I vote for BattleHeart, simply because it brought something new to iOS gaming. A good fighting system to multi/micro manage party fighting.
Despite sharing a developer Necromancer Rising and Mission Europa can't really be directly compared. Although you can tell from Mission Europa screenshots it's still an "ugly" game the mechanics are greatly improved controling more like a traditional first person shooter (aka NOVA). Regardless Mission Europa might not be for you and it's price is steep to test but it is vastly different from Necromancer Rising. It's leading in the poll so consensus is that it's worth a recommendation but to each his own.
Oh okay, I understand. Well, I have decided to buy Mission Europa. Just one more question... The $9.99 or $3.99 version?
City Of Secrets..Nuff Said...Well ok not quite,of those on the list Dead Space, but as i will vote other as in City Of Secrets, that won't be getting my vote... Dunno how M.E is leading the poll, whilst i applaud the developer and the time spent making the game,it's just shockingly ... Nuff said now, well ok not quite,i can see why T.A haven't covered it as those of you ''fans'' on here think it should of been covered, but's that's just one opinion,as everyone's differ. Maybe if M.E dev had bought some ad space,as that seems to work for a lot of lesser games on here,no-one has heard of before.Maybe a bad choice tho as that money would probably only go towards some of T.A's staffs weekly jaunts across the US of A and world
Just wait till Swords and Sworcery EP gets released on iPhone/iPod touch, maybe then the real game of the year so far will take it's spot at the top of this poll.
We covered its launch- http://toucharcade.com/2011/03/16/necromancer-rising-goes-free-to-celebrate-launch-of-mission-europa/ Buying advertising has nothing to do with editorial coverage. Advertising is so far removed from TouchArcade that I don't even find out or know who is advertising when and where until the actual ads show up on the site. I know you guys like harping on the fact that it was made by one person, but lots of games were made by one person. That doesn't mean we automatically like them, or will review them.
I think the reason people often mention "one man" for this particular game is due to the sheer size of it being a lot of one person to accomplish.
I guess my point is all the people who are incessantly spamming any text box on the site angry that we're not reviewing Mission Europa need to understand that "made by one person" isn't a metric that earns an automatic review on every iOS media outlet.
The reason many people (including me) are disappointed is Touch Arcade is not giving a great game the attention it deserves. If nobody tries to spread how good it is, it becomes the "best-game-no-one-played", which would be a shame. Being a "made by one person" game is just a plus, not the main motive at all, and suggesting that just disqualifies the massive positive reviews ME has been given by gamers til now.
Blake, Brad, Jared, and I have clocked in a total of around 12 hours into the game between the four of us which is considerably more than we usually give a game we're not crazy about. I'm glad you guys are loving it, but I just don't see it.
I bet you 50% of the buyers, bought it because of crazy content and one man team. The game is good I agree, but not great. Lacks overall polish imo
Don't want the people here to flame me, but I don't either. I've clocked a total of 75 minutes into the game (says the load file), and sadly to say, I think it's probably the worst premium priced game I've been graced with so far on the AppStore in these 2 and a half years. Just my opinion. I'd rather be playing a good iOS RPG or FPS, not a hybrid of the two in the fashion presented in ME. Like Epox said, the polish isn't there. Actually, there's none at all. I'm not saying I'm expecting state of the art graphics and sound; I'm saying this game runs and plays like crap in general from what I've seen so far. There's a reason the game didn't get any attention, and no, it's not just because it was priced at $9.99. To go even further than that, I have no doubt in my mind that a big part of the general opinion on the game here is biased due to interactions with the developer. He's definitely a hard-working and nice guy, but that really shouldn't affect how people see a game. Also, I know some of you also are biased due the fact that the game was created by one person and are impressed by how much content the game has. Fact is, it really doesn't matter how long a game is. I bought Dead Space on the first day, and I finished the game the next. It's no doubt the best three hour experience I've had on the iOS, and the marginal utility per dollar was definitely maxed out during these few hours. I'm not trying to start anything, but it's been a long time since I've felt it was appropriate to call quite a few people "fanboys."
Then I'm curious, why review "other" games you're not crazy about? Yes I'm talking about Dungeon Defenders, one of the worst games on iOs. Here are some of your quotes: "You'll encounter a fair amount of latency and matchmaking oddness as you get into and attempt to find matches. And the lack of voice chat is annoying on a fundamental strategy level." "If the game controlled well, this would easily be a highly recommended game. Alas, the controls and interface are terrible. It's painfully obvious that this is a game designed foremost and balanced for a dual-analog controller. Instead of integrating good touch-based controls, Trendy Entertainment has chose to just put all of a controller's functionality up on the screen. It's littered with buttons, bubbles, and dials to the extent that they obscure play." "But Dungeon Defenders is also fundamentally an awkward game to move around in, in part, due to the terrible 3D camera which needs to be babysat with an on-screen pad." You even RE-REVIEWED it for iPad2 stating and I quote: "Unfortunately, all of our original criticisms of the game's UI still stands" One of the worst games ever on iOs and by your quotes, I don't think you'll disagree, yet it earned a review on the front page twice. Everyone is going to take your side here since you're the head chief of the website, but I think I've more than proven my point.
Because it was extremely popular, extremely hyped, and was the biggest online game at the time. Not only that, it's a cross-platform game not only on the Android, but on the Motorola Xoom and others. People were dying to hear thoughts of the game. You might not know it, but TA is a very small and insulated part of the iOS community. Just because there a few members here that love ME, the same is definitely not felt by the greater majority iOS customers. And no, not everyone is going to take Hodapp's side because he's "head chief." You can call him out any day, and he'll reply like any other poster, although quite a bit more sarcastic than most. He's not going to ban you or something just because you don't agree with him. Since I've been following threads here on TA, there's no doubt that people have been antagonist towards Hodapp more times than to every other member combined. He does his job.
I've seen highly hyped games get reviewed and the forum thread for that game quickly dies out over the first week of release. ME has stayed well visible now since it was released and shows no signs of slowing down. I admit that it is not the most pretty thing to look at but it has that certain oomph that keeps you coming back to play it. Hopefully when the update hits it will fix most of the major bugs that are plaguing it.
Good response. I realized afterwards, this is kinda taking things off topic, which wasn't my goal here. Additionally, not trying to call out Hodapp, moreover trying to point out that reviews have been posted on the front page over games the TA moderators didn't feel "great" about, which I feel is a category ME falls into for them. Even I have plenty of gripes about the game, yet keep coming back for more. With so many people nagging for a front page review and a thread with over 80,000 views, I'd say the game has some popularity besides the fanboys. In the end, it's just my opinion, but the "greater majority iOS customers" will always prefer Angry Birds over anything else.
