Serious question, two years from now when we're on the iPhone 5G are we still going to be bickering about whether or not Gameloft is copying other games or will everyone have gotten it out of their system by then?
Word of advice to myself being an accountant and staring at numbers for five hours get up and walk away before posting anything to touch arcade forums. Yes the game is coming holiday season 2009. For some reason I have the year 2010 in my mind. Probably because in accounting year end is right around the corner.
You know Eli. Instead of sitting back and laughing at how this thread has become a joke of a thread. You could have chimed in at any moment and put an end to this bickering....
No. Instead I'll start another debate on how Apple has come out with iPhone 5G too soon. And naysayers aside, I'll again point out higher profit margins on older hardware as costs decrease, longer life cycles being more beneficial for both developers and Apple's bottom line, and consumers on the whole being happy with their iPhones so Apple needed not play the "one up" game every year or two against the Nokia's, Palm's and Blackberries of the world due to no real fear of a mass exodus of install base to competitors. Seriously now. Apple doesn't need to massively upgrade the internal hardware every two years to compete. Every 4 or so years I can see, as it makes the most business sense for reasons I've outlined. ... Whoops. See, Eli? You got me started, two years early. Bad Eli...bad.
That would've spoiled his fun. See how we went back to discussing the game and that's when he decided to comment about the debate on Gameloft? He's a wolf in sheep's clothing, that Hodapp. Gotta watch out for him.
I really hope gameloft gets it out of their system by then...that would be REALLY lame if they were still at it two years from now lmao. EDIT: yeah eli, why'd you drag it out so long?
Damn, I really hope Sega gets something more out by that time. Not just a emulated Sonic game that runs like crap for that matter on the idevices.
Sega, well Super monkey ball, as hard as it is, is still a gorgeous iphone game, and they did that more than a year ago. But I think they'll just keep cramming old genesis games into their shitty emulator. At least until the Mega Drive is re-released.
True. SMB was one of the hardest games I've ever gone through. Till this day I still have nightmares about the last 30 levels.
Next time I will calibrate my alarm clock to wake me up when Gameloft's honor needs to be defended. Seriously though, people love bashing Gameloft just like they love bashing ngmoco, there's not much you can do to prevent it. Every Gameloft game thread has the exact same argument, I guess people just like repeating themselves. edit: Also, no one reported this thread, so no mods had much reason to follow it once it descended in to the standard Gameloft argument.
Yes, "defend their honor" that's a poor choice of words. I'll assume you know the definition of the word, so I'll not post a link. It's funny, if they had any "honor" to defend i'd be right there with you. (a bit dramatic, I know)
So true. Honestly, if people still can't see that this is Gameloft's angle (for the time being), and keep acting surprised and getting pissed off every time they release a new "clone", then this argument will keep popping up in Gameloft threads. I personally see where both sides are coming from. On one hand, Gameloft is a big time Dev, and therefore has the time, money, and manpower to potentially develop games with at least somewhat original ideas. On the other hand, the iDevice platform doesn't currently have any other "major" devs who are willing to release one big title after another (granted pretty much all those titles look suspiciously like existing games on other platforms). For the time being, I personally don't have a problem with all these Gameloft "clones". Until other major devs decide they want a piece of the iDevice gaming market, the Gameloft section is currently the only place in the App Store to find a God of War/COD/GTA/Soul Calibur style game.
This should be for a separate thread, but don't you, arn and others think it might be a great cover story to actually interview Gameloft about their intentions? Why not ring them up and ask them if they are doing this just to fund original IPs next year, or are they deliberately trying to show proof of concept and destroy certain myths as to what can and can't work on the iPhone? I personally think the latter is more true, and I'm sure if you ask them face to face, they'll finally come out and admit it.
Unfortunately, when you deal with large companies like Gameloft, their responses to things like that are often limited to what they're allowed to discuss or extremely calculated PR responses that don't actually tell you a whole lot. You're right that it would make an interesting story, but the only things Gameloft are ever willing to talk about are games they have to preview. As you can see, the games that they show us are often very close to release so there's not much you can infer from that to what they're doing in the future. I've asked our Gameloft contacts thing like this in the past and they either have no comment, or an off the record response that barely includes more information than "no comment".
I hope Nova uses open gl es 2.0 so we can start seeing exclusive games for the Iphone 3GS and Ipod Touch 3rd Generation.
lol this is still going on! Alright in any event Nova the aliens attack fps so far sounds pretty nifty. I wonder what kind of locals the dozen stages will bring us. I think a few will be forested and maybe even urban Not sure what the Push notification is all about? Would that be for if someone you know sends you an invite for multiplayer? Oh voice chat?! That would be odd though one would think... at least I think it's weird. Would be nice if they have vehicles but not 'ride on the back with just a big gun' sort of ride. I'd like to drive it
Okay, how about another angle, asking Bungie, Namco, Infinity Ward etc how they like these clones, and does it inspire them to bring their official stuff to the iPhone?
I'd actually really like to read that! However I'm sure they're just as tight lipped as Hodapp, hinted gameloft is. Most big companies tip toe their way through interviews, and the like. Why say something you may regret later, when "no comment" works so well
Yep. When we had a conference call with Namco they wouldn't talk about ANYTHING that didn't have to do with the purpose of the call, which I think was Pac Man? It's just how these companies work. Something a lot of App Store gamers aren't used to, having dealt with so many of these indie devs who are more than willing to post detailed development logs of everything they're working on. Big companies won't even send you preview versions most of the time, if you want to try their games you fly to their offices.
Yeah we have gotten rather spoiled haven't we. These devs have embraced the community with open arms, and so we often forget that the big studio's are no where near as forthcoming. Probably a smart move business wise though. I've noticed that pandering to every whim of a digital audience, certainly has the potential for disaster.
