By the way, I lasted 4 minutes before buying it. Well worth my $6.99; I wasn't that impressed by the preview videos but the game itself is pretty good. Although unfortunately I'm getting a few frame rate issues on my 2nd Gen iPod Touch.
I think the point here is that to be able to play a game like this on the go is a pretty amazing thing. Even GTA:CW on the DS, while awesome, is still a top down type thing, whereas this is actually a full blown GTA type experience, etc. I think the fact that it exists at all outweighs the limitations placed on it by the platform it's on. No one's expecting this thing to rival GTA 4, but for a game you play on your phone- it's really quite amazing. And this is just the beginning- as more and more developers begin creating games specifically for the iphone, they're just going to get better and better. So if this is what they can do now, at the start of the iphone gaming era, just imagine how amazing games will be in a couple of years from now. If Gangstar is a sign of things to come, I'm really quite pleased indeed.
Okay, I pulled myself away from the screen to write some impressions: First, the city is huge, and so detailed, since you can even go on roofs, that I don't get what that "15 by 15 block" person was talking about. It's plenty big for me. I have a 1st Generation iPod Touch on 3.0 (not jailbroken) and it runs incredibly smoothly. INCREDIBLY. Also, it's really fun, and roaming around on your own is great. I got into a car crash, and beat up some girl that tried to take back her car that I stole. The only thing I could complain about are the controls for the car, it doesn't react as much as you would like it to, but I can also see the handling for the different cars, and that isn't too bad. Overall, if you like this type of game at all, get Gang$tar. It is easily worth $6.99.
is there like a store where you can buy guns or other items? Or is there a lot of stores you can go in to? I want to try to go on top of the roofs and snipe peopleXD
i'm not made of money but people really complain about prices too much. what will 3 bucks get you these days? how many hours, how much money and effort go into these games. whats not to get about 15 city blocks x 15 city blocks--> look at the map and count.... drive around the city to see how long it takes. it's not bad but should be bigger. that said there is plenty to do within that.
well its a damn good achievement for an iphone, never thought id play a 3d GTA style game at all with an idevice, so i congratulate gameloft for realising a new genre for us to enjoy! with the power of 3gs and good sales of this (inevitable number 1 game here lets be honest) there can only be good things to come in the future. control wise i think, with a tiny bit of fine tuning, its as good as you can expect. found them responsive and intuitive, only chosen stick control for now as its how im used to them on the consoles. they work fine for me. disappointed in the lack of a jump button, maybe unrequired in the game but not a drastic an omission for me to get wound up about gfx are great! no its not a ps3/xbox (or even psp GTA) quality game for this price, but its very impressive and everything moves quite smoothly. havnt tried any missions yet, map seems a decent size tho. i can see myself picking this up a lot for a quick game. a really good solid release here tho am certain to find bugs and glitches soon!
Thanks for your impressions fleabag, this line is the one I was waiting for, 2 more days before I can DL this unless someone like Big Al spoils all the fun!
Really? Well then you are going to miss out on this game because the lowest I can see it going is $5. And you are part of the reason why there are not more high quality games in the appstore.
if $3 is the highest your going to go to buy games, then your gonna miss out on games that are coming out soon that look amzing.
Yes there is a store where you can buy guns and ammo. This is also available in the menu, i assume for mid-mission access. There is also a car hire shop, offering some cars I haven't seen in the city like the limo, dodge viper esque thing etc. And there also appears to be a repair shop too. Also hers a screenshot of the map. Its not that small, its got lots of areas to explore - at least the size of Jack City from CJS. And this is fully 3d!
Too bad I can't buy this yet. 99c left in my account just waiting for geoDefense: Swarm, PLUS I got my iPod taken away from for 2 days because my mom found me playing Inkvaders at 2 A.M yesterday. Now all this game needs is Gameloft Live.
