That's a great question. I don't usually write a ton of imps on new games, however this one compelled me to write up several paragraphs on this threads first pg. It's that....fun and well done.
I'd say this is one of the better brick breakers I've played. The art totally gives me a "Smash Hit" vibe, like someone else mentioned already. There are lots of varied and really unique power ups, and the way stages change is really cool. For example, you start with one paddle (or whatever you want to call it) at the bottom, like most brick breakers, but then on certain levels you control two. One on the top and one on the bottom. There are also these pillar looking things that drop blocks in mid-round and move around to different places. There's a story mode where you can continue where you left off if you quit the game after a round. That's a really nice touch. You can also continue from any completed level if you die, but it will deduct 20,000 points from your score. So basically, to rank well on the leaderboard you have to make it as far as you can with your set amount of lives. This is definitely a steal for a dollar, especially for brick breaker freaks
Nice review akd^^^ I'm glad this game is getting some attention. I feel it got overshadowed by other releases/soft-launches this week, but I feel this one has lots of potential and staying power.
Thanks Rich! I'm not seeing you on the leaderboard. What gives? A few of my other GC friends are on there so it must be working... Roger-NL is rockin' 5th place WW out of 6,527 players. Nice job man!
I'll pick this up in a few hours; I think it's been a while since I played a really good Brick Breaker. That was Hyper Breaker Turbo. And yeah, that sounds like a great effort by our Roger, nice one! I'll see you guys on the boards (probably).
I hope you decide to give it a try. Let me tell you, I really like HBT, but after just spending about 45 more minutes with this, I'm amazed. The level variations and physics are incredible! Things are changing up constantly. Polarity shifts, vortexes that teleport your ball, pinball bumper walls, mirror walls, crazy awesome! This blows HBT out of the water. Got a chance to turn the sound up too. The music is ambient and fits perfectly with the game. I don't know if I'm the only one, but I had been playing this on my mini retina in portrait orientation the whole time. The ball would go off the screen and I had to actually move the paddle over in order to see the whole "map". Well, I paused the game and was shuffling around and accidentally discovered there was landscape as well. It's so much better now! Another thing I discovered was in the pause menu you can choose between 4 different graphics quality settings. Mine was on the 3rd by default, but after switching it to the 2nd (lower quality) the game played very smoothly. And I could hardly notice a difference in the look of it. Hmm, that IS weird... I hope to see the both of you on there soon!
Hey Paul! Now were getting some action in here! Whatever this "Trixibrix" is, drop it and play Grey Cubes Btw - HAPPY HALLOWEEN EVERYONE!!! #####
Same back at ya Btw, I do have a small score on GC right now, but it's not my actual high-score. When I start Grey Cubes it always starts me out where I last left off/ran out of balls so it doesn't seem to submit my high score. I'm going to uninstall/reinstall and start over. Also, that's a great find about landscape! I had no idea
I spent my Halloweeen! evening watching Snowpiercer, which was thoroughly satisfying. Hope you had a kickin' eve AKD! I will grab Grey Cubes tomorrow and get with everyone's game groove.
The last brick breaker I really enjoyed was on my Nokia brick phone. That was probably 15 years ago. I have grabbed a few iOS iterations, only to be disappointed. It seems like iPad + Brick Breakers would be a great match. I missed the $1 intro sale. Guess I'll grab it at $2 before it doubles again. Wait... Before I jump in. Can someone explain that magnet button?
Bravo bravo bravo devs. Amazingly fun game. Love the graphic style. Arkanoid is no longer the best breakout game out there. Grey cubes is. 1 buck? I'd pay 10 for this. I ask one thing. More levels. And more levels. Oh we'll. maybe one more thing. Multiplayer. You know like head to head split screen where power ups you collect directly affect the other players screen. That's two things I guess. But head to head every one has to admit would be epic. But thanks for what we have. It's already approaching epic status.
I'm not sure how it charges up, but when it does, you press it and your ball seeks out bricks for a short period of time. It's kinda hard to tell when it's charged up and ready to go though.
First imps are very high I absolutely love that you can play the game in portrait and landscape, no matter which way you happen to be holding your iPad. This feature is underrated but very appreciated. The mechanics feel great. The physics feel natural. The graphics look nice. The sounds are pleasant. Deeper imps after playing 10 levels or so.
Very polished game, I'm really enjoying it so far (level 40/60, 5th in leaderboard atm), I gave it 5 stars review on the AppStore, highly recommended! EDIT: yeah, so I'm 3rd now in leaderboard and stage 45/60 in-game, I just love this game. Brings me to old-school arcade gaming after school when I was a kid and had ZX Spectrum with cassette drive and Arkanoid was more popular then Space Invaders
Game Impressions The game is pretty okay (great sound) but there are some problems with the framerate here on iPad Air 2. Could be smoother. When I switch down one point at the graphics quality option then it's better but the iPad Air 2 should be fast enough to provide the best graphics quality.
Wow. This is a clear case of sound design helping push a game from a 4/5 to a 5/5 experience. If anyone is playing this game with the sound turned down or off, or playing it with their own music in the background, I urge them to reconsider. Try this in a dark room, with a good pair of headphones. The atmosphere created with the superb sound design is sincerely incredible. Excellent job in the sound department
