I'm looking to get a pretty decent bang for buck gaming laptop. Right now I'm looking at the Asus G53SX-XA1. I don't wanna go over 1500 Dollars and right now the Asus is looking like a good choice. Anyone have any suggestions? Would like one with a backlit keyboard. I'm getting it mainly to play Ghost Recon Online, Ghost Recon Future Soldier, Saints Row the Third, and Assassin's Creed 3. Will also be using it in a Game Development and Animation course.

I think so yeah, or maybe customise an Alienware one?

I hear the quality of their laptops declined after Dell acquired them. How much of a difference does the RPM on a HDD make? Is there really a noticeable increase in peformance between 5400 and 7200 RPM?

When I had a gaming laptop a couple of years ago, it was from this brand known as Sager and it was a beast. If you go to Notebook review forums and ask for recommendations about a gaming laptop most would recommend a Sager, better than alienware in terms of customisablity and more wallet friendly while not shouting "Steal Me!"

Though I did have some problems with the laptop after 2 years or so with it overheating.

Just checked it out, the vents look pretty dang small. Most likely the reason for the overheating, how noisy is it? And I would appreciate a backlit keyboard. Probably should add that in the OP.

Why's that? Forgot to mention some other details. I'm gonna be getting into a Game Development and Animation course, so I'm assuming I'm gonna need some serious hardware for that. Unless I'm wrong in making that assumption, that's my other reason for getting one.

Unless you absolutely REQUIRE the portability of a laptop for this kind of thing, you're way better off just building a desktop PC that you can keep up to date with simple upgrades.

Yeah I think I'm gonna need the portability of a laptop. Gonna be moving from lab to lab and whatnot. Meh, too many people reporting duds from Asus, gonna customize an Alienware as suggested earlier.

Dunno about their laptops (although I doubt it). I can attest first hand that their desktops are awesome. Best machine I've ever owned. Bought or built.

Hopefully some of that quality leaked over to their laptops. Cause right now, I'm afraid of getting a dud from Asus.

My girlfriend uses an ASUS netbook and her lodget an ASUS laptop. My neighbour also has an ASUS laptop.

All three seem to be very, very good for the price they paid...

I just don't wanna be one of the statistics receiving a dud. It's further complicated by the fact I'm gonna be using a freight forwarder to avoid customs fees and to actually get it to where I am. If I were to get a dud, I would imagine it would be a nightmare to get a replacement. Cause currently Amazon can't send to my area by default. So right now, my choices are to take my chances with Asus or go for Alienware. So far noone's reported a dud from Alienware, just some heating problems when really pushing the M14x. And even the heating problems are subjective. From what I've read so far, Republic of Gamers (Asus' Gaming Series) needs better quality control.
