It's true, runs great on iOS7 as long as you are on new hardware. Runs great on all hardware using iOS6. I am running it on a 4S and an iPad2 using 6.1.2. and it runs like silk, no stuttering and great frame rate. This is an iOS7 optimization issue, plain and simple.
But there's reports of people saying there's frame rate drops on ipad 4. And im still waiting on a definite answer, will this game run on my ipod 4th gen with ios6? At playable frame rates? Or will it not start at all?
There is enough of a range of hardware for iOS that these games need to start featuring adjustable 'native res' as well as a host of sliders for shaders and stuff. Also, in a dream world apple would drop nonsensical forced iOS upgrades, and let people downgrade. My iPad 3 is a DOG on iOS 7. A little soon to start hex editing the core, but it would be nice to get a statement from the team behind the port that they are working on outright bugs as well as general optimization across the board. Framerate is always more important than goodies, period.
The problem is that they make games mainly centred around marketing strategy. If you have a good market strategy you can sell anything. All devs really care about is the $$$$ so they make the game 'marketable' not necessarily playable as its clever marketing that gets sales. Once the game's sold it doesn't matter if you can't play it. The dev's got his money. That's all its about. Good luck hoping that they fix it because once they got your money they couldn't care less.
Tested on an iPod 4G with 6.1.2. and it is playable but with a frame rate hovering around 10 to 15 with light traffic option enabled.
Well that may be the case with the majority, but war drum studios (the ones who ported this game) have a very excellent track record of updating their ports till most problems are smoothed out.
Unfortunately Rockstar holds the purse strings and they are not renowned for fixing sloppy ports. As I mentioned, the devs in charge of the port may have packed their bags and moved on. Again look at Chinatown Wars - probably a very simple fix but it is simply ganked from the App Store because that is the easier thing to do. Again, a port of a port that Rockstar already paid for and no one works for free. The android release of this game will tell the tale, because there is no way they will get it right across 12,000 unique devices and not be forced to patch after the fact. I don't care if I have to double dip, the thought of this game running noticeably better on my '13 Nexus 7 is enough to make me drool. I am not holding my breath though, even Bethesda ports have a better track record than Rockstar...
Yeah, when I had an ipad 3, it was doomed when I went to ios 7, ios 6 was so smooth and really ipad 3s were better off on it. Now that I have an ipad 4, ios 7 is ok, but I remember so many horrors with ios 7 with an ipad 3.
If this doesn't get patched soon, i'll hit the refund button, easy as that. If i can't play it due to gamebreaking bugs and/or a horrible framerate then sorry, but no one is ripping me off, neither rockstar nor war drum studios. end of story.
The Android version is getting a lot of bad reviews so far. I'm not sure if this is accurate, but from what my brother told me (he has a Galaxy S3), at first the game didn't work at all. A patch was quickly released, but although it made the app start, it crashes before you can load the actual game.
Oh, ouch. I got all lathered up at the mention of an android release... With 2500+ reviews it is averaging a score of 1.8 on the Google Play Store. Ouch. So much for my dreams of a buttery smooth android port. Oh Rockstar, all your money and you still can't code an engine for crap.
I mailed both War Drum and Rockstar support about the Retina Mini framerate issue...didn't even get a reply. And now I hear the android version is garbage as well.
Maybe you should actually play it on an iPad air before attacking people. I love GTA games since GTA1 but right now this framerate goes from 'ok' to 'borderline unplayable' and back. I've not asked for a refund yet, I just want to hear that there's an incoming patch to fix it.
Android version is 2.4gb (not sure if download of install size) wonder why its bigger than iOS version.
