for me Hero Emblems is nowhere near to this game in awesomeness. imho. i can't put down this gem, really. like a drug. just perfect gameplay mechanics. only game i could remember in this genre that can take me away from real life for so long is the first Puzzle Quest. but this one is much better, really.
I still can't get past that stupid level 2 boar. I feel like I never have any good options. And without a way to heal other than potions, I'm a sitting duck. I don't know why this won't gel for me. Edit: Finally beat him. Starting to get it. Will see if I start to actually enjoy it.
I think the game that is comparable to this one is Dungeon Raid, one of the best game I've ever played.
Just got destroyed by the first boss and I'm really not getting the hype. I got destroyed many many MANY times in HE, but here it just feels like I'm always pushed into a corner with the only options often being wastes of a turn. Where is the strategy if your only move is shield when it will be ineffective?
Sometimes you have to burn moves. I'm not sure if the beginning is a great indication of the strategy that does show up fairly early into the game, so I understand your frustration. What, in particular, are you having issues with? I'm sure we can help. I feel there's quite a bit of strategy in the game. It's one of the things I've appreciated the most about it. I've had boss battles go on for 10 minutes or more. There's also a strategy FAQ from the menu screen, if you feel you might need it.
You're looking at it from a wrong point of view. It's not wasting a turn as much as investing in a future turn. On every turn the value of each tile type is different. You absolutely will have to burn swords or arrows sometimes in order to get more shields. It's a game of managing your resources so you have the right amount to spend on the turn you need them. When the attack is a few turns away you can burn shields if you feel you can take a direct hit to your HP, otherwise you want to consolidate shields. When the enemy is trying for break skills then forget about shields and go all out for swords.
I get how it all works. My issue with it is that sometimes the board can be all one color with just a few other tiles scattered around. And the main color on the board would be completely ineffective for that move. When the boss is taking almost no damage as is and hits like a truck, having to waste a move simply because I have no other choice just seems like poor design. I don't see how it's strategizing. Is there a way to build up powerful tiles (poison, three sword) like in HE or are those just random? Wasted moves feel like wasted moves here -- not part of some bigger strategy. I get that it might change later on, but I'm not really feeling compelled to play long enough to find out.
 The game gives you increasing amount of board control through skills and tiles, some are like "match all" which help clear the board very quickly. One skill is "change" which just gives you a new board for 5 mana without ending the turn. You also very soon get an ally who heals you every 3 turns. Other variety of tiles include 3x sword/arrow/mana, magic, poison, critical etc. If you're still not enjoying the game then you shouldn't push yourself to enjoy it or even to unravel the mystery of why we are enjoying it. There are way too many great games out this month alone to be fretting over one game that's not turning out to be to your tastes.
Definitely agree with sapphire's take. Have you obtained a pet yet? That will also go a long way in helping you feel more effective and it adds another layer of strategy. A lot of new tiles and buffs are in your future too.
First boss the gorilla? You might want to check out the strategy guide...http://www.picsoftstudios.com/guardiansword/strategy.html Ack...ever find when you multitask in the TA app you come back and your keyboard is invisible? Annoying... Anyway, don't be afraid to use potions, you will be able to buy them and you'll have a healing fairy before the next boss. level up to buy better gear if you are close to the next set before fighting s boss, keep some upgrade points free so you can adjust them defense is good to start with though... don't be afraid to use a gem because you will be able to buy them in game later It sounds like your defense isn't high enough for you if you are struggling to avoid taking damage. Poison that boss, stay alive and when you have the mana, use he power strike or hit with swords...sometimes you don't have enough tiles to break through the defense and you need to decide to just use one anyway so it frees room for the other,.kind of like poker in that way I guess. I loved hero emblems and am really digging this and I've seen you on the forums for some of the same games I have played...I'd say either this game doesn't click for you and you should move on, or if and when it does click, it will be something new for you. <shrug> interesting good luck with whatever feels right

I beat the gorilla using a potion. But still...not grabbing me. Maybe the game shouldn't take so long to get to the pets and whatever else you guys are raving about?
I voted for Guardian Sword... And trust me, I love Cally's Caves 3. But this game has really sucked me in! Great job developer!
