exactly. the thing is, no big publishers cared before gameloft. gameloft has always been "mobile mobile mobile" with 3d BREW games etc. they stick their heads in and make "rip-offs" that aren't as "high-quality" as what's out there because the big publishers aren't putting things on the iphone.

    here's a list:
Hero of Sparta - God of War (yes I know...)
Dungeon Hunter - umm..every dungeon game
    BIA 2 - CoD, MoH ww2 games
    Modern Combat - same
    NOVA - Halo
    Rayman - just awesome

If the big publishers won't fill the void, then why shouldn't Gameloft?

As far as engines go, you don't need to fully redo the engine for every game, that's ridiculous. What you need is good STORY and ACTION writers! Seriously!!! The reason they all feel the same is because they all ARE mostly the same, just in different settings. Give us a Deus Ex with that nice 3D engine!

At least BIA2 shows a trend in that direction. People riff it for poor single-player but honestly its a lot better campaign than modern warfare or NOVA imo (yes I said better than NOVA now its time for a "writingsama sucks" section). It's a step in the right direction.

They are a publishing company, they are also the leading influence on idevice gaming, and idevice game developing. Though they have gained the support of many from the Rayman 2 port, they didn't develop it, they just ported are published it to idevice app stores. The idea that their games are rip-offs is totally untrue, the majority of their games are averagly priced, but their popular releases are priced higher because they need money to stay in buisness.
So stop complaining and go pay $30 for a average game on the leading mobile gaming consoles, when you could get a quality game for $0.99-$4.99 on a idevice.

No going to get into the whole "they bring the games big publishers don't" argument because, well, it's old. But I agree about BIA2 being a big step up for them story-wise (and, yes, more entertaining than NOVA). Keep in mind, though, that BIA is a Ubisoft franchise; calling it a ripoff is like calling Call of Duty a ripoff of Medal of Honor.

just 'cuz it's old doesn't mean it isn't true...

I think Gameloft's biggest contribution was controls. NOVA really proved an FPS could work well, and FPSes are the last 'hard core' thing the iphone 'couldn't do'.

yeah BIA is an ubisoft franchise, true...and all the big publisher games are ripoffs of each too...BIA was only famous when it came out 'cuz it was the first game with a decent 'cover system' (I hate that idea/word)

BTW trivia: the original BIA was a port of a BREW game (like for Verizon Wireless), that's why it kind of blew somewhat compared to BIA2

I agree some of their games suck, to name some AC2, all BIA games, and gangstar. They should only stick to remastering the classics like Rayman and Earthworm jim, etc.

AC2 is not Gameloft (and it's awesome -- so there). You already know what I think about BIA2. Can't disagree about Gangstar. And yeah, their classics ports have so far been great, though they have to figure out how to auto-save on them.

Gangstar was a strange move. They took an existing 2d game and slapped a 3d engine on it.

OK...but...why? It seems once the engine was in place it would've been very easy to update the content a lot...like add planes and helicopters and more city and stuff...it would've been awesome. WTF gameloft? WTF? Why go through ALL the trouble of completely changing the graphics engine (which is a HUGE overhaul) from 2d to 3d and not do that?

The only thing that sucks about Gameloft is the voice acting and the storylines

Earthworm Jim is awful. BIA, AC2, and gangstar are awesome.

Remember though...it was revolutionary at the time. Now, in the light of GTA, people think it's amateurish-but at the time of release, it was expanding the frontiers, testing the limits of what the app store could do

Ya. People just love to pick on Gameloft because it is the leader, One of the best developers on the app store. It's fun to hate the big, important companies for some people. Same mentality as hating a Walmart.

I didn't play many iPhone games so i can't say anything about earlier games but i got an iPad and being a former diablo addict dungeon hunter was the first game I purchased. The controls were easy to use and responsive, the graphics were quite polished and the over all game play was extremely enjoyable. If there is a better diablo style game for the iPad I would love to hear about it. NOVA on the other hand had bad controls and was a pain to play.

I still can't see why people sat GL games suck. If it weren't for them the iPhone wouldn't be where it is now in terms of gaming. In all honesty I hate haters.
