Music is a growing industry that has expanded into the growing technology industry. If you intend to learn any kind of music instrument, you don’t necessarily need to pay a tutor or buy that instrument. Technology in the form of iOS apps are here to instruct, guide, and assist you. I have downloaded and tested many different apps and have a list of some good apps for music enthusiasts to check out.

    For Drummers:
BeatMaker 2 is an advanced mobile workstation for iOS devices. Combining music production tools that were behind the success of countless artists, BeatMaker 2 is a powerful, easy-to-use composition interface for amateurs and professionals alike.
    Price: $19.99

FingerBeat is the easy to use pocket sampler & drum-machine for everyone.
Use your intuition! Grab your own sounds using the microphone or use it to sing over your creations. Your creations are automatically saved and recalled upon exit for total immediacy, so you can just pick it up where you left off. You can also copy & paste audio from other applications into FingerBeat. Export or email beats to your friends.
    Price: $4.99

ReBirth faithfully emulates dance music's three backbone devices: The Roland TB-303 Bass synth and the Roland TR-808 and 909 drum machines. Combine these with FX units, fully featured pattern sequencers and a quick-acting, scalable iPhone interface and you'll soon be making techno on the train, trance on the tram or beats on the bus.

    For Guitarists:
AmpliTube for iPad, in combination with AmpliTube iRig interface adapter, gives you the incredible, ultra-realistic sound and functionality of AmpliTube in a convenient mobile platform app.

    For Pianists:

With Finger Piano you don’t need to be a master to play the piano with this application. The application displays a scrolling guide which acts as your instructor and, by following the guide, you can pick up the basics of piano fairly quickly.
    Price: $1.99

Pianist is a virtual piano for the iPhone and iPod Touch. Use it as a musical scratchpad when away from the studio, or as an instrument to jam with your friends.
    Price: $3.99

    For Instrument Tuning:
Guitar Toolkit is an essential guitar utilities, including an amazingly accurate tuner and a library of over 500,000 chords, all on your iPhone or iPod touch. One of the highest rated applications in the App Store.

Cleartune’s Chromatic Tuner lets you adjust an instrument swiftly and effortlessly. It’s Note Wheel feature can let you easily find your pitch, coupled with a highly responsive fine-tuning meter.

TuneORama is appropriate to fine tune a range of musical instruments in it’s chromatic mode. There is an automatic mode available in which the application becomes a clever and real time tuner for guitar and bass, and there are plenty more features to explore.

    For Synthesizers:
FILTATRON is much more than your average sound app. It’s a phenomenal real-time audio effects suite and powerful studio tool for your iPhone or iPod Touch. Run the sound through a virtual version of the famous Moog filter with a little (or a lot) of filter modulation, delay, and overdrive to create your own musical statement.

    For DJs & Mixers:

djay transforms your iPhone/ iPod touch or iPad into a full-fledged portable DJ system and seamlessly integrates with your iPod library, giving you direct access to all your favorite tracks and playlists. A hyper-realistic touchscreen interface and ultra-low latency converge to offer you a true professional mixing experience, right in the palm of your hand. The application will auto tune your voice, and you can share the song over social networks with a single button.

Auto-Tune Star lets you record your voice and add the Auto-Tune® effect to your voice in a few simple and fun steps. You can also pick beats and most songs from your music library to sing karaoke style. You can also make your own fun music album cover and add your own pictures. Your latest hit creations can be shared by email and on Facebook.
    Price: $1.99

VocaLive provides singers and vocalists with a suite of 12 real-time professional vocal effects along with a capable recorder for studio quality sound in a portable package. The effects can be combined into a chain of 3 processors and saved as presets. A collection of up to 50 presets is included to get you up and running immediately.

Whether your looking to make some tracks or just have fun, there is something in these apps for you. Of course theses apps will never come close to the real thing, but if your looking to learn, play, or just get down some ideas, there is something here for you.

What are some music apps you've tried that you think are paving a new way in music tech?

NanoStudio not mentioned = FAIL. ;)

I'm not gonna look up all the links & prices, but:

Music Studio - best studio for classical/traditional music. NanoStudio is better for synthheads like myself, BeatMaker 2 is a sampler studio.

ThumbJam is an essential tool for live jamming and/or just having fun. :)

Bebot is like a synth version of ThumbJam.

iShred / Guitar are fantastic live-play guitar apps.

iVoxel is the only real vocoder app, and is also suitable for live use.

Hardware-wise, you'll want an iRig to plug your guitar/microphone in, or a SynthStation 25 to work those keys (supports NanoStudio, iVoxel from the above list)

If you want to make some of the most unique sounds out there, try Jasuto / Jasuto Pro (a real modular synth! Complex enough to make a basic vocoder out of...)

Sound Grid is probably the best Tenori On app.

Pocket Organ C3B3 is a great drawbar organ simulator.

Noise.IO's interface is wierd, but it's a convincing analogue synth.
