Ok so I have an hour to kill before my genius bar appointment and was just "trolling" (meaning: to wade through... like a single motored boat.
Not the mythical antaganist in most stories we love.)

Now this might be an adult topic so if your among the adolecent demographic of Touch Arcade members stop reading.........now!

Obviousley the word "gay" has had many condontations throughout history and even today it used as a eufemisim:

    "That's....., you're being....., this argument is.....dude you're being...."

GAY (stupid, pointless, redundant, *insult, etc.)

Now I have a couple of lesbian friends and not only do they not mind when people use the word gay in meaning for any the above examples, but they themselves use it too.

As well as most people that run in the circles of my same interest (like T.A.)

so just as an opinionated thread how do you feel when the word gay is used in refferance with negative condontaions?

Do you find it offensive reguardless of your sexual preferance?

personally I do use it as a negative slang term....however I wouldn't never find myself critisizing anyone's preferance.

    uhh...

I have many homosexual friends and I can honestly tell you that most of them don't like when people say "that is gay" or use it in a similar way.

you honestly don't see how it's insulting?

it's like walking around saying "man that's white!" or "dude that's so black!"

actually I do see how it is.

I am black and white....but look more black and used to say "nigga" to and with all of my black friends. Somewhere along the line I just shed that word not for richeouse reasons, just because I did. but I've had it said to me from white people in very negative ways also.

So rather than assume I don't know...assume that the only reason I would make such a thread is because I do understand.

    thank you
    for your opinion:)

    1. Yes, it is often offensive.
    2. you mean; orientation, not preference.

EDIT: and marginalized communities are not cookie cutter communities. It is ignorant to assume you have in depth understanding of one you don't belong to.

your correct was looking for the word.

    to your edit:
agreed, although I'm not gay doesn't mean I don't have any experience with prejudice.

If it truly didn't have any connection to a person's sexual orientation, then I'd have no problem. But I believe that it is connected... People feel very "safe" insulting homosexuals... I think the use of the word gay with a negative connotation is a part of that...

+1 I absolutely hate it when people use gay to denote bad. It's just really insulting and makes the user look like an ass. Everyone is different but me personally think it's very ignorant. I am lesbian

I know but saying "that's homosexual" just doesn't have the same ring to it.

See that's the problem, is the association. Why not just say "wow that sucks!".

Douche: "Dude, that book is so gay."
Me: "It's a book. It can't have a sexual preference."

I can't tell you how many times I've had a variation of this little gem of a conversation, usually followed by a bewildered look from Douche.

As a black bisexual, I have used the word "Niggah" and the word "Gay" (as something bad) and if people say "that show is gay" I don't mind as I used it before I realised I was Bi and then continued to use it afterwards, so it's just a normal part of my vocabulary.
However when people have called me (or someone else) "Nigger" I have gotten pretty pissed off, because that will never be acceptable for white people to say, I don't really care if you think you should be able to say it as we can, you can't.

(>sarcasm-alert<)Saying "Gay" instead of stupid makes the person who used it look retarded. (>sarcasm- alert<)

Seems offensive to people who actually are gay, so i tend not to use it as a negative term, same with "fag".

Just seems down right stupid to use it as a negative, but i would definitely be more offended if people started using straight as an insult.

Mostly Douchebags use it, primarily because they think racist slang is a little over the top.

Edit: really, no one got any hint of sarcasm in the first part of this post?

and by retarded I'm sure you're not meaning mentally cause that would be offensive to a lot of people.

even though I do understand where your coming from...even if not in a literal sense

no, but to suck, more than one suckable object, and to do it frequently is generally perceived as a negative thing. So are you comparing homosexuals, and therefore me, to a slut? (in social reputation and moral levels)
