This still hasn't been pulled. Surely they know by now that it has a fully functional MAME underneath?

I couldn't find a working Ninja Gaiden for this romset BUT Shadow Warriors (which I believe is the same exact game just what it was called in Europe) does work.

I tried a couple days ago and it wouldn't load up. I don't think any atomiswave games work on this version of mame. There really wasn't that many great atomiswave games that could be played without the use of the guns (shotgun and hand gun) so its not a big loss IMO.

I'm not complaining. I can see how this app got by the folks at apple though. When you first install the game the mame folders and zip file for gridlee do not exist. Once you launch the application the mame folders are created and grid lee.zip gets inserted into the roms folder. Pretty tricky, but effective.

For those who are waiting for other emulators to make it to the app store in a similar fashion, you can quit waiting. It won't happen. The only reason this app made it is because the game grid lee was released as public domain for non-commercial use. The copyright holder has given up their rights to the intellectual property. That simply won't happen with the other companies including nintendo, sega, sony, microsoft, etc. Many of these companies are still releasing games on iOS and charging top dollar for them. IE: Sonic the Hedgehog. The only reason mame has popped up is because many of the companies that made the games have long gone out of business and the creation and maintaining of mame is done strickly out of the passion of a few select programmers. Emulators that come out of android are typically of a commercial venture and apple simply won't allow that for liability purposes.

Anyone else having problems with Asteroids left and right not working? It works fine on the old version of iMame but for some reason this one (with the update rom) does not allow me to turn the ship. I tried messing with the key mappings but no luck so far.

Just in case anyone's not aware: the artwork folder is actually working in Gridlee!

If you download the artwork pack for Mame .139 and place the .zip file under the artwork folder, it will place artwork on either side of the game (usually this is black). The artwork will show either bezel, marquees, overlays, or other artwork, depending on what is contained in the zip file.

    example: http://mrdo.mameworld.info/mame_artwork/1941.png

    Enjoy.

does the artwork shrink the play area? it looks cool but i'd rather have the games fill the whole screen

I don't think it would be useful when playing fullscreen with an icade as they tend to fill the entire screen unless you play out of orientation (i.e. vertical game in horizontal orientation, and vice versa).

MvC1 runs flawlessly. MvC2 doesnt run at all.. and theres an app for it that is a close port of the home versions so why would you waste it on the rom? Some feel the app isnt that good but i find it works well enough. You have friggin MvC3 56 character roster on your friggin phone! and with modes. Naomi board hardware isnt really emulated very well on this version of mame.

Try pressing coin and start at the same time. Go down to the analog controls and there you will find sensitivity controls. It worked for me on Star Wars (which is still hard to play) and Tempest. You can also reverse the direction. What I haven't quite figured out is operating the arm to shoot while moving into the cone for Tron. May just need more buttons...

True, it does shrink the screen. You can disable the views by pressing Option+Start, then going into Video Options, on the top, set the display to Standard instead of Instruction Card.

Couldn't someone use a homebrewed ROM and utilize the same route as Gridlee? As long as there are no copyright laws violated, it could be approved under the same premise. GENS and SNES can run easily on the iOS platform as seen in the jailbreak world (despite a reported untethered jailbreak coming this Sunday, I think I'll keep my phone stock as I am learning to live without SBSettings). That being said, you are right in that the parent company to these console systems would petition to have such apps removed.

I have and will continue to purchase a bit of nostalgia if done right. Some of these companies try to update the experience and I just want the original version adopted for the iOS. It would be really nice if Nintendo would utilize the iOS for some of their older games (Game and Watch, NES, SNES). They won't as long as they view Apple as a threat rather than a source of revenue. If their hardware division fails, maybe they would release some iOS titles like Sega did.

My apologies for misunderstanding you. I thought you meant that MvC2 couldn't be played on a phone period.

Anyways, the ROM is there for it, so I'd imagine a jail broken iPhone could probably run a version of it.

How bad is the MvC2 port on the AppStore? It can't be that bad, can it?

Believe it or not some Game & Watch apps did appear a few years ago - Fire, Parachute, Octupus and Chef. I was wondering why they got pulled, luckily I kept them so I have them backed up everywhere.

Homebrewed game or not, I suspect emulating Nintendo hardware would be an infringement.

The game is ported well, its the control that is a bit on the rough side. I am a diehard fan but not to the point of not acknowledging obvious flaws in the games port. The game is great overall and is entirely playable, its just alittle harder to get used to and takes a bit more of a learning curve to be able to do supers with how the game controls. I just think its a marvel in itself that we have a port of MvC2 on our iDevices to begin with.
