    So I just got a 13" MacBook Pro. :D:D:D:D:D
The question is simple: Now what?

    Here's a list of what I've done:

    -Opened it :)
    -Installed Firefox
    -Downloading iPhone SDK (free SDK).
-Transferred my iTunes Library of music, vids, and apps to Mac.

P.S: Photoshop and iWork and Office; I know I gotta install. But not until tomorrow, my friend has the discs.

so you bought a mac and dont know what to do with it.....

    SUGGESTIONS:

    Throw it in a fire
    drop it in the tub
    purposely lose it
give it away to a friend
    give it to chuck norris
    browse the internet

Have a play with iMovie. Very handy app, especially for putting iPhone demo movies together. It takes a little longer to learn than it used to, but it's the best home video editing app available.

Also grab the Pixelmator demo. It's a nice 'minimal' Photoshop-a-like that's fast and nowhere near as expensive as photoshop.

If you're working with anyone else on your iPhone project, SubEthaEdit is a way handy collaborative text editor. Just drag friends from your iChat buddy list to it and they'll join in being able to text simultaneously. Great for working out common to-do lists on the project or zapping copy and pasted code to one another.

A MobileMe (used to be .mac) account is handy to. You get a bunch of stuff like the "Back to my Mac" and "Find my Phone" features, but you also get a really solid chunk of web hosting for your movies and pics. Very very handy for showing off your iPhone project and very easy to use.

Ahh...yes iMovie. How could I forget? Yeah I'm passing some vids from my PC and I'll have a play with it.

I've been hearing of this Pixelmator app. Even the Rolando dev switched to it. But I'm a die-hard Photoshop fan and will die with CS4.

Oh really? That sounds awesome! Just to be clear, I downloaded the free SDK but don't know if I'll be able to program. :(

Way ahead of you my friend ;). I've had MobileMe since it launched. I have to research "Back to my Mac" to see what it is but know of all it's other features. It seems you like it. Wonder what I'll find in your movies / pics MobileMe account......

Just about anything you guys like / find useful really. I'm new (this is my first mac) so I gotta get filled in ;)

I'm installing iLife, Office, and Photoshop tomorrow. But other than that, I don't know what else to install right now. :/

    hi Danny95,
Congrats on your purchase. I'm envious of your new 13" MBP, but my iMac will be coming soon :)
I had a macmini from years ago and it's still in device today. I used iMovie with my wife to great a photo slideshow for our wedding, mixing in photos with text and music seamlessly. It's really good fun and my wife said it was easier than Windows Movie Maker too.
I also enjoyed sorting my photos in iPhoto, which is now even better with Faces, Places and Events. Have a look at the video tutorials at http://www.apple.com/mac Thats how I learnt to use some of the more advanced features. If you have time, also download the apple video podcasts of the MacWorld and WWDC events, as Jobs etc demo new software features. That's what got me all ruled up to try a Mac!

Give Garageband a shot. Most iPhone app store developers have made great tunes for their games just by piecing some rhythms together from the GB riffs. You can even have tutorials from real musicians like Sting or Norah Jones.

You might have iWork '09 demo installed. Try that to create a team roster or document. See if Numbers works better for you than Excel, or OpenOffice.

Use iWeb to quickly draw up a web site or blog, and upload it to a free trial of MobileMe (latter needs credit card details but won't be charged if you cancel ahead of deadline). Or even FTP it to your own website. Pass the link to your mates so they can enjoy a video slideshow or download video clips.

Start Time Machine to automatically backup your internal drive files hourly. Note first time should leave computer on overnight, the rest is sequential backups.

Play around with Dashboard and adding widgets for quick access, like calculators/unit converters, translators, news clippings, etc.

Need to rename a huge bunch of files? Give Automator a whirl. See the tutorial on it.

Have friends also on mac? Fire up iChat! It's pretty damn impressive, especially when you try the presentation mode and also the remote assistance feature!

That's all just stuff built into mac.

Third party stuff you wanna get hold of are:
Perian - almost every video codec
Flip4Mac - watch WMV clips via QuickTime
SuperDuper - clones your entire HDD for instant recovery. Use a FireWire cable to set the external disk as Target Disk Mode to boot off that cloned drive to continue working, until you can replace the internal drive. A real life saver!!
Adium - instant chat with MSN, ICQ and AIM friends in one easy app.
MacTheRipper - best DVD ripping app
Handbrake - open sourced app for converting DVD rips into iPhone format

Need any help, let me know! I'm still not an expert, but I do love my mac and messing around with it. Enjoy!

I'm going to raid my local DVD rental shop to do just this as I've exhausted the local library's Massive CD collection! It's great being able to borrow them and rip into lossless for free. And it's not illegal in the sense of downloading from piratebay or something (... Or is it???)

I'm pretty sure it's a gray area when it comes to that... Although you're not illegally downloading the movies, you don't technically 'own' the DVD.

well, i don't think anybody is going to raid you for the suspicion that you may be ripping dvds ;). however you are only legally allowed to copy the dvds you own.
