I like how it's called the "Google+ Project" - as though they're thinking ahead so that when it fails they can say, "yeah it was just a project we thought we'd try out" rather than, "yes we failed miserably at usurping Facebook, AGAIN" I also like how it's 'exclusive' and invite only, as opposed to when they launched Buzz (or whichever it was) where they RAMMED IT INTO YOUR FACE. At least I can not sign up more easily this time. Having said that I do hope it succeeds though - my issue isn't so much social media it's more that I cannot stand Facebook (deleted my personal account long ago). Don't get me started on apps that constantly bug you to enable Facebook integration so it spams your friends' feed with adverts for the game.. <rest of rant deleted> I'm not really in the key demographic though (late 30s) - I grew up when Tomorrow's World wowed us all at the compact disc, when games came on cassette and chips came in newspaper. A time that wasn't only before The Internet, it was before The Simpsons. Imagine THAT.
I like it more than facebook, but I don't know if it's sufficiently better to justify a global switch-off. If they keep working on it hard, it might be the case though. The friends circles thing is rad, seems like the perfect contacts management, summarizes well the concepts seen in facebook and twitter. When they'll add "apps" support, I hope they'll find a way to keep their garbage updates separate from the actual ones.
Yeah the whole circles thing seems so obvious now, I bet Mark Z is kicking himself he didn't think of that. Unless Facebook can rip off Google's idea I am certain that Google+ will very rapidly take the crown. I seems like a trivial difference but in reality the difference is huge. Perhaps Zuckerberg can just take the idea and the subsequent courtroom drama that ensues can be the basis of The Social Network 2 The fact that EVERYONE you are friends with on Facebook sees all your posts really constrains what you want to post, and you'd forever see family holiday photos from people who's home life you have no interest in (eg just a work colleague). That is probably the main reason I couldn't stand Facebook and quit it, and why I might actually give Google+ a chance.
The thing is, you can modify that, but it's a pain in the ass. I just restricted the visibility of pictures where I'm tagged to exclude a group of persons that I don't know well. I also like that in Google+ you are able to see the (public) posts of someone you might not know in person without having to wait him to accept, twitter-style.
To me that just sums up the entire internet. You Google a word, you get answers you didn't need. You visit a forum, you see threads and posts you don't care about. You join Twitter/Facebook, you see posts you don't care about. Ignoring the crap and focusing on the information you wanted comes totally naturally to most people, I've blocked a few annoying people on Facebook so their posts no longer appear and it takes all of a few seconds to scan the wall each time I visit, no biggie, it's just a part of life.
when invites are open, pocket full of apps will give out more invites. their twitter: http://twitter.com/#!/pocketfullofapp the page with instructions (website): http://pocketfullofapps.com/2011/07/08/pocketfullofapps-is-giving-away-google-invites.html I'm first on the list for invites next time, since I emailed them a couple minutes before invites closed and... then they closed.
