I finally picked this game up. I had been a bit hesitant since I've never played this type of game, but I've been intrigued after reading all of the good reviews. Plus I always enjoyed choose your own adventure books as a kid. Now I just need to find the time to play this.
So wait...you can or you can't resume your game at any point? You don't have to finish in three sessions, right?
You can resume at any time, the bookmarks are just points that you can revert the game to if you mess up.
Alright guys, went ahead and bought it due to the recommendations from Spork and Vovin... I hope the writing is good. I am kind of a snob as far as books go, however I did enjoy Deathtrap Dungeon despite it's not being exactly "high literature" but it's easy for me to overlook that because dungeon crawling is basically my favorite pastime. Anyway, I'm just hoping there will be some decent characters and a good plot. I am pretty confident it will deliver. I'll let you know what I think once I've gotten a chance to play/read it a bit. Now then, no more new apps for me for AT LEAST a few days!
Shoosh! It's Sunday afternoon here and I don't think I'll be buying anything until at least...probably when Zenonia 2 goes live...I think I need to go to iPhone rehab.
Well, don't be sad. You are in quite good company here. Ask.... uhm.... everyone. And if you think you are addicted, well, take a look here: http://forums.toucharcade.com/group.php?groupid=14&pp=10&page=5 It can always be worse. I deleted my credit card information in iTunes and started buying iTunes gift cards, btw. - a 25€ card (must be like 35 bucks) every month. That's my allowance on the AppStore, I got used to it and can live with it now... no problem anymore. My first the iTunes bills were at 100$ each...
The writing quality is probably the highest I've seen in a Gamebook or Choose Your Own Adventure. It's not classic literature, but it's an enormous step up from the Fighting Fantasy books, with a far more interesting and original plot. And there is a little bit of dungeon crawling too.
See, had I but known this I would have bought it long ago! Played for a short time, it's actually quite...wordy, I guess, compared to Deathtrap Dungeon. That's not a bad thing. I do get the impression that this is more for readers than the Fighting Fantasy series.
Yeah, I really appreciate the "wordiness." It's incredibly descriptive, which really helps to establish this world as something that they can continue to use and expand upon throughout the series. That's my understanding of their plans anyway, I believe that the forthcoming books are all set in the same world, which strikes me as very cool.
Yeah, I like that concept. Done right, it could be something really special. I really want to like this so I can get the next one, which seems to be about a necromancer. Necromancing is one of my favorite topics.
I must be missing something here. I just started to read the book, and made it a short ways in. I then decided to go back to the main menu to re-read the fighting rules. When I returned to the book, it started me back at the very beginning. Even reading in a few pages, hitting the "Home" button, and returning to the book, I was still put back at the beginning. I was under the impression that it would automatically save my progress (not including the 3 bookmarks). Am I wrong here? Is progress only saved at specific points?
After playing this game for a couple of days now, I can officially say that I am a huge fan now. I haven't gotten to the ultimate ending, yet. But I think I know how -- first I need to find a couple of items, and I am sure that is easier said than done. I won't hesitate to buy game books you guys release in the future.
I'm in the same boat - any future Gamebook Adventures and Fighting Fantasy releases are on my insta-buy list - I want to see more gamebooks for the platform!
I haven't tried the Fighting Fantasy series, yet. I might at some point, but I definitely got the impression that this book was much better. Maybe I'll be too spoiled now. Oh, and I just found what I was looking for, so I restarted the story to see if I can get the ultimate run-through. I must say the storyline has been fantastic - kudos to the writer!
Fighting Fantasy books are less of a storyline and more of a dungeon crawl, but they're still fun, just keep in mind that they were written some 30 years ago. I just think that this series shows incredible promise right from the get-go, with a much more interesting storyline and actual characters. The world is also much more detailed and "real" feeling.
What he said. GA is much more polished, and I love the incidentals such as collecting the "off the beaten path" bits. That being said, the two Fighting Fantasy books are $2 each right now, and are well worth it. I don't know what the next ones will be, but I've been told they are committed to at least 5 books. I'd love to see some of the non-medieval setting books. Back to GA: looking forward to The Siege of the Necromancer, which I'm hoping will be out soon!
