for me. Sounds like you don't trust yourself to watch ads in case you inadvertedly spend all of your money. I'm not frightened of advertising, I just like that games are (supposed to be) a break from the realities of life.
Ok folks party is over its enough already. Go home , relax, pull out your ipod and buy Retrogamebox. And yes its 99 cents with no ADs!!
Meh, I can think of similar examples from other popular developers. Halfbrick's 'NEWS' button in the bottom left of their releases, where the red alert button (same one as when you have a new voicemail) pops up whenever there's a new release or update or just periodic random plugs for their other titles! You actually have to interact with the ad to get the alert to go away! EDIT: Ever heard the expression, "a bird in the hand is worth two in the bush?" Just a sad fact that a company will run with the thought that if you've shelled out money to them before, you're more likely than others to do it again. Especially with how the App Store is basically a platform for microtransactions where impulse purchases have a major presence.
Yeah, I quite agree with you that games are supposed to be a break from the realities of life. While playing games, we 're immersed in a different world without the pressure and worries. However, ads are here and there. We've faced it in real life. Why we still have to face it in a virtual world where we can have a relax.
you're seriously telling me that the little pictures of birds and so forth that make up the adverts in Angry Birds stress you out? Come on.
Its called aesthetics. You can't compare iphone games with going to movies. At least compare them with other games. Some of the best iPhone devs take care to create an experience for their customers. Look at Spider, Plunderland, Aera for example. Everything in those games is designed to create a positive experience for us. When I play a good game I myself want to press on that "More games" button to check what else the devs have to offer. When ads are intrusive, i.e. appear unsolicited, that simply ruins the mood of the game, as many people have already stated. If you want a comparison - some people pay extra money for cable tv or tevo, or whatever its called to avoid having to sit through ads. Imagine their dismay if the ads start popping up here and there during the shows. They would say:"I paid money, why do I see ads?" Or another example: imagine you buy a DVD of a movie you really like and then have to sit through 3 or 4 ads that you can't fast forward through before you get to the main menu. I don't like watching movies on TV either as they get cut badly to fit the ads in. Anyway, everything that could have been said has been said already.
Lol, I'm not bothered by ads in Angry Birds at all. I just play the games each time and forget all other things. It' inevitable to have some ads in Angry Birds because it is now very famous and it's a good media for advertising.
I would agree with you if these ads forced you to watch a 30 second vidclip or something everytime you played the game, but they don't. They don't force you to do anything. They barely even force you to notice them. They are just an image sitting there for you to either touch or ignore. They don't interfere with the game in any meaningful way at all...
You know, It seems to me like a weak argument to say I payed not to see adds. Unless a description ever says explicitly that their game does not contain adds, you really have no technical right to say i payed to not see ads.
Some do. If you want to play Words with Friends for free you'll have to tap the screen then select "Skip" to get past the ad screen after every turn you make. As I said before, there are different ways to go about it, WWF was annoying enough to make me pay for the ad-free version, while Rovio's fit with the AB theme and manage to keep more or less out of sight. Some of the more intrusive ads would be better compared to browser popups, and we all know everyone hates those
I don't know of any paid games where description says "no ads". We are not debating legality of ads in court. Its more of an expectation as a result of interaction between devs and customers. Such expectation results in similar conversations and exchanges (sometimes more heated) regarding any paid game that has ads in it.
Since MidianGTX found the solution, I would have to agree with the fact that "not all is lost", however as a purist I want to only see the art in game that relates directly to that game. I believe that having paid for a game, even if it is only $1.19, I should be entitled to avoid having to see ads, or be able to turn them off in options like in Doodle Army, or have them confined to a folder titled "more stuff". Basically we are debating the level of our tolerance towards the matter, not the matter itself.
hehe interesting discussion.. well since rovios adds are for their own products/merchandise/fan services.. i can't see much wrong.. the attention span of most iOS users is very low.. and most usualy don't wander off into sub sub menues to get the newest "cool" offerings from rovio.. so their design choice to implement them into the normal flow of their games is pretty reasonable.. since all this is still around "stuff" for angry birds.. so if you want to have them in plush.. you can hit the ad and be right on your way.. i mean angry birds is so big.. offering merchandise is surely a huge opportunity for some real income.. look how lucas turned SW merchandise into billions.. chances are pretty soon rovio makes alot more money with the "stuff" than with the games.. the slippers do not cost a dollar.. neither do the plush toys .. and apple does not get a cut from thoose too.. but you guys made me open angry birds.. and wow.. it now has a gazillion of levels?! so many new level packs.. i only knew thoose from the initial release.. now there are like too many.. damn it
I'm referring only to Angry Birds in this discussion... (I would say though that anyone who expects an ad-free experience in a free game or app needs to give their head a shake...)
