I wasn't really impressed with the announcement because it's already being done now with Boxee and to a lesser extent, Windows Media Center. I have my cable hooked up to my TV tuner card and just leave my PC on to record TV shows for free. Then I can just connect Windows Media Center through my 360 and watch TV from there :)

These two statements in the article show that what Google is doing is a potential game changer, and is something that Apple SHOULD have been doing with AppleTV all this time:

    and

That part in bold is what Apple should have done with AppleTV, and still can.

I'm not just talking about allowing 3rd parties like Netflix and Amazon to write apps allowing Apple to take a cut on app sales though. Google is currently focused on stuff like that. What Apple could do is take it to the next level, as shown with the current App Store. AppleTV would basically be an iPhone/touch/iPad...for the living room. Not only music, movies/TV shows, and podcasts, but also GAMES and other types of apps (even creative and productivity apps, like photo editors and slide show presentation apps).

Google's idea is good. Apple could do it better. Google's is centered on web surfing and watching video and such. Apple's could be focused on doing for the living room set top box what they did for the mobile platform industry with iPhone/touch. I have no idea why they haven't already. They see it as a "hobby", but really the set top box is the next revolution in home computing AND entertainment, which is really one and the same.

True, but this is a more mass market sort of set up: it's all built into ONE single device, be it a set top box or the TV itself. Your set up is not something the mass market consumer would go through the trouble of setting up. Your set up is much more "niche" than GoogleTV has the ability to be. And, yes, I know it's simple for you and I to set WMC up, but the mass market can't be bothered with that sort of thing. They just want it to work out of the box, really. Simple set up and ease of use goes a long way. Boxee too is great, but stuff like Google TV and moreso Apple TV (IMHO) have the potential to do more and reach a much wider consumer audience.

Not gonna replace my media server anytime soon. :)
Bit of a messy setup, but it works, and with the bonus of letting me access my TV shows from anywhere I have my iPhone and an Internet connection.

And you guys with your custom set ups need to remember that they are going to allow 3rd party devs. to make apps for it, who knows what we will see!
