Here is what kotaku/rockstar has to say about single core iOS devices. http://www.kotaku.com/5850005/gta-iii-anniversary-edition-will-come-to-non+bleeding+edge-ios-devices-too
According to Kotaku, the prayers of iPhone 4 / iPodTouch 4/iPad 1 owners have been answered. No info on which "legacy" devices are involved, but the ones I listed are a good bet. So is Rockstar still a "lazy developer" Sanuku?
I just had a mini heart attack of joy. As weird as that sounds. Oh I am so glad that that will be out for my iPad 1. I really didn't want to have to buy a new device to play it,
There's no GTA 3 for the PSP. But then again, I'm not sure how you get to play on the PSP at all since you are clearly blind .
I would assume since it was shown at comic con today. Maybe Rockstar had a strict no video taping rule. Still I would guess someone would try and sneak some video of it. Of course we still have tomorrow for some video to leak out.
Great news. It'll definitely be interesting to see if this was accomplished through optimization or if major sacrifices had to be made when run on older devices. If only developers would comment on how they feel about each older device since they all have their quirks. The original iPad has a comparatively powerful CPU at 1GHz, but it has a GPU that is underpowered per pixel and is RAM constrained by the high resolution. The iPhone 4 has a weaker CPU at 800MHz, likewise has a GPU that is underpowered per pixel, but is not RAM constrained. The 4th gen iPod Touch also has a weaker 800MHz CPU compared to the iPad, and is also GPU underpowered per pixel and RAM constrained by resolution. The iPhone 3GS and 3rd gen Touch has the weakest CPU at 600MHz, but has good GPU power per pixel and it's 256MB of RAM goes further because it doesn't need to support a Retina Display. If a game isn't CPU constrained, 3rd gen devices should do quite well. I get the feeling though that a 600MHz Cortex A8 just doesn't cut it anymore for the latest games.
I think you got some of the facts wrong. From what I've heard, the ip4 gpu while being the same sgx535 thats in the 3gs is running at 200MHz,while the one in the 3gs is clocked at around 110MHz.That increases the fillrate and should the least compensate for the increased resolution.Another thing is that the memory bandwith in the iphone 4 and the ipod touch 4 was increased from 32bit to 64bit.iphone 3gs,ipod touch 3g and apparently the first ipad had 32bit bandwith. That might sound weird about the ipad, after all its the same A4 but would the explain the poor performance in higher-end games compared to the ip4.And about the RAM constraints-I'm running a jailbroken iphone and through sbsettings can monitor my available RAM.When there are no apps running its around 330-350Mb,and when I run the most intensive of games it rarely goes below 200Mb.Its true that the ip4 needs more RAM for idle operation-my old 3gs had a maximum free RAM of 170Mb while the ip4 has around 350-360Mb.You do the math.In any case dont see how the RAM could be an issue. And damn am i excited to hear that they will support older devices!
Yeah. I don't have 3rd/4th gen ipods/iphones, but every SINGLE APP that I see that doesn't include retina, It's 'waaahhh, why no retina 1/5 stars '
As far as I know, there's been no firm information on GPU clock speeds, but tests have shown that the SGX535 in the iPhone 4 is no where near 2 times faster than the iPhone 3GS. http://www.glbenchmark.com/compare.jsp?benchmark=glpro21&showhide=true&certified_only=2&D1=Apple%20iPhone%203G%20S&D2=Apple%20iPhone%204 For example, GLBenchmark 2.1's Offscreen results, where the two devices are both outputting at 720p for a fair, direct comparison show that the realizable difference in raw GPU performance is around 10%. It seemed like the common thought is usually that the GPU is clocked at 1/4 of the CPU clock speed, putting the SGX535 in the iPhone 3GS at 150MHz, the iPhone 4 at 200Mhz, and the original iPad at 250MHz. Note, the iPhone 4's Retina Display is 4 times the resolution of the iPhone 3GS. And regarding the RAM, I specifically pointed out that the iPhone 4 is not particularly RAM constrained at 512MB. It's the original iPad and 4th gen iPod Touch that have only 256MB yet sporting high resolution displays. All Apple A4 devices have a 64-bit memory bus.
That's because every game looks like total s**t without retina support. I thought the same way as you before I upgraded. Don't criticize what you obviously don't understand. /off topic
That's true. But if they have to make it non-retina to make it run smoothly on A4 devices, I say do it. Better than not having the game at all. The menus and all can be high rez but the game graphics could run at a lower resolution, no problem.
I reckon, people should have an option between: 'retina - low performance', and 'no retina - high performance'.
Not really,an iPhone 4s is too expensive atleast for me,even for this game,I will never buy an iPhone 4s. He means to say playing GTA Vice City and Liberty City stories on the PSP.
