I thought this was all over the internet by now, but clearly not, so here goes... First of all, apologies once again to all those affected. There is clearly some sort of non-backwards-compatibility thing going on with iPad 2 as the game runs fine on iPad 1 and we're not even doing anything bizarre with the hardware. We had reports that 4.3.2 fixes the issue and indeed it must do, at least for most, given all the backpats I've gotten privately. I was even more confident in this firmware fix being "it" for everybody as it's not just great little war game being affected. I read somewhere that even the facetime app didn't work for some people, for example. Obviously we haven't got an iPad 2 yet else we would've fixed this long ago anyway. We just cannot buy them in the shops down here and have had to take the extreme measure of importing one directly from Apple in the states rather than just keep hoping for the best that more will show up locally. It's meant to arrive on thursday and when it does we won't be going home until we find a fix/workaround. The update for this will at least have some nice new features in by way of apology. I'm 99% sure that this particular problem is not of our own making, yet it's caused no end of damage to our credibility and doubtless sales figures present and future. I can assure you I'm more pissed about this debacle than anyone else rightly is. Try a net search for "ipad 2 freeze" - it ain't just us.
Oh please... ..Don't try to pin this on Americans. The whole human race is full of idiots no matter where you go. They are just idiots with more sophisticated accents. Anyway. I would complain about paying for extra content if this game was short on content, or if it was nearly impossible to progress in the game without IAPs. This is certainly not the case here. GLWG is really, really fun. Excellent work devs, I really enjoy this game and will purchase expansions as they become available.
It's been mulled over a few times. We plan to add achievements in the game, and I suppose hooking that up to gamecenter wouldn't be too hard, but does anyone bother looking up other people's achievements? I know I don't. Leaderboards? The top 10,000 people will all have the same score for a given map/mission. We talked about adding tiny numbers for cash remaining, number of units under a threshold etc to try and make more varied scores, but that's not really the point of how games like this are meant to be played. The elephant in the room is using gamecenter to initiate an async multiplayer game. This one is definitely planned but its a long way off - server-side stuff is complicated and expensive to do right, and we're not experts at it to begin with. So I guess at this point the answer is "yes" as long as someone can give us good suggestions as to what to actually do with it.
No elephant for me, I'm just addicted to achievements. There's no way to see other people's achievements, and I never look at leaderboards, but achievements seem to give me an extra layer of satisfaction. It's silly, I know, but it really makes it feel all the more worthwhile... If you're simply looking for interesting achievements, I'm sure people here can come up with that
Dont get me wrong, I totally get the concept of achievements and enjoy them myself - they're even fun to program (for a while, lol). I just don't know what you need gamecenter for in this regard tbh, never have. At least with XBLA there's some sort of uberscore across multiple games you can show off about. So, anyone have any cool ideas for what they might be? I've got plenty of my own ideas, some less obvious than others, but it'd be nice to hear some suggestions.
I've been hooked onto the X360 achievement system since, well, the release of the 360, so I was pretty excited about Game Center. Although it turned out that the system was more of a "for fun" type without a standardized system for achievements, I'm still having fun unlocking achievements for games I enjoy playing to begin with. So @Mr. Charley, nah, it's not silly to be an achievement junkie. XD I'll come up with more later on, I love coming up with achievements, but here's a few I've thought up while playing: Strategist - Capture all neutral buildings by Day 3 in Face Off. If I remember correctly you would have to use Sky Hooks + APCs (now Jeeps) effectively to be able to do so, not sure if the updates have changed anything though. One Man Army/Gung-ho - Complete A Brunch Too Far with only one additional unit trained. Could also require getting a Gold medal to make it harder, I haven't tried it myself but it should be possible with a Cruiser, and slightly harder with a Commando. Denied - Kill an enemy wave right after they land on Holiday. Or some other map with reinforcements. Maybe a Kill all enemy waves but that would be incredibly challenging on Holiday. Would be more manageable on F-Day though. Sadist - Kill all enemy units on Tank Jackers. Which would include the 2 snipers on each front. And there's also the standard "Kill X units" or "Kill X units with Z" and "Achieve Gold medals on all levels" type of achievements of course.
Can you run the SD version well on the iPad? I might buy an iPad tomorrow edit: didn't see that the HD version was universal. I'll probably pick it up then.
You can, but it's not gonna look great tbh. Scaling only takes you so far. The achievement I'm most looking forward to is for taking down a behemoth tank with a grunt.
Y'know, I have to say that as much as I liked the implementation of achievements in, say, World of Warcraft, Game Center leaves me pretty uninterested. Especially since there's absolutely no standardization, it's not like I have anything on which to compare myself to others. It's just a meaningless number. Also there's the fact that for so many games satisfying the achievement requires playing the game 500-1,000 times. Same thing with leader boards--it seems certain that people have found a way to hack them. I can get a few thousand points on Canabalt, but then after waiting ten minutes for Game Center to even load, it turns out that the high scores are in the millions... which really defies any believability. Even for games where people aren't hacking them, the whole point of high scores was beating a set number of people, like the people that would come visit that specific arcade. Playing against everyone, everywhere, even the insane ones that apparently have devoted their life to mastery of Fruit Ninja--what's the point?
Totally agree, you would like to have a better granularity on the leader boards. Like; best in Hökarängen, best in Stockholm, best in Sweden, etc. Just comparing your result to the insane ones doesn't really matter.
@Rubicon: not sure if it offers any sort of clue, but I was crashing on "Offensive" over and over again for a while, and the only thing that helped me continue on (although it didn't eliminate crashing forever), was to zoom in as much as I could. If I were to wildly speculate, perhaps zooming in reduces the absolute number of graphic elements being rendered, and gives me a little bit more time before some sort of leak grows too large. I noticed in particular it was triggered when I was clicking on a sniper...zoomed out, that click would 100% crash. Zoomed in, there was a bit of a hiccup (a little stall), but it got over it. Anyway, thought I'd post more details, see if that helps you guys narrow it down!
If you've not seen the news in our other thread, the iPad 2 issue is now fixed and the game is going into Beta test today. So this is the last call for Beta testers please, iPad 2 or otherwise (3GS and newer). If you can mail me your UDID within the next six hours, you can make it. Thanks.
sorry about that, musta gotten lost in the deluge. I'll go check and get your details, thanks. EDIT: Found it, but I don't have your email addresss. Can you send it to me at the link in my sig plz?
This looks awesome! Is this update coming to the LD version too? How do I beta test it? I've got a friend who'd love to pass and play.
Thanks! You missed the Beta - its running now. Which at least means you won't have to wait too long. We should be able to get this in to Apple at the end of the week or so. EDIT: Yes, 3GS also.
