Level Guide by : Robtop I really need to write a good level editor guide with some tips and tricks on improving level design. I will try to create one after update 1.9 and the Steam version is released. Right now I have lots and lots to do. But here are a few quick tips: - Try to figure out a theme, and build within that theme. If you look at a few of the later official levels, I usually design a level in sections, with each section created with a theme in mind. The visual appeal is much greater when you try to create a theme instead of just adding details to a map. A simple way to design a theme is to combine a certain type of block with a certain type of detail. Dont mix to many things together as that will make the theme seem chaotic. - Build your level in sections. By building a level in sections you give the player a set of goals to complete. Each section can be defined by a seperate theme. Tip: Listen to the music to determine where a section should start and end. Also by creating a theme it is easier for the player to navigate your map. Instead of saying "I reached 63%", the player can say "I reached the ice section, fire section" etc. - Dont clutter up the level. A lot of levels tend to use to many details, making the obstacles hard to spot. Try to design a clear path for the player to take, and then add details around that path. That way the details do not confuse the player. You can of course ignore this technique to create a more confusing challenge, Electrodynamix is an example of a map that breaks this rule, but I prefer the clearer option. - Dont forget details! Not adding details or a designing theme makes the level look bland and players will not want to put in the effore to complete the level. A lot of players dont play to just collect stars or complete a level. Many players play a level just to see what theme or challenges are coming up next. This is also awesome in update 1.9, since players will want to play a new level just to hear the next part of a new song. - Begin with a simple challenge. Building a good easy level is better to start with than trying to create a good difficult level. Designing a hard level is not really that complicated, but designing an entertaining hard level that looks and plays good is trickier. Also keep in mind that easier levels can be played by more casual players, which will generate more downloads for your map. That's just a few quick notes, I will go through a lot of things and cool tricks when I write a full guide. Back to work
Anyway, I just noticed my level got Insane and 280 downloads... in less than 24 hours!! I can't believe it!! Whoa...next step -> Stars! xD
find and remove unneeded objects that don't really affect design and gameplay. Also it is possible to get 29998 by copy-pasting when you have 14999 objects. But that will be pretty laggy
why does it lag for me when I turn recording on? is that supposed to happen or is it my sucktastic phone? it lags even when I have load songs to memory turned on... how do you guys record?
"Everyplays video capture leverages built-in functionality and an onboard H.264 hardware encoder, so there is virtually no performance loss: no impact on GPU and nearly zero impact on CPU. The video is streamed directly to the file system to avoid memory issues and the effect on the phones battery is minimal." sorry if I'm understanding this wrongly, but this is taken from the everyplay FAQ...
It's surprising how I got ideas so quickly. I finished my level yesterday, this morning I got an idea... I'm uploading the video of the preview on my YouTube, so I would like a feedback, and possibly a cool name becuase the one I put doesn't really fit the level... ^_^
