Lemme just tell u something creepshow, if ME wins goty at the end of 2011, it will get great recognition despite what others say about the game and even if TA doesn't like the game (in which I totally respect u guys if u don't like the game). I think dungeon defenders got amazing responses since it was using the unreal engine, plus it was on the front page of TA which gave it even more recognition. ME didn't get much of review.
There are a few members here that love you. On subject, WoG should be great, possibly the best all year (for iPhone and iPod Touch that is, S&S for the iPad may be better than WoG for the iPhone).
Ya if there are only a few people that like ME, how did it win the first quarter goty thread? (sry nothing against u backtothis)
All in the list are pretty awesome, hard to settle my vote. If have to, I vote Tiny Wing for appreciating its successful marketing brought us oodles of fun
Honestly, I don't think Tiny Wings had ANY marketing at all until much later after securing #1 on the charts. Even though I didn't vote for it, I think this fact alone should make Tiny Wings much higher than its current fifth place positioning in this poll.
There's a really long explanation involving basic statistics behind the answer to that, but I'll spare you.
I don't see what ME is all about at all. Yeah I'll give credit to one guy for making a bunch of content for the fans, but it's one of the most overrated forum buzzers I've seen on here next to Aralon. It's not because of graphics or polish, it's just...bad. And to those insulting DD, that's an awful argument. Trendy entertainment consist of around 3 or 4 developers who made a he'll of a game that was plagued by mistakes. Also one of the biggest issues is that content DOES NOT equal quality. Like I said Aralon and ME. I'd rather have a 4 hour joy ride than a 50 hour crap show just saying.
I thought Aralon was pretty cool, although I'm only 15 minutes in LOL, but yeah, everything else sounds about right!
Lol nothing against u man I dont mind that u don't like ME cuz I'm not a fanboy and plus it's ur opinion not mine
Overrated is probably the most abused word in gaming (right up there with "horrible). Let's just make one thing clear -- just because you don't like something as much as someone else, it doesn't mean it's "overrated." It just means that you don't like something as much as someone else. But perhaps I'm giving you too much credit. Maybe you do believe that there are people here on TA who enjoy "50 hour crap shows." If that's the case, the only reasonable response is "f*ck you, buddy." You're a lost cause. On the whole Mission Europa/TA review thing: it seems to me the height of unreasonableness to expect everyone to love something like ME. In many ways the game is designed to have a cult following. Personally, I've been enjoying it for what it is, but I can easily see why other folks would dismiss it. I certainly don't expect Hodapp et al to give a game that they don't like space on the front page. (Dungeon Defender was a special case, I think, because of the whole Unreal Engine angle). Back on topic, there are a lot of great games on that list, but let me give a not to one that isn't: Tactical Soldier: Undead Rising. As far as I can tell, the title introduces an original sub-genre -- tactical turn-based horror -- and manages to do so with a polished game that looks, sounds, and plays really well.
Same here, about 15 minutes in and it just sat on my device for a month... Deleted. Paladin came out and I gave it a good solid try once again. This time 10 minutes tops. I want to love it, honestly...
Don't sleep on NBA Jam and Death Rally, in another quarter they could have taken it, they are really well polished. As for GOTY so far... it's between Dead Space and Tiny Wings. Other games on iOS give you that console experience and you appreciate the work, but Dead Space was the first game that completely made me forget there was even a line between iOS and console gaming. The atmosphere is convincingly surreal and even chilling in that game. It takes a hell of a game to mind**** me but this game sure did the job. Who knew EA had it in 'em? It certainly started them off guns blazing in the Appstore market for 2011. And Tiny Wings... how could that NOT be mentioned. While half my time here is spend enjoying the games that are already out, the other half of enjoyment I get here is discovering new developers drawn to this platform. So imagine my surprise when a game pops out of nowhere and literally skyrockets into mass appeal based on nothing but word of mouth alone. When last have you seen that? No marketing, no promotion. The game was charting and seeping in gaming pop culture before most media outlets were even aware it existed - I've never seen anything like that before on iOS, and on traditional consoles it would be practically impossible. So those two games herald the banner of an incredible 3 first months of 2011.
To each his own i guess, it´s great that the App Store now features Games for every type of gamer. We´ve had enough casual crap being released over the years. Speaking about ME, I´ve put 10 hours into the game so far without getting bored even once. ME is very similar to the original Diablo, with the difference of it being played in a 3D ego perspective environment and with a hell lot of more items to fool around with. I couldn´t care less if one or 100 guys have brought this project to the light of day, for me it´s a fun and unique game on the iDevice. And this is exactly the reason why i feel my money has been well spent. Nothing more, nothing less. Besides, I´m sure if Blizzard would decide to release the first Diablo on iOS, you guys would be head over heels for it, even praising it with a long review. Mission Europa on the other hand, it doesn´t have a big name attached to it, so it´s barely recognized even if it´s a better game at some aspects. It does need some polish, yes, but it´s great at the core. Let´s see what Ryan can do with this Arena Update. I agree, this should be in the list together with City Of Secrets. Ahh, so many great games are coming out lately and so little time.
Ugh. We posted about Dungeon Defenders because even though the game was terrible (and seemingly hasn't improved in many meaningful ways since then despite being version 5.0) it was an incredibly groundbreaking title. It had potential to be the first Unreal Engine 3 game to hit the App Store, but instead ended up being shuffled out of the App Store just a little bit later than Infinity Blade. Add that on top of the fact that it had complete online multiplayer at launch, and was basically an identical (to its fault) game to the console counterpart... on your phone. Subsequent posts since then have been because they added cross platform multiplayer, which is very rare for any iOS game. Recently, although admittedly they likely did very little on their end because the UE3 is so versatile, they announced that the game utilizes the full capabilities of the iPad 2... So, we posted about that since there again are so few games that did that. I would have loved to have taken a pass on Dungeon Defenders. I didn't think it was a good game when we reviewed it, and I still don't think it's a good game now. Regardless, it's hard to argue that it isn't incredibly noteworthy because of the reasons above. Mission Europa doesn't have those kind of things you can say about it, short of maybe "it was made by one guy" but I'd go as far as to say that most iOS games are made by one guy. If not one guy, then an incredibly small team. I'm glad you guys are loving it, but any review on TouchArcade would result in a resounding "do not buy this game." We're not in the business of slamming developers and killing sales by giving harsh and negative reviews for (reasonably) unheard of games that people don't really have a reason to be warned about.
Exactly why I've moved on to other sites for iOs game reviews, I like a more "well rounded" site that reviews games that push the format, for good or bad. It's not that you didn't review ME and give it a glowing review, it's that you won't review it at all that makes me scratch my head. Other sites review Angry Birds and games like Mission Europa. But hey that Smuggle Truck update article was quite gripping!
What about Mission Europa "pushes the format?" Is it the clunky UI, the horrible tutorial system, the needless complication of virtually every gameplay element, models that are so low-polygon that it's difficult to even determine what things are supposed to be? ...Or is it just the fact that it was made by one guy? At the end of the day, TouchArcade is a game discovery site. We act as a filter for the App Store, allowing people to just check the site, get an idea of what they should try, and go from there. Unless a game is high profile or we have reason to pan it, we just move on to something more interesting that fits in with the kind of content we're trying to provide to our readers. If you prefer other review sites that get their jollies by choosing a horrible game out of the blue and stating the obvious by telling you it's terrible, then by all means, read those sites.
Game journalist extraordinaire here folks!!! How/why people think you have any credibility after reading statements like this is beyond me!
Ah I see the game we're playing here. Disregard valid points for cheap shots about journalistic integrity. Let me know how that works for you. I'm sorry that TouchArcade isn't what you want it to be, but we're the #1 iPhone site for a reason... And that reason is because we provide content people want to read.
