    Review on TA:
    IControlPad

This one looks amazing, however, only some of the buttons are usable if you aren't jailbroken.
On an iPhone that isn't, it uses iCade Bluetooth implementation, and supports all games compatible with iCade.

If you're jailbroken however, it uses another kind of connection system, that makes it immensely useful. Then you can use the analog sticks and the shoulder buttons, which aren't available if you're not jailbroken, due to Apple's restrictions on Bluetooth connectivity.

Also, it's compatible with most devices under the sun, PC's included.

It's explained much better than I can in the review.

Just a little friendly competition. Next up is strikers 1945 plus. It's prolly my favorite shooter along side aero fighters 2 & 3. I would post gigawing but I'm not sure I can fit the score in this thread without breaking the page width, haha!

    Ha!
Are you using onscreen controls or an external controller?

I'm up for playing a bit of Strikers 1945 Plus. Haven't done much more than sample the gameplay in that one yet, but it's a fun shooter. I can see I won't be beating your scores on Shmups anytime soon, but I love a good competition nevertheless. :)

For the uninitiated Aero Fighters 2 & 3 is also known as Sonic Wings 2 & 3, and the Roms are named after that, although in Mame they're named Aero Fighters.

    Go figure.

There's also a Sonic Wings 1 that I haven't played yet, but that one is actually called Sonic Wings in Mame too.

It turns out that I've only tried Strikers 1945 III which run like a dog in Mame.

Strikers 1945 Plus is absolutely awesome!
Have only played 15 minutes or so, and my score ain't high, around 102.000, but it's great fun.

Dang! I'd promised myself I would stick to Sonic Wings II until I got better at the game, and not go from one game to the other and not see much of each.

Man, I'm spoiled with Mame for iOS. :D

Lol I know what you mean. I have been playing the hell out of it since I got the right romset the other day. I've been going through and trying to find which cave, psyiko and misc other shooters I can find that run at full speed. I found gunbird and 1941 also work good but many others do not. But the best ones seem to all work just fine. I actually have a strikers 1945 jamma board I bought about 6 years ago. I had a candy cab back then but it required a vertical oriented screen so I never got to play it through. So I stuck with 1945 plus on neo geo instead and got pretty good at that game at one point in time. I think I've been to the fourth level on 1up. I've been trying to 1up neo geo games forever. The closest I got was with metal slug 1. I got to the final boss on 1up but then died and even needed two additional credits to beat him. But beating it on three credits isn't too bad. I was really hoping to join the 1up club on that run though. All well, maybe someday.

Ahh, well, it becomes more and more obvious that I'm a simple amateur in comparison. Why on earth I decided to post my scores here is beyond me now.. :D

    But now that I've started:

Oh no you are doing just fine. I'm actually a little embarrassed by my scores as I used to own the hardware, ha. I used to start my day by playing either metal slug, aero fighters or strikers 1945 plus. At one time I had over 100 neo geo mvs carts in my collection. I ended up selling most of them, think I still have like 6 or 7 games left. Another couple games that are actually really fun on the neo geo are neoturfmasters (golf), league bowling, wind jammers, and baseball stars 2. Of course the first two samurai shodowns are my favorite fighting games of all time. I just loved the neo geo. I couldn't afford the home console games so I collected the mvs versions instead. A mint condition metal slug 1 home version cart to this day can fetch over $30,000! Anyhow most of my childhood was spent in the local arcades and the best machines were always the neo geo's. I even had some extremely rare mvs carts at one point in time of unreleased or very limited circulation games. I built a consolized 2 slot neo geo mvs system several years back. The thing was unbelievable. I ended up putting it on eBay and got $800 for it after getting a couple candy cabs. Anyhow with so much neo geo history I feel like a newb again posting my scores, ha.

I'm using my modified icade core. I swapped out the joystick and buttons for Sanwa parts. I need to get the 8 way restrictor plate off my other icade unit and put it on this unit instead, maybe ill do that tomorrow. So I do have somewhat of an advantage. It was only $40 for the icade core, the other parts I had laying around.

My family didn't have the money to buy any home arcade systems when I was a kid, so all I had was my pocket money and the local arcades. I suspect I'm somewhat a senior on this forum, as I can remember when the first Asteroid Cabinet arrived in my area, likewise the Defender Cabinet.
Ahh, those were the days, getting my behind thoroughly kicked at Defender and Zaxxon (Dont think I ever made it through the first stage in Zaxxon).

Kids nowadays complaining about the prices on games, on the AppStore or elsewhere should have been alive when every time you wanted to play, you had to put money in the coin slot.. :)

As an adult I've been exclusively a PC gamer until iOS arrived, and I've rediscovered Shmups, to the extend where I even bought an XBox 360 just for the great Shmups available on the platform.
    Well, that, and Skyrim.. :D

Now, my latest score, this time using my iCade on Sonic Wings 2/Aero Fighters 2:

    Ahh, that look great!
Are the iCade controls very inferior in comparison?

I had the same question about controllers, thanks for the recommendations!

Do you know if this controller would also work with Gridlee on the iPad?

Well the stock joystick is really stiff. It looks like a cheap knockoff Sanwa joystick so it's not really that bad but I'd rather have the jlf series Sanwa stick personally. The buttons are really loud, they use American style buttons which don't allow for rapid button pressing. Once you swap those out for silent Sanwas it's much easier to play games that require button mashing, such as shooters and shmups. The Sanwa buttons are about $3-5/ea depending on where you buy them. The joystick is $25-30. And the 8 way restrictor plate is about $10. All in all it cost me about $85 to build. The buttons require some dremeling for the Sanwa buttons to fit and the joystick requires some soldering. The buttons are attached with terminal connectors so they don't need any soldering. I was thinking of buying some parts in bulk and offering them for sale but I'd have to charge about 120 a pop in order to make it worth my while. Not sure I can get many of them sold at that price.

You're right, the iCade is very loud when playing, the buttons are very noisy when playing, especially with rapid mashing.
I would love a setup like yours, however, I have no skills at all in building anything like that, in fact, I'm usually very adept at botching most DYI attempts.. :D

I wouldn't dare poking at the innards of my iCade.
I could look on YouTube for guides perhaps, but I think it's safer if I stay away...

Inferior? Depends. By most people's standards they are probably fine. But to an arcade snob like myself they aren't optimal without some modification. Sanwa parts make it ideal in every way possible. I do wish the start and coin buttons were smaller buttons on the top I also wish the layout were different. A 9 button layout IMO would have been perfect. Two buttons on top for coin and start above the 7 fire buttons. Four buttons across the top row and three across the bottom row. The top four buttons would be red, blue, green and yellow as per the standard neo geo layout and the bottom three for the typical street fighter six button layout to be used in conjunction with the last three on the top row. I had made this type of configuration on my candy cab control panels and it was ideal for every game you could throw at it in mame. Of course don't tell anyone I had gutted one cab and used it as a mame setup, I could be burned at the stake if anyone found out about that, ha!

Nice! Do you prefer the iCade or iCade Core?

I have an old mat catz fightstick for 360 that I don't use anymore. It currently has a Sanwa JLF-TP-8YT-SK Joystick with a Seimitsu Spring and a Sanwa GT-Y Octagonal Restrictor Gate. The buttons are Sanwa OBSF 30mm Pushbutton. I'm thinking of removing the joystick and buttons and putting it on the iCade. How difficult is it?
