Tips to help performance: use lower quality sound or switch it off. Disable stick and buttons animations and disable smooth scaling also.

You must have set your coin button to B as well. Those are all the SFX that play when adding a coin. :)

Is there a certain bios I need for Namco games (Dig Dug, Pacman, etc.)?

No BIOS needed for those games. I haven't tried Dig Dug. Pac Man works. I used the Puckman rom set. The ghost names are in Japanese but the rest of the game is in English.

If anyone else gets a full US version working please post the name of the rom set here.

Yes, but even with the latest apple hardware most are unplayable. Even after turning most things off.

Now enjoying Captain Commando and Strider. Good stuff! Granted, Mame is mostly a nostalgia machine - we have plenty of high quality games available in the App Store including such excellent ports as Sonic CD - but it is fun to tinker with as well as to revisit some of the games of my youth.

Something helpful I've learned: Some roms are based upon a parent file meaning that if you don't have the parent it won't work. In many instances, if one rom doesn't work, you may have to go back and obtain all of the associated files until you figure out which one it is. I have found it useful to simply include all of them - you can hide clones via the settings menu.

I haven't figured out the bios yet. I included the playch10 in my rom folder but still can't play smb. Specific instructions would be helpful. As I understand it we can publically discuss technical matters but not where to obtain roms. I have no trouble with the latter, but could use some technical assistance with the playchoice and neo geo bios. Are these specific to the mame version, e.g. do we need bios specific to .139u1?

With roms, what you are saying is correct. Sometimes you do need all location roms, that or the rom you have is either broken (not complete, BAD DUMP) or not working for the version of mame you have. With regards to BIOS, it's just a matter of trial and error until you find a working one, it does work however as I have neogeo working flawlessly. They are out there!

For PlayersChoice10 games, can someone recommend some good settings for the game input to make the controls more like the game? Like what to put in for the A button and for the B button in landscape mode? I tried to just put B as A and the X button as B to make it more like NES controls but it made things worse. Would come in really handy to have the proper control layout for playing Punch out. Thanks!

Irony is I could have played NES, SNES, Genesis, game boy advance and game boy advance/color games on my 7 year old Nokia N96.Heck there was even free MAME emulator for n-gage if someone remembers that old quasi-console-phone.
And now, several years later, when hardware in modern devices is so powerful that it could emulate much, much more "modern consoles" , I'm stuck with lurking and hoping some good soul would release emulator hidden under pretense of some game and hope for the best.
I say no more.We want emulators available in Apple store ( at least super GNES  ).No more Apple embargo on being able to play our childhood games. No more Apple closed ecosystem oppression like we are endangered or über species.Revolution !!!

P.S. : if you managed to read until now, or just skipped it all, just so you know, you must take into account this was written after hangover early in the morning, and it should be viewed as a satire more than serious text. And sorry for off topic.

Coming out of lurk mode to answer a common question. The reason for most of the troubles has more to do with what is inside the zip files than anything else. Take the Playchoice example here. If you were to open the zip of a working and compare it against a non-working version, you would see missing files. Those files are the "parent" - built in to the individual zips rather than stand alone.

Since I am new, I won't dive into the actual filenames, but dig for 139u1 specific zips which normally would require a supporting bios zip, and you will see what I mean. Cryptic, yes, but you'll be happier figuring this out on your own. And yes, once you figure out what files are missing, you should try adding them to a similar non-working version.
