Telltale's got a pretty spotty track record on updating their iOS apps in recent years, even if they're nearly broken like Poker Night 2. It may happen but I sure wouldn't count on it.
Just finished this (first episode, obviously) off and I'm not quite sure how I feel about it. It's definitely "more" Game of Thrones and I enjoyed the hell out of it (and of course the ending has me hooked and waiting for the next episode), but what if I wasn't a Game of Thrones fan? I, to this day, haven't seen a single episode of Walking Dead nor have I read a single comic, yet the Telltale games are like "[PWALFHDFKJG OMG THIS IS THE GREATEST THING EVER" to me...yet, here I am thanking Odin I follow GoT, otherwise I'd have no ****ing clue what is going on.
The obvious assumption here is that everyone knows and loves GoT, which leaves folk like me out in the cold. It's fine though, I'll enjoy the Borderlands game and hopefully TWAU Episode 2.
It is wild how this game isn't inclusive at all to people who don't know the IP. I'm just like you guys, I had never heard of the Fable series before Wolf Among Us, but I liked that game enough that I've thought about reading the graphic novels. I guess they made the assumption everyone knows Game of Thrones, so, whatever. I guess we'll see if it makes a difference in the sales of this game, I sort of doubt it will because as I mentioned before, few things are hotter than Game of Thrones right now.
Well, I just bought the game and the season pass, haven't seen a single episode, and now I'm just gonna hold off altogether until I'm completely caught up and have a clue of what's going on. Kind of sad that I have to do that, as I wouldn't watch the show if it weren't somewhat of a prerequisite of getting the full experience from this game.
I'm playing on PS4 and while I've only briefly looked I think there is a lore/extras section with some information (but could be wrong as I only quickly saw a couple of character bios). Even if you've watched the TV series or read the books, there are so many factions and events it would really be hard to know what's going on all the time. The IP is huge and to think that there could be a quick round up of things is probably due to not being familiar with it, it would be virtually impossible and an encyclopaedia in itself. While you are going to enjoy this more if you know the IP, it's no different than the series in that they don't always walk you through everything. It would spoil the tension if they did.
Wow, this game ran out of steam on the forums before it ever got off the ground. I figured this would be one of those "zillion posts" threads like Ashphalt 8 or Infinity Blade 3. Is this game lacking compared to other Telltale games like say TWD2 or TWAU? If so, in what areas??
Not at all. The game's bloody fantastic...it's just that you've gotta be familiar with shit before you play it. While this thread may not be doing fantastically, the game itself is doing insanely good on the paid charts.
Other than a few kinks that should be worked out (slow framerate during the most frantic segments, hickups with the sound), I think Telltale produced yet another wonderful game! The dialogue works beautifully, successfully characterizing and letting us grow fond of the new characters and making the most out of the guest stars; the oil-painting visuals are perfectly suited for the quasi-medieval setting of ASOIAF; and, most important of all with a Telltale game, the choices are suitably tough (if I ever needed proof that I'm not tough enough to play the Game of Thrones, this should drive the point home!). Also, I love love LOVE that Telltale managed to include the TV show's intro and theme song! The only downside I see here, other than the technical issues, is that, like has been said before, the game heavily relies on the player already being a fan of the property. Now, make no mistake: Game of Thrones is highly political, so it's still possible for a player who's not familiar with the ASOIAF universe to be able to follow the Forresters' plight by piecing some stuff together and understanding the logic behind some of the choices and plot points present. However, the elements that make its universe come together require some explanation, either to fully appreciate the importance of events (ie. Why is a "Red Wedding" such a big deal?) or to understand what some stuff is and what part they play in the larger scheme of things (ie. What is the Wall? Why is it bad to be sent there? What do people do there?). tldr: People coming in fresh might be able to grasp the importance of the game's events in its own bubble, but a lot of information contingent on previous familiarity will fly right over their heads. That's what makes the game tougher to recommend that TWD or TWAU. If you like ASOIAF/GOT, then you'll almost certainly get a kick out of playing the 'Game of Thrones' yourself; if you know nothing about the property, just know beforehand that there's a LOT of references that you probably won't get unless you actually read the books or watch the TV show. Speaking only for myself, I couldn't be happier with what we've got! If the technical issues I mentioned could be fixed in a future upgrade, that'd make this game perfect for me!
I only turned it on for a few seconds so far, when do you get to hear the opening theme song, certainly for me I did not see it before the game play started. Also I think sooner or later, and maybe they do so with the Borderlands series, Telltale needs to add some thing different to spice these games up a bit more. Maybe it is just me, but I started to get bored during TWD series even though what they do is well done.
Also for those of you who want to know more before playing... http://gameofthrones.wikia.com/wiki/Game_of_Thrones_Wiki
The show's intro will only play once you get through the game's initial sequence. That's, I'd say, maybe 10 minutes into the game.
Again not played on iOS but I'd give it a 4 out 5, 1 point off for the hand keyed animations and some poor areas visually, otherwise great game. They did really well capturing what makes GoT great.
With the newest update, it seems like the game's framerate has improved considerably. I can't speak as to any improvements during QTE-heavy sections (I'm in King's Landing at the moment), but the quieter scenes play much better and without those hick-ups I and others complained about. Seldom have I been so happy with an update (sans actual new content)!
Is anyone playing this with a MFi controller? Most of the time it works fine, but for some reason certain functions don't work. Like moving the character around with the left stick is fine, but when I walk up to the white circles on a person or object, I still need to use the touch screen because no action button comes up. During conversations if I turn the Stratus XL off and back on I get the A, B, X, Y choices for answers and then two questions later it reverts back to using the touchscreen with the button prompts for the controller nowhere to be seen. For example in the scene I'm on just now, Mira at Kings Landing after Ethan commands that his brother be found and brought back home, Mira is in Marjorie's quarters and stating at two objects on the table, both have white circles to examine them. When I turn the controller off and back on I briefly see a little cross hair in the centre of the screen but it disappears within seconds. I take it this crosshairs is what I should be able to move onto an object with a white circle and press the action button to examine. The controller isn't fully disconnecting, I can press pause via the start button and even when walking around areas with my character the left stick works fine and but I need to use the touch screen to activate white highlighted objects or people. Odd. I've also bought the remaining episodes for £13.99, may as well put one of my Christmas iTunes cards to use!
Can't wait for the next episode. I've never seen the show although it's now in my streaming queue. Very typical of a Telltale game. You either are ok with them or not. I let some things slide & just enjoy the game for what it is. Doing that I loved this first step in the series. A sound glitch sure, an illuminated graphic you bet, but overall this is what I hoped it would be. Fun to play. Good gameplay. Strong story & from the most part well done. Did I enjoy every minute & become sad as I realized the episode was going to end yes. To me that's the sign I'm looking for. That I want more despite any flaws I may have seen or heard. I felt the same way with other Telltale games like TWD, TWAU, TFTB, & dare I say Jurassic. So hurry up GOT episode 2.
IPhone 5s with Apple TV and AirPlay. Works perfectly. Note: AirPlay was crashing my iPad 3 at regular intervals with this game.
The show is amazing and stays pretty close to the books, except that being HBO they have to porn it up in order to air it.
