As far as I can tell it's the written representation of how a person is beckoned in speech. You don't call out "James" or "Steve" to get someone's attention, you say "Jaaaaames" or "Steeeeve". That or it's a typing quirk. Though I have to say, I prefer your version. Fun fact: if you yell "echo" at midnight three times in front of your bathroom mirror, your parents will wake up and tell you to go to bed. A while back TA had a redesign which enabled avatars for everyone, not just developers, moderators and admins. With that came a default avatar for those who didn't set a custom one. Mine is that same avatar... Turned upside down. And he's confused about it! ...I like simple quirky things like that. (Though it kinda looks like a squeegee)
