I agree! I hate having to use the face buttons for aiming in my psp, the lack of a second anolog stick kills my enjoyment! The MC:S control scheme ( an improved BIA control set up) is sweet coz right finger gives you mouselike control over aiming! I hope Gameloft critics here at least gives them credit for this!
Caveat: I hope this doesn't insult my fellow iGamers, who happen to own one of these devices. My bad. I would never ever consider buying a psp or a nintendo ds, under any circumstances, no matter what, because I am all grown up and too old to carry around a toy everywhere I go. I gave up my GI:Joes a long time ago. And, no doubt, the games I have on my iPhone rival anything that you have on your toy device. Add to that the fantastic internet connectivity, email, phone, text, music, music creation software, productivity, calendar, GPS, (not to mention the app store). It becomes clear which device is superior. I use my iPhone to write songs, keep in touch with clients, manage my day to day activities, listen to new music, watch videos and to play awesome games. Ever since I was a little kid I always wanted to own a device like this. It's a pocket sized miniature laptop, with style! It is also the entire point of this forum. I guess what I'm sayin' is, if you think the psp or the ds is superior, you can go ahead and bug off. T.O.
Makes sense what he said, I really can't picture anyone over 15 carrying around and playing a PSP/DS in public and not looking like a total wierdo(other than maybe a college student)
Thats sorta the point isn't it. The controls do work and work very well, probably even better than the PSP/DS for this style of game. If you read the IGN review of MC:S they state as much too. This is what they said:
wow.. I really wanted to read this thread, because I have some questions about this game. But somewhere between page 4 and 5 i got lost. So I tried to at least read the last 3 pages, so my questions wouldn't be stupid, because they were asked before. But by then I found out only 1 on 10 posts is actually about Nova, the others are about some weird PSP vs.DS vs. iD discussion... Kinda weird place to have this discussion in a thread about an particular iPhone game, on an iPhone gaming forum.. but oh well That story was just a big excuse, and a sorry for if this question is asked before... but how do you shoot? Because in wolf 3d (the only fps I have on my iPhone) you have a seperate 'shootbutton'. But isn't the whole deal about fps's that you move and shoot at the same time? Oh, and about the whole copycat-gameloft thing. I don't really care it looks like Halo. I like Halo, and if this comes close, I'm happy It all comes down to this: fake it, till you make it. In the same way that i bought X2 Football, just to get me trough the time I'm waiting for the real deal (FIFA 10). I buy nice games, which i like. If the original comes out on the iPhone I'll buy that one instead. So Bungee, come on with that iPhone port of Halo
The shooting in Modern Combat (which is likely going to be very similar controls to Nova) is handled via an onscreen button, but cleverly you can tap it and hold whilst you drag around to aim. So yes, you can run and shoot and aim all at the same time. In fact, by the time Nova hits the store, Gameloft would have probably improved the controls further. This system was 1st attempted in Brothers in Arms and has been improved a lot since then. 1 thing i'd like the system to do is ignore the accidental fire when I swipe across the shoot button. As for the off-topic posts in this thread, well get used to it. Just about every thread in the upcoming games section (and many in the games section too) gets like this. It sucks, but thats just how TA rolls.
Is spelling 'more' like 'moar' proper English in some other country? I see it a lot here, and it makes me very afraid that these people are likely public school students in the US. Unable to spell simple, single syllable words. I realize English can differ radically depending where it's spoken, but something tells me these people don't deserve the benefit of doubt.
*Realise Nah, only joking, lol. I don't mind if you Americans take our language then twist it then try to correct me because I used the real English spelling rather than the US English spelling (You wouldn't believe how many people have tried to correct me on Youtube). But yeah, I agree with what you have said. I personally find the use of 'txt tlk' in e-mails, forums etc. Why use 'text talk' when you have a keyboard? I don't even use 'text talk' when texting. Why? Because I have an iPhone with a virtual keyboard .
Folks is there anyway we can talk ONLY about the game after this point? If you have to talk console wars or express loathing for Gameloft cloning, do it in another thread.
Thanks guys for the support. It's great to hear. (And, today is a day I need it like no other BTW .) I will never tire of defending this device, because seriously, it's the HammmJammm. The BeesKnees. The CreamoftheCrop and the top of the top. I love my iPhone. But, let's take this thread right back to OnTopic. Gameloft has done a ton toward addressing and advancing the problems with touch controls and has advanced the graphics further than I would have thought possible. As evidenced by Modern Combat: Sandstorm. Ad Infinitum. Based on the success rate of this company Nova is easily another first day purchase for me. The new game engine has taken iGaming to another level and I'm afraid other companies are probably in need of diapers right about now. Happily for me, my fun quotient just went way up! T.O.
There has to be at least ONE environmental gimmick to make it a true Halo clone for multiplayer. Vehicles, mancannons, gravity lifts, one way barriers, portals, gates etc as well as interesting maps make the game more than just running towards each other firing. Wish there were more than 5 weapons though, a rocket launcher and dashing melee weapon would have been cool. When this game releases I'll let everyone here get access to my Halo soundtracks, so you can sync it to your iDevice iTunes and then select it in the game to get that Halo experience! Hell, Mass Effect too (including hidden soundtracks)
Whenever you press fire and your gun is empty, you should click on an empty barrel normally but automatically melee with the gun butt if an enemy is in front of you. This will give you a reflexive chance if you're surprised until you can bring up the menu to change weapons, and eliminates the need for a designed melee V-button. Yeah, but, well... that's Eliminate, I've lost interest in that. Plus it's not actually out yet - until then the only games I find useful to compare and contrast with Nova are Modern Combat and Halo.
