Here's another pic, with permission from Glenn from the GGroups: That picture has been taken for the yellow/blue 3D glasses. I've used them, and I must say, it looks amazing.
Game Impressions I love this game! I bought it on the strength of this thread and wasn't disappointed. The feeling of speed and scale is stunning. I enjoy replaying levels I've beaten just for that swooping flight sensation. Fixing a few niggles would make this game a total classic. In my priority order: 1) The menus are awkward, especially when you've completed all the levels. At that point, I want to go back and see in which levels I've not achieved best time or first place, and have another go. But to do that I've got to go to the scores menu, find a level I want to play, go back to the race or ghost-race menu, find the same level and then play it. It would be better to merge the race/ghost-race and score menus into a single menu that showed your score for each level and let you choose at that point whether you wanted to race or ghost-race on that level. 2) You can't collide with the other craft! That makes overtaking much less tactical that it should be. When you're trying to overtake another craft in some tight canyon or cliff-top path, you can just fly straight through them as if they weren't there at all. I'd like to be able to bump against other craft and if collisions are hard enough, for the craft to crash. (It's a shame you can't crash into trees either, but that has less of an effect on gameplay). 3) Crashing does not have enough of a penalty, especially on earlier levels. It's only on the last couple of levels that a crash stops any chance of winning the race. For realism's sake I'd expect a crash to end the race. I'd really like a "high difficulty" mode in which you lose the race when you crash. But even with those niggles, this game is my favourite iPhone title and I've persuaded several friends to buy it too. (How about networked multiplayer?).
For all you red/cyan 3D glasses users, here are some more pics! I'd say these show the 3D effect really well!
Nice pics WunDaii and Der-Kleine dredd, glad you like the game. The new version has updated menus. They don't do quite what you've asked for but I have combined the score and replay menus. This means you can browse the scores, touch the island to view the replay and then take over control from the replay at any point. Perfect for shaving time off your previous scores and will hopefully mean the Takeover feature gets used more as few people seemed to notice it in v1.0. It is there though in the "replay" menu. The crash penalty is very small, barely more than a second if you crash right next to the track but this is by design and and to help reduce frustration for people who have only just started playing. It's only really possible to finish the first few levels with more than a couple of crashes and the fastest times are only possible with clean runs so are rewarded.
I've had a couple of emails from people asking about the stereo 3d, getting glasses etc. I just wanted to make it perfectly clear that stereo 3d is just an option in this version of Ground Effect, so the game can be played as normal.
I agree that being able to collide with other aircrafts would be cool but of course that comes with a cost on the processing side. Ideally, some career path where you can buy / upgrade aircrafts, etc. Yeah I know - it takes lot of efforts and time. More sound effects / engine sound too would be neat.
Hopefully, not too much longer to wait Josh Thanks for your comments Pheebau - you'll be pleased to hear that your suggestions are already on the dev's "to do" list.
The only trouble I have, as I am sure many other people do as well, is actually finding places where you can get hold of 3D glasses! Any suggestions?
And that is why I took like 10 sheets of glasses the last time there was a 3D TV show promotion somewhere (they had a HUGE box of them at the store, I figured they'd come in handy someday...) Never did watch the show. If I had any spare time to do so I could have people SASE me for a pair... The only other ones I have are from comics (yay, Valiant Vision!) and a CD (Cult Files Vol. 2 came with glasses to see the 3D art in the booklet. Oh and I guess Tool's 10,000 Days has 3D glasses built into the cover as well...)
Um...the internet? Otherwise just wait for the next 3d movie to come out and nab a couple of extras. I think we have an extra pair from the time I took my son to see Madagascar 2.
I use my TrackMania United Spechial Edition 3D glasses with a verry fitting text printed on them... "Live your Dreams". Fits prefectly to the game (both games!)!
The grey ones from Movie theaters don't work because they require special screens and projectors. Ground Effect works with the colored 3D glasses that come with a lot of new DVDs and pretty much any colored 3D glasses you may have picked up in the past. Ground Effect supports all of these: Red/Cyan glasses as used by many movies including: Hannah Montana, Polar Express, Barbie, Shrek, Spy Kids 3D, Shark Boy and Lava Girl. These are also compatible with NASA’s Earth & Sun in 3D and the spectacular Mars 3D images sent back by the Spirit and Opportunity rovers currently exploring the planet Mars. Green/Magenta glasses (these work best and seem to be the new standard for 3D DVDs) as used by the new Monsters vs Aliens, Coraline, My Bloody Valentine in 3D and Journey to the Center of the Earth 3D. Yellow/Blue glasses I hadn't seen these until a month or so ago when they were used for a 3D season on Channel 4 in the UK. They were given away free in supermarkets. Red/Blue glasses If you think you have these they are probably red/cyan (cyan is blue+green) but if you do have red/blue the effect still works if you select red/cyan mode. Red/Green glasses use red/cyan as above. There are always many 3D glasses available very cheaply on ebay and just googling for "3d glasses" finds several online stores and even places offering to send you them for free! If possible, get the Green/magenta ones for the best experience.
Thanks for the clarification. Now I know everything I will ever need to know about 3d glasses. Guess I'll have to heed my own advice and hit the web.
Ground Effect has been chosen by one review site as one of the top 10 racing games of 2009! Cool! Here
yes me too. I am off on a mission to get me some glasses. Actually I might just blag some from Glenn. I have seen it, and it works really well. Much better than the video (I have seen both). Something is lost in the filming, encoding and playback. Unless the RBG values are exactly correct all the way through the picture gets modified and the effect does not work properly. So the _only_ way to appreciate this is if you actually buy Ground Effect and look for yourself
