Wow, gone? Figured it would, but kinda surprised it lasted this long, almost seemed like Apple was going to let it stay on.
All the Midway games play great (very smooth) with the iPad 4 and a lot of them without speed hacks. I had the iPad 3 before trading it in and had the same issues you mentioned. That said, my iPod 5 seems to play smoother than the iPad 3 did for some games. Probably due to the lower res display.
In general I agree with you. Dot emu do a good work and I recommend to all of you to purchase their games. But don't be fooled, most of them only want your money. They have been taken your money again and again for the same game since 8 bit era, and now in your Ps3, android or ios device and so on. You have to pay three times for the same rom. Also, I don't understand why some major companies don't care about their customers and they have apps that don't support iOS 6.x yet, or landscape iPhone 5 ,or iPad. Examples: altered beast app, nanco app, 3d gng app, and a lot more... That's suck. In reality mame4ios is better app in a lot ways that apps made by some bigger companies, with better controls, different kinds of external or touch controls, local multiplayer, tv out, cheats, different skins, fully customisable, etc. Why can be better a free app made by a man in his free time, than an app made by a big company?. It is simple, it is done with love, by an arcade lover for you, arcade lovers. I have been supporting you for the last three years for free, I began coding mame4all on an iPhone 3G, purchasing new devices to keep mame4ios updated and paying an apple developer account when I don't develop professionally for iOS platform. I think griddle would have been good for all of you, because major companies would have been forced to offer you things than griddle don't offer, like iCloud support, achievements, global score board, network multiplayer, per game control or art customisation, etc if you want to sell you have to offer better product. And don't forget that you should own the ROM legally. Anyway, I keep supporting mame4ios for jail broken devices and I am currently finishing a new version which offer full touch layout control customisation inside app, 60hz sync option for smoother gameplay, auto fire with different speeds, hiscore saving support, fixes for save states on cave and some sega drivers and a lot more features.
I really appreciate the Gridlee release Seleuco! Yep. Like "Capcom Arcade Cabinet" has a lot of games they've re-released two to five times in the past. Probably will again with PS4/New Xbox. I think there's lingering (endless?) goodwill from gamers partly because a lot of games actually hold up pretty well. Sega can keep pushing out 16 bit Sonic because people still like them.
I wonder how big of an impact an emulator like Gridlee (MAME) really would have on the sales of an officially licensed release. Obviously there would be some impact but I always guessed it would be small. The folks posting in this thread are probably a bit more techy than your average user I would guess and of course would use something like Gridlee. However, most folks aren't that way. They want to download the game and play and if it's more complicated than that they won't learn how to do it. They won't go to the trouble of locating working ROMs from the right set and figuring out how to sideload them. When Gridlee first came out I texted about five or so of my real life friends and family and told them to download it immediately. I let them know they could play the classic arcades with it. I immediately started getting replies that they had downloaded but couldn't play anything but some game with a bouncing ball. I explained to them what an emulator was and most did not even understand what I was talking about. So I downloaded iFunBox and e-mailed it to them. I e-mailed them about 30 ROMs of great classic games. I then shot a video of how to install the ROMs into Gridlee and play them. I sent them all the video. Got a lot of "Thanks, that's awesome!" replies. To this day not a single one of them have yet to load a single ROM into Gridlee. They won't go to the trouble. But if Donkey Kong appeared in the AppStore for $0.99 tomorrow they'd download and play it immediately. I think these people represent the vast majority of users. They are computer literate enough to work (one of them is an Excel wiz private equity guy), send e-mail, surf the net, etc. But if even one little thing goes wrong (can't print, something's crashing, can't conncect to their wireless network, etc.) they immediately call me or someone else who they consider to be techy. I'm totally pulling this number out of my butt, but I think that's 90% of the people out there so the other 10% will use Gridlee and not buy the official licensed app. The other 90% won't learn to use Gridlee but if they like the game enough will buy the official release. That's why I've always guessed the impact of something like MAME would be small. But then again, I'm totally guessing and could be completely wrong (and it wouldn't be the first time.)
Agreed. It's worth checking out how many people are posting in the Spectaculator / C64 / iDOS etc. threads here. (Not many. Sometimes noone posts there for months.) And add to that that (decent) rewrites ARE purchased by people otherwise owning the emulator. For example, while I am able to play it under emulators too, I've purchased all episodes of the native Metal Slug for the higher speed, great intro graphics, full iPad support and the like. That is, it's in no way true "anyone that uses an emulator never purchase the 'real' rewrite".
Let me disagree. Anyone seriously into these four (1, 2, 3, X) games would have purchased the rewrite because of the following: - GC integration (VERY important for high scores) - full iPad support & hi-res pre-game artwork - much(!) less battery-taxing than a generic emulator - can be downloaded instantly and play, no need to manually copy ROM files, doesn't even need a desktop to play - think of the convenience factor - etc. I've purchased all of them too - can even paste the iTunes purchase receipts in this thread if you don't believe me
Have to agree with jtfields above. Everyone I've told about iMame and Gridlee love Defender et al but just can't be bothered with the faff and end up playing it on mine. Very good post sir.
Got my iCade Core in today. So far so good. Few button mapping issues. Some problems with the joystick on 2-way and 4-way games as expected. Caused a little frustration with the 7 yr old daughter on Donkey Kong and Ms. Pac Man. Son was killing it though on Aliens vs Predators once he figured out the mapping. Definitely can see why some would opt to upgrade the controls.
Of course you are correct, many that fall into my imaginary 10% will still buy the official release. I've bought a couple myself. I prefer emulated games because the game is exactly the way I remember it. Sometimes with rewrites the visuals of the games are the same but the gameplay differs (for example, Pac Man may look the same but the old patterns you used in the 80's don't work - damn, I'm dating myself.) I'm okay with it if it's a "reboot" though (Space Invaders Infinity was awesome.)
I got a mobile steelseries free gamepad. And it works great with gridlee. Only i wonder, can i somewhere save the button settings for each game? So when i start up gridlee, and the game, i dont have to set the buttons the way i like each time i startup gridlee.
MAME4iOS 1.4 released MAME4iOS 1.4 released. There is a build for jailbroken and non-jailbroken devices. On non-jailbroken devices you must resign the app bundle with your own Apple developer certificate. Changelog: Added in app touch layout customization. Added hiscores saving (MKChamp patch). Added switch to force 60Hz video for smoother gameplay in some games (use with caution since could broke other games like cave ones). Added autofire with different speeds. Added threaded video and thread priority switches. Fixed some anonymous timers on sega and cave drivers to fix save states problems (AWJ patch). Fixed 2nd controller mapping issues. Fixed simultaneous analog and digital input on external controllers. Added support for newer Wiimotes (also removed BTstack dependency) you can download at: https://code.google.com/p/imame4all/
Oh really?!? Do you do any coding yourself? Did you help with the development or porting of this? If not then you have no reason to complain. You have much more than you deserve and don't seem to be showing much appreciation for the hard work and effort he has out into this. If you need the 1.4 update then you have two choices, pick one.
Because there is alot of hard work (unpaid) that's often put into this. A simple "thanks" would be a nice gesture. Meanwhile great list of features thanks Seleuco! Strange how quickly the GBA emu got pulled in comparison to Gridlee. I wonder how much of it had to do with product and new OS launches at the time. It just seemed like that Apple didn't have it's finger on the pulse.
Gridlee was a great surprise to many of us the other Xmas, for people who dont jailbreak their devices it was amazing being able to download Gridlee (FOR FREE!) and add so many great games to it. A dream I dont expect any updates (Plus Apple took it down from the app store) and it works very well. As the app was basically a MAME emulator Apple wont let them stay on the app store (it did stay there a fair while) and the apps been taken away so i cant see how anyone could update anyway. I'm grateful for what i've got, an amazing emulator on my non-jailbroken phone for free.
