Is this more of a traditional retro RPG? (i.e. early Ultimas, etc.) Or more of a simpler roguelike? Just getting a bit sick of the latter, but former would be welcome.

More traditional IMO. You lose your gold when you die but not your items. You retain xp and gear. The battles are turn based. You go to a simple grid map and can move about and fight. If you all three die then you respawn in town. Nice progression of skills when levelling. My mage is fun now he got an offensive spell.
If your party dies in the dungeon it takes no time to get back and pick up where you left off. You only have to re-fight the odd random encounter and not the main fights. It's nicely done with comfortable controls IMO.
All the enemies and items have an info button so you can read about them or see what effect they have. It's a really nicely made 8 bit RPG tribute with no bs social features / IAP / other shenanigans. I really like it and I hope it ends up getting a rare Gabrien seal of approval !

Lol. Well I hope you like it ! I've got a few quests under my belt and found one or two nice items and it has me unable to stop playing. I'm getting a few nice skills and the combat is getting more and more fun and with decent depth because of the variety of skills and items to use. Bear in mind that if your whole party dies you lose all your gold so sometimes it may pay to skedaddle back to town if your party gets weakened.

The screenshots remind me of the D&D "Gold Box" games. Are there indeed similarities?

Loving this game, but it needs just a few touches added to it. There's no item to revive a fallen party member? If you lose someone you need to get to a shrine to heal. Also not every town has a shrine to heal, in the upper part of the easy side I went to 2 towns in a row w no inn/shrine. Had to hoof it to one of the first towns. Basically don't die, just save often and replay.

THIS is what I'm talking about! I'm gonna call this the best RPG on the app store right now. After being tragically disappointed by "Ultima" this came along and gave me a streamlined mobile Ultima style experience. I haven't been able to stop playing it. Honestly guys, if you like old CRPGS this is a must buy!

Oh how I love my Oliphant !

Edit : having trouble in the Academy. Sir Rugnar is behind at levelling due to several untimely demise ! My Ranger is amazing aided with her precision accessory. My mage is most interesting with a wide variety of staffs and spells. I can't stop playing this. It's my GOTW for sure. When / if I manage to beat it I will be playing again to try some of the other character classes.

Left a 5 star review on the UK AppStore. I've been playing for hours now and I haven't even opened up half the world map yet.
