good to know - I own the first game, just have no time to play the xbox anymore. I was told Dead Space was better than System Shock 2 - but from the little I've played of the first (around 2-3 hours) and the iphone game (which I beat), I think I still prefer System Shock 2.

I love the atmosphere in DS - the hallucinations in the iphone game were great (especially toward the end). The gameplay mechanics are solid, and I enjoyed playing it on the xbox. But System Shock 2 had a lived in feel to it's world that has not since been surpassed for me (Bioshock came close though). The levels in SS2 were full of content - and the RPG elements were many, well designed and integral to the gameplay. Dead Space felt more Doom3* with light RPG elements than System Shock 2.

*Just no where near as shitty and boring as Doom3. :p

    Placed my vote.

I've gone for Bug Heroes by a whisker. It's just full to bursting with charm and charisma. Dead Space and Mission Europa ran it very close though..

Hey, no Kami Retro? I love that game!

Mission Europa is much more akin to System Shock 2 than Dead Space.

I have and love both games but ME is the better one hands down.

Too bad that Touch Arcade for some strange reason (its forum thread has 2000+ replies and is one of the most active ones right now with overwhelmingly positive reviews) can't be bothered to review the game...

I am very much looking forward to getting ME - next time gift card I get is going towards it :D

I'll give TA the benefit of the doubt and maybe they are taking the proper amount of time to play the game before they review it.

Wow, I haven't played any of these yet! My favorite 2011 game so far is Mad Skillz MX. I love physics bike games, so I really liked it a lot. I really want to try Tiny Wings, and FFIII eventually.

Mission Europa for me. All the other games were good, and no less deserving of the title, but I just had more fun with ME, in an overall experience kind of way.

I picked Mission Europa barely over Dead Space. Mission Europa is so much more loaded with content. It took me 4 hours to beat Dead Space. I've played 17 hours on M.E. and I'm only on Level 21.

Everyone seems to enjoy Mission Europa. I don't know why, but it seems really uninteresting to me. I've seen a few videos and I'm not really liking the graphics or gameplay.

Can someone please explain what is so special about this game?

You just have to play it to get it. That's why it isn't getting very much attention, people don't think the screenshots and videos justify the price.

I think of it like Game Dev Story, a patchwork of individually bland elements that go together and make a very entertaining product.

I watched videos of ME and thought it looked lame. Then I got Necromancer Rising when it went free and thought it was pretty good. All the rage and hype around here got me to download ME and it is freaking amazing. If the fact that its beating all the other awesome games on this list doesn't convince you to buy it then I dunno what will. The developer might create a lite version in a month or so. Perhaps that will change your mind.

Well I finally grew a pair and put down 10$ for ME.... should I go ahead and delete necromancer before I even played it?.... Its gonna be a bit before I play though... Don't want to get addicted (like u guys say I will) and contribute to my 200+ backlog...

...if you think Mission Europa is creaming the competition now; just wait till the multiplayer areana gets going with the next update.

I still haven't played Dead Space (it's EA, is it not customary to wait for the next $0.99 sale?).

Are you saying you don't want to play Mission Europa because you're worried it'll be so awesome that you won't get to toy with mediocre games because you'll be having too much fun? I don't get it...

By the way... delete Necro, you can always go back to it later. That's what I did.

Dead Space is easily the best game to ever grace iOs in terms of quality on
every level. It's simply an amazing feat and an example to all iOs developers
on how good this platform can be. I couldn't put it down until I passed it twice.

    But...

It came from an incredibly well established company in the gaming industry
and probably had a large team of very talented people crafting this beauty.

That said, it was easy for me to vote Mission Europa for game of the year.
One person is responsible for this masterpiece, even crafting a 3D engine from
scratch. While I own all the best on iOs, except the $16 FFIII, I have to say
ME is one of the only games that has kept me coming back day after day for
    more.

All of the games on the list are great, but ME saw an unpresidented level of
development and commitment from only 1 person. (Simply my opinion).

    Dead Space for now...

Actually I didn't know Bug Heroes was released in 2011... feels like a long time ago. If Bug Heroes can offer improved variety of maps along with a story campaign it would be the perfect game. I really liked the characters in Bug Heroes, it seems like there's lost opportunity for getting the players immersed in some story / plot.

Kind of. Not all my games are mediocre. But yes, I'm scared of it being too awesome. I have 200+ unplayed games and barely any room on my iPod. I'm not goin to stop downloading. That + an awesome game that makes me stop playing others and deleting them= not enough room on my iPod.

Yep, it's an interesting sentiment. When you buy $15 of games a week minimum for the iOS, you tend to want to eliminate the junk first. I don't have a single free game, but I still have 150+ unplayed games synced (unplayed=5 minutes trial time only). Because of this, I haven't played more than 15 minutes of GTA: CW, Aralon, FF3, etc. However, there's always games that are so good you can't help but play through without a break as soon as getting it (Dead Space, StarFront, etc). Lol I also play most Gameloft games as soon as I buy them when they come out to get rid of the huge file, unless it has an excellent multiplayer node There's not much you can do when you want to keep up with the quickly growing hordes of amazing game that are incredibly cheap.

I know I'll always have an amazing game to play on a rainy day. That's another part of it.
