Would be nice if the updated MAME iOS made it to the market as "Gridlee II" ;)

Ironic people like me do not jailbreak their devices but Apple locks out apps like this and wonders why people jailbreak. If Apple wants people to jailbreak less, be a little more open to apps in the market.

Apple is driving a self-fulfilled prophecy.

I love emulators but there's no way that Gridlee should be allowed on the App Store permanently. You seriously think this app should be allowed?

How many people won't buy ghost n goblins or capcom arcade, metal slug games, Gałaga, pacman games and many other licensed apps because they can play them for free on Gridlee?

Apple aren't always right but they are in this case. A lot of companies who sell apps on the App Store (eg Capcom) would be furious if gridlee was always on the app store

I agree developers wouldn't like it but I doubt they would lose many sales over it. The masses aren't downloading emulators, finding ROMs and figuring out how to make them work. The masses will want to just download a game from the App Store, press the icon and play. The people in this forum are not representative of the masses. At least that's my opinion.

Yep fair enough but I still think there's a fair few who would play these games in gridlee rather then buy then. In this thread there's been so many newbies asking where/how to add Roms. So many people wait for a game to be free rather than pay a tiny amount like 69p I'm sure they'll prefer to get them for free for this app

    Sure they don't:

1, average iOS customers / users aren't geeks. Not in the least - they prefer much more powerful / open platforms like (now, in 2013) Android. The target main audience of iPhones are women / girls and elderly people. Not really the people that would like to play with loading ROM's via a file explorer to any iDevice.

2, it's worth checking out the traffic in the local ZX Spectrum / C64 / etc. threads. VERY few people.

Also agreed. And, as I've pointed out above, native(ly) rewritten apps offer a LOT over emulated contents. While I do jailbreak and I have several emulators, I've still purchased all the Metal Slug games. The native versions are just better than the emulated ones.

I might be an exception, since have a 128gb iPad 4 loaded with apps and have purchased $800 of apps since owning the iPad 3. Also have Gridlee and roms for it. iPad 4 blows my Tegra 3 tablets away for MAME performance.

Yes, that is a lot of apps, but I do not drink much or blow money on other hobbies. Games are my main vice :)

Notice the word "main". According to some studies, about 70% of iPhone users are female. Also, Apple seems to cater to the technically challenged people the most - hence their "KISS" (Keep It Simple, Stupid!) approach and their trying to close all jailbreak vulnerabilities every way possible. The latter two might be great for people that aren't geeks but are also the best approach to make geeks switch to other and, now, superior, much more advanced platforms like Android where one doesn't need to wait for half a year to be able to run some basic functionality like changing the hue of the screen (see the JB-only f.lux).

I'm not about to get into an Android vs iOS argument here but can you point me to one of these studies? Almost everyone I know...man, woman, geek, professional, ditch digger, etc uses an iPhone. I agree iOS is in need of a makeover and the power users need to be given more control. But Android is far from perfect.

Menneisyys, I'd also appreciate links to those studies. Very intriguing. Thanks!

Guys, don't you know 81.5% of stats quoted when trying to validate a point are made up on the spot?

    ;)

Always love the ridiculous percentages that these android fanboys shit out.

Here's a stat for you. Despite having fewer cores and less RAM (which Android bois love harping about) the iPhone 5 outperformed the Android flagship device, GS3, in EVERY benchmark performance test. True, the results were close in some cases but the fact the iPhone did so without loading itself full of power chugging hardware says a LOT about the true power of Android. Needing all that hardware and still not beating iPhone says your OS is ridiculously inept.

And as far as this idiots marketing "research" goes, he should just shut up and go back to Android forums where the can all delude each other. There is no one demographic that is heavily skewed either to iPhone or android. They both attract about equal shares of the youth market and neither targets gender specifically. The funny thing is that Android is spread across more devices and therefor has a larger user base yet iPhone is close or beats it in every other category. This means more people who use iOS are actually using their phone AS A SMARTPHONE. Fewer Android adopters are power users, most of them still only use it as a feature-phone (dismisses that geek/power user argument).

See? I actually back my ranting up with research! Original commenter obviously likes to think of himself as a "geek" but as with The Tao "one who says they are a geek, is not a geek". Just an under informed fanboy.

    Meh,

I have an iPad 4 128gb, iPod 5 64gb, Excite 7.7, TF300 and a GS3. Yes, MAME with the A6 chip is way better than the chips in those devices, but I see value in all the devices for different things. Well, I "may" have one too many devices, but besides the point here.

iOS is less of a resource hog- that is for sure.

Do you by any chance, know what I'm doing wrong? All the roms say images are incorrect (or something like that). Thanks
