I'm familar with voluntary response bias and understand not everyone owns every game on the poll. However, in measurement theory error is random (so error will disperse equally in both +/- directions with an insignificant net movement). Even if we entertain your points that you feel GOTY should be a contest purely of game content/mechanics but is instead skewered by marketing & game avaliability this poises a problem in this example. If anything Mission Europa's sales suggest that it's more likely to be hampered by popular opinion polls than helped (especially compared to Tiny Wings).
I think we have a clear GOTY winner in the first quarter if this trend continues till 13th April. Congrats Ryan.
Exactly, the fans of games like TW aren't being represented here. It's always the same guys voting in threads like these. The fans of ME are looking for some way to promote the game here, and this is all they can do since convincing Hodapp to write a review hasn't gone too well. That theory on error/randomness would be true in an ideal situation. This isn't it. And also, the sample size is much too small.
What are you basing this on? This is an open poll. I don't understand the theory that a small group of people who've played Mission Europa have become rabid with glee subsequently ploting to overthrow the GOTY poll to market a game whose sales give them no personal benefit. Hodapp suggested that 20 people have been most active in Mission Europa thread; even if we discounted those 20 votes (which we can't because they are valid opinions) Mission Europa would still have a relatively high number of votes. However, the fact that Paladog! is omitted does suggest something is amiss. Small sample sizes do suggest other factors can have a greater effect on the bottom line but sampling error should center around the true population opinion within a margain. There is an 8% (12 point) margin between Mission Europa (1st place) and Dead Space (2nd space). An 8% tally is probably large enough to suggest improper sampling is not a factor.
Look. Once a survey has been affected by voluntary response bias, there's no fix for the error already committed. Only the people who have a motive or strong feelings would have voted. Like I said, when people can choose if they wish to respond or not, there's no way to count the poll as valid.
Voted Dead Space. Great game! Tried out Mission Europa and it's really fun and quite addicting. Would definitely recommend it, but I would place it behind Dead Space, Battleheart, NBA Jam, and Tiny Wings, at the least. Congrats to Ryan on the hardwork!
i don't understand how the game of the year so far can't be tiny wings. i mean sure it might not be the best game for the hardcore players, but in terms of mass appealand sales, no other games matches. plus the gameplay imo is actually pretty fun and addicting. i don't think any other game so far can say that. on top of all that, you have an indie success story, so my vote goes out to tiny wings
You said it i don't care if it is number one on the appstore for ten years i like a game that is fun and i like playing i think dead space and mission europa offer more fun than tiny wings
"game of the year" symblizes alot more things than fun. as an extremely exaggerated example, you can have one game that is 10 times as fun as another game, but it only gets 1 sale. the other game gets 1000 times more sales but is maybe half as fun. the second game gets goty. i will say that some of the other games on the list are imo more fun compared to tiny games, but none of them achieved success to as much people as tiny wings did. i realize that i may not think tiny wings is the most fun, but when taking into account all of the other people who would say tiny wings is the funneset game, my vote would have to go to tiny wings. anyways, i would like to bring up, based on the first post, how exactly did mission europa even get into the poll? the op said he took the game of the months that were reviewed by ta, and based on hodapps comments, i'm pretty sure it wasn't one of the games?
It's just my personal judgment based on the sense of angry birds' success. Marketing not important at all, I think the point is we have been enjoying it and didn't waste our hard earned money.
Although I agree on an emotional level, the logical part of me says that Dungeon Raid came out in November 2010 so is not eligible. Dungeon Raid is insane.
No, those are the ones posting, there are far more voters than there are people arguing over ME's worth
+1 I just wrote a six paragraph essay on this, but because of the iPhones crazy keyboarding I pressed done and next thread on accident, oh well
It's just with that awesome new update, it felt like a fresh brand new game, even though I've owned it since day one in November. As far as the Tiny Wings conversation goes, I agree that game came out of nowhere, required zero marketing and with flat out cuteness rocketed to the top of the charts. No matter how my day is going, I can fire it up and within a minute, I'm smiling. Not many games, if any others at all can do that. When I make a poor move and the bird says "Caca", I lose it everytime! I haven't played Hot Springs Story, but I don't have to as I know it's really good. I remember laughing at Gamedev Story thinking how dumb the game must be. Then I bought it. Oh the geeky fun I ended up having was priceless. P.S. NO LOL'ing at my game name in the pics below. (ok you can)
Haha, haven´t tried Tiny Wings yet, as I´m not a huge fan of Angry Birds either. How would you rank Tiny Wings in comparison to Angry Birds?
That's what I think so too . Although I loved the exclusivity when there was only 1 AB game , tiny wings certainly isn't better than AB . At best , it is on the same level . I would like to introduce Gold and Chocolate to you guys . This is my GOTY for the first quarter .
