Genuine question: How the hell does Twitter work?

    Does anyone here actually use it and have a decent number of followers? It's my understanding that Twitter is more open to socialising with people you don't know directly, but I don't understand how you're supposed to gain any followers unless you actually know them already, and I've got Facebook for that anyway.

    So let's assume that nobody I know uses Twitter... does that render it completely pointless, or am I supposed to create an account and talk to myself while occasionally butting in to other peoples conversations until someone decides to follow me?

    I wouldn't mind using the service if it had some kind of dropping off point, but it seems to me that unless you've already established the social circle somehow (or are in the media), Twitter is somewhat unfriendly and unforgiving.

    Well I have 1,450 followers on my account http://twitter.com/imaninjah so I could help a little.

    After you've created your twitter, you can tell in a site/facebook/ta sig or somewhere that you have a twitter user. That should give you the first followers. Now, follow people, famous verified, people who post funny tweets in trends etc. Get to know them by replying, after a while they follow you. If not, you can always as a follow back or someone to do a FollowFriday tweet to you.

    Another way, which works for me is that you tweet about the current trends daily and if you tweet something funny/fact people will see that you're a nice guy who tweets awesome stuff and follow you.

    3rd way, more common to iOS people is that you just tweet iOS stuff and discuss about them with other iOS gamers or devs.

    Either way, I gained about 1,000 of my followers by posting my twitter account on my CP blog(yes I was a kid while I blogged about that!! :p) and got those, mainly cause it had over 300,000 views. Anyway, I've lost most of those followers and now iOS and trending topic hunters follow me mostly.

    Hope that helps at least a little. Remember, tweet daily, tweet funny, tweet fact and make people enjoy reading your tweets.

    Thanks, some good info there :)

    I do actually have two Twitter accounts, one I just created to retweet for competitions and other misc TA stuff that required it, and a personal one that's totally empty.

    I guess one of the main barriers for me is the way people suggest that the best way to get followers is by following other people. I can see how that makes sense, but at the same time I don't want to go following random people and filling up my feed with stuff I don't care about. It's probably gonna be a lot slower if I'm not follow spamming everyone.

    I do very little twitter, and only have a few followers, but it is funny how I will get messages about some random person who is now following me. Also, it is as easy as clicking the "unfollow" button if you are getting too much stuff. I'm told that people that tweet consistently generally have a lot of followers. But, I don't get the point of it all either. To me it seems a bit like those folks that just walk down streets throwing out random thoughts and expecting people to listen and care. It makes sense to me in war ravaged areas because one probably has an idea of places to avoid.

    I started my twitter to follow some TA members as well as iPhone devs. I only have like 60 followers but it's not really about who follows you. Twitter is like a personal news feed of sorts so by choosing the people/websites you wish to follow you'll get a pretty interesting timeline.

    good luck on your members. twitter and facebook i have no use for. if i owned a company, i think it makes sense to use.. at least till the trend moves onto something new.. like the transition from myspace to facebook.

    but then i think myspace was more about bands then people/ i dunno i never did myspace either.. i fail. laughs.

    I don't twitter and probably never will. And now only just recreated another Facebook account (deleted one earlier) only to keep in touch with my daughters doings. But I can see a purpose if there is something in common to twitter about such as gaming, etc. Personally I could never understand the attraction to reading random posting trying to be witty to gain popularity. I'd be bored to tears.

    Well I'm not exactly looking to become an internet celebrity, I was just hoping for some decent 2-way conversation :p That's partly why I don't want to add a ton of random people though, right now I'm only following a few tech, science and news feeds. Stuff I'd actually want to click on.

    Twitter's not just for the purpose of using dubious and somewhat creepy 'tricks' to gain followers

    I find twitter easier to deal with than facebook; the phone app I have is far better than the web version, so I tend to use that more (the android fb app really sucks). Best of all, my family isn't on twitter :p

    Most of the people who I follow and vice versa are other writers, tech, and rl friends. I have about 350 followers at this point after almost 3 years on. I'd have more but haven't tweeted much due to health and other issues. I also follow a couple of news sources as well. I've met some very cool people through twitter, but like everything it depends on what you want out of it.

    So elaborate? I don't know what gave you the impression that's what I was after, especially given the post I wrote right above yours. That said, if you don't have followers, nothing you post there will be read, and you'll have a much tougher time trying to start a conversation. Flawed much?

    You can @reply to people that don't follow you and they will see it. So you can have a two way conversation with people you want to talk to.

    Just pick people you are interested in, follow them. Some might follow you back, some might not. @reply when you have something interesting to say.

    Thanks arn, so I guess a big part of Twitter is just reading into existing conversations/watching trending topics and then joining in when it takes your interest. I could give that a shot. I got Tweetbot in the sale just because it's such a well-designed and app, so I might as well try to use it :)

    I've about 5 followers I think and I'm not sure how I even got that many I use it more like a newsfeed and rarely ever post anything and when I do actually post something it's likely just a link to an article I found interesting.
    Still I like to search things on twitter occasionally and see what people are saying about certain topics.

    My guess is if you really wanted followers best bet is to basicly make yourself a news or comedy feed of some sort.

    I was replying to the guy who replied to you first.

    Think of Twitter as the next stage of the search engine, a living organic machine that is constantly changing and evolving with new information and content. It is the quickest way to find almost anything out that is happening practically anywhere in the world and when you've got over the original hurdle you can use it as the best tool for finding new books/music/anything.

    Ah okay, bit of a mixup :)

    I think a lot of the confusion comes from the way the media reports on the website. For someone who doesn't use it, most of what they know about it relates to celebrities accounts, which are pretty much driven by the endless numbers of followers they have. It kinda gives the impression that the way to use Twitter is by having some kind of following you can interact with, but I see now that's not the case. I'm gonna explore it a bit later on tonight as see if I can find something fun or interesting :)

    Never said it was. I also commented on a purpose for twitter (gaming, etc)
    But yea I'am a bit jaded as I'm always hearing people saying/doing the dumbest things and reaching for their device to think other's will want to read of it on twitter.

    But then I've also been known to try something different and useful as your last post stated on twitter and possibly could be something later down the road but just not at this time. I must admit though this thread has sparked a small flicker of interest. I'd just curtail it to certain preferences is all as MidianGTX stated.

    I've been glancing at it on and off over the past 24 hours... there are definitely conversaitons to be had, but I'm not sure I could go very long before feeling compelled to start commenting on the idiocy of some of the people that use it.

    It's probably a flaw in my character to be honest, but it's incredibly tempting when you search for a subject/object/person you like and instantly find yourself faced with page upon page of people making ridiculous observations and hating on said subject/object/person. If you're into arguments, there seem to be about a million potential ones starting on Twitter every minute.

    By the way, I didn't ask what kind of twitter profile you want. My comments were for people like me who uses Twitter to both gain followers, have conversations and stuff like that. If you want to talk of iOS stuff or anything in general, I know at least few TA users twitter who use twitter constantly:

    @ImANinjah - Me, talk daily of basically anything
    @Back2This - iOS, X-Factor, stuff
    @Triggywiggy - iOS, sometimes other stuff
    @Jdragoon19 - ios, other stuff
    @DaKleine - Der-Kleine talks of iOS and stuff
    @hodapp - doesn't need an introduction...
    @WunDaii - doesnt use ta that often(besides creating big threads such as mc3 thread), but talks of anything like me, often ios or console.

    Those people I talk to a lot, well triggy not so much lately, but yeah, those.
